Congratulations to all the talented, blessed, young people. May all go well with there goals and aspirations, and remember to enjoy the journey!

Sterling scolars,pff

My uncle dropped out of high school with grade 8 education and got into oil pipeline as a welder. Now he is a multi-millionaire and owns his own pipeline company. He said school stifled his education.
true story.

Peter Jennings

top news anchorman dropped out of high school, too.

The glory of God

is intelligence, not education...

Under Acheivers

Don't get discouraged that you didn't make the elite status of sterling scholar. My ACT score was single digit and managed to land a six-figured killer job!

A simple man

How pathetic you "underachievers" are. Young people who work hard deserve a small degree of recognition. Are you so little that, even as an adult, you cannot let that stand without belittling the acheievement? You owe a public apology to these young people.

And, do you really think that some lame ancedote about welder, a substandard ACT score or the like is really to the point? For every one like you, there are a hundred trapped by their poor education.

These young people are the hope of America. You naysayers are its curse.

to a simple man

I totally agree with you

Congradulations to all of you! What wonderful young people you are. You have learned what really is important in life, that of setting goals and working towards achieving them. I know the hours of work and effort it has taken for you to get this far as my granddaughter is one of you. I also know the sacrifices she made to get to this point in her life. You young people are the hope of America. You are a strong rising generation and have the intellenge to continue to make this a great country with your talents. The future lies before each one of you and great things can happen as you continue to contribute to society. As a resident of this great State of Utah "thank you for becoming the great people you are". To each one of you "How proud we are of your acheievemnts".

Good job

It is an acheivement that these young people have accomplished, but I think people miss the point that if you do not have the talent to excel in education doesn't mean that you are anything less than a sterling scholar. Both acheivements mentioned above are worth mentioning.

Bill Gates

shaped the world too, a college dropout. what the point of the comments given is that it's great that people can acheive in all aspects of life.

Re: Peter Jennings

As your point is? That kids should drop out of skool? Do you have any idea what the average annual earnings is for a high school drop out vs. HS grad vs a college grad? Drop out if you want--if you really want to run that risk.

Education is about learning how to learn.

Some achieve that in school, some achieve that in real life.

Neither can be diminished by whiners...

Margo

Weird comments for young people who have excelled rather than slacked off..... Sounds like a lot of jealousy going on here.

Cool

Haha, sterling scholar is good and yes others succeed just fine without sterling scholar, but why not get free money for college? The more opportunities, the better. :)

ProudMom

Good Luck! to all of you! and Thank you to The Deseret News for having this wonderful program to honor those who have excelled in their areas of interest. My son is one of them and I couldn't be prouder! These are all outstanding young men and women! Whether you are chosen to move on to the finals or not today, what a privilege it is to represent your school as a Sterling Scholar! Congratulations!

Sterling Scholar Mom

I am sure the oil tycoon, Peter Jennings, and Bill Gates would tell you that their success in life came when they learned how to apply themselves to hard work and dedicated ambition, qualities all of these students have gained at an early age. Their talents will benefit them and their communities. Congratulations to all of them. Good luck tonight! We are very proud of you!

Utah Dem

And to add to Sterling Scholar Mom's comments - Jennings, Gates, and the oil tycoon and anyone else in that situation is NOT THE NORM they are anomallies. On occasion there are individuals that are quite successful with limited formal education but ask any of them if it really is all about the money they have earned and they will tell you no.

A Sterling Scholar from AmerFork

I got a 36 on my ACT. But I also know that that will not suffice by itself. It is the spirit of working hard, of innovation that create people like Bill Gates. The true heroes don't just get by on natural talent. They have the humility and the work ethic and the innovative mind that really helps the world, and rakes in the money.

In ten years, a 36 ACT score will mean very little. Only how hard I work, and how much ambition I have will matter. Because hard workers with ambition are almost guaranteed to succeed, no matter their education or test scores.

But it is nice to get recognition every now and then. To me, personally, it helps me fight the temptation to be lazy--I have to live up to this. It has also made me slightly neurotic--but that is also the type of person I am anyway.

To the "underachievers" (in quotes for a reason):
yes, it is possible to succeed without an amazing education. But it sure does help.

To the Sterling Scholars: Don't let yourself stagnate. Take your knowledge and run with it. Or it will be worthless.

Couldn't Be More Proud

Congrats to all of these students! Wow all of the hard work is paying off. This is a great opportunity for these students to compete in the areas they love. I can't imagine that there would be this much fuss if we were talking about football state championships or the scholarships involved with that!!!

Wow, here we are recognizing amazing students and yet some of you can only belittle their achievement. Sounds like you weren't chosen. Good job to all of the Sterling Scholars!
