The article is a little sketchy as to the timetables, but it looks to me like people are going to be able to remove their names AFTER it is too late to get any more signatures. If that's the case, it's outrageous! What would preclude large numbers of people who oppose a petition from signing it with the intent of removing their names after it is too late to replace them?
Just sounds like a bad idea all around to me.
If the legislators deem that the restrictions be placed on initiatives then it should hold true for all elections and the number of votes they get at the polls. An election should require the same number of voters voting before an election can be legal. A 25% voter turnout by districts and counties would be as reasonable as the damands they place on petitions.
Just as you vote, there should be no withdrawal of signatures. You can't vote then say you changed your mind and you want to change your vote, so why should it be any different with an initiative? People don't read up on candidates so why allow vote changes. If we could change our votes, I think Obama as well as many Utah legislators would be excommunicated from government.
This is purely an attempt to defeat responsible and open government in Utah. It's pure spite that this law is even in the legislative body to thwart ethical and moral government representation.
Remember these are these same people complaining about the federal government taking away the rights of the state (not you and I, but the legislators who know all). The republicans are frightened of this fair boundaries petition, because it will not allow them to gerrymander districts to maintain their absolute control of Utah politics.
Sounds like a bad idea? our Legislators have no bad ideas. Only the Peasants have bad ideas when they dare to question the big boys and girls on "the Hill".
These legislators are scared to death that We The People might try to have some say in our own governance. What a bunch of pathetic paranoid clowns.
Our legislators want to do everything they can to stifle citizen participation. This doesn't surprise me.
Go to www.fairboundaries.org and sign the petitions. Send an overwhelming notice that corruption and conflicts of interest have become a norm that's no longer acceptable.
