Expansion for what? The number of missionaries are way down, primarily from the drop in the US. Is this just wishful thinking?
The expansion is to house the growing number of couple missionaries (adult couples), if I was informed correctly.
The First Presidency has been planning to expand the MTC for several years now. Couple missionaries will be serving in massive numbers and much more space is drastically needed. Fortunately the First Presidency is guided by inspiration in all they do. MTC expansion is just one area where the Lord's kingdom continues to blossom and cover the earth.
Why are the anti-Mormons so venomous in Utah? I respect people who don’t accept my faith, but at least in Colorado you can have an intelligent discussion on the subject. In Utah it appears that half truths, distortions of well recorded history, defamation of all things sacred and blatant lying are well accepted as long as it is harshly anti-Christ, his apostles or his Church. Seriously, haven’t you antis embarrassed your parents enough?
Gosh, thanks for clearing that up "Please." I can sleep much better tonight knowing you're on the job. Keep up the good work of keeping on eye on the media.
What a waste of money.
Numbers down? Here is the last 5 year number of LDS missionaries set apart, since 2008 and back.
Keep in mind, there are 14 or so foreign MTCs, and there are more LDS people abroad than in the US...Canada goes to Provo, too.
2008: 30,312
2007: 30,384
2006: 30,653
2005: 30,587
2004: 29,548
It seems consistently high to me.
'09 will probably be higher than any of the above, and this year higher still.
There were higher numbers from 1996-2002, but '02 was when the Church policy on standards was revamped.
2003, the numbers dropped by 6,000 (to 30 thousand, approximately). But you see the numbers since then.
And yes, more couples are going on missions. My parents were housed in a hotel in Provo rather than lodged at the MTC.
The LDS Church will continue to grow. Glad to know they are good neighbors there.
I worked at the MTC a few years ago (2004) and yes space needed for the couples is definatly needed. I was also invovled with some additions while there and yes much thought and prayer goes into spending monies for remodleling and building. Its not wasted! I could name a number of buildings that have gone up in Provo and Orem that were definatly a waste. They seemed to have been built just for the sake of building. This would NOT be the case at the MTC.
