I was there at Cypress and agree with everything in your article. It was exciting seeing the competition, but so much of the experience was an ordeal, from trying to book the mandatory bus ride ($25 for a trip that usually costs $3.75), to the long waits and unavailability of food or drink (and you weren't allowed to bring your own). The officials blame everything on the weather, but this was a matter of poor planning and the attitude that the public can be jammed together and mistreated like cattle.

Question

Will Canadians continue to politely insist that they're so much better than us yahoo Americans, when they can't pull off an event that was done beautifully in SLC 8 years ago?

Weather washed away their spectator area? Please. Weather has been happening since long before Vancouver existed. How could they not plan better than this?

After all the tarring and feathering of the SLC 2002 bidding process, I think it's time to start looking for dirt on Vancouver 2010. It's becoming obvious that they didn't win the Games on merit.

4 words...

Salt Lake City Better.

kge

No snow = tough to make winter olympics without it. Beautiful city, poor site selection for winter sports tho.

OH Canada!

That what you get in a socialist country... amongst other things, poor weather! LOL!

really?

Wow! Great comments, everyone. That's the Olympic spirit...

Elevation too low

The elevation for this mountain is too low. Very simple and it boggles the mind how the organizers didn't see this coming.Salt Lake City had plenty of snow for every event simply because of the elevation of the events. Maybe its Al Gore's global warming to blame??

It's George Bush's fault

Just ask all the socialists - it's Bush's fault!! Bush didn't pay enough attention to Al Gore and global warming and now we see the terrible effects. That darn Bush!! Obama should apologize to the world for America's arrogance against global warming.

Been there

I've wondered how Vancouver ever got the Olympics. The weather there is just too mild. I love the City - lived there for years and loved every minute of it.

Rio is also a beautiful city - they should also get a chance at the winter olympics. A beautiful city doesn't a venue make.

Olympian

The games in Vancouver are still far superior to the Salt Lake games. Salt Lake did their best, but it's unfortunate that the only thing the world remembers is the corruption scandal that won them the right to host the games, and then the cheating by the officials that marred the pairs skating final. Oh ya, and the green jello pins, they were fun.

A.G.

This just proves that Al Gore is right about global warming. I'm guessing that there will be nowhere on the planet to hold the winter games in about 50 years.

Realist

Canada is a socialist country?? WOW! These Utahns are really showing their ignorance on a number of levels.

Proud Canadian

This is not the Olympic spirit. I also strongly disagree that Canadians, politely or otherwise declare themselves superior to anyone. Canadians are proud to be Canadians and don't need compare themselves to anyone in the world to feel that pride. We have an identity separate and completely unrelated to the US. The gross generalizations and need for labels amazes me here and is entirely irrelevant. While Canada is not a socialist country, I have to wonder what the point you were trying to make would be. What does socialism have to do with the weather!? Americans don't have uncooperative weather? There isn't a need for comparison. The SLC Olympics were amazing as are the Vancouver Olympics. Why the need to slam another country, city, venue because it is different than your own? Honestly, SLC did an incredible job as has Vancouver. There are successes and failures where ever Olympics are held. Slamming another country/city does not make your event more successful or memorable to the world. It only shows that you didn't get the Olympic message!

re: Olympian

Salt Lake is known to have one of the best Olympics ever. The events ran well and the venues were exceptional. I am not sure how you can say the Vancouver games are "far superior". I do not believe that all the world remembers is scandal.

New York Skier

I attended the Salt Lake Olympics and really enjoyed them even though I was somewhat surprised and unnerved by the socialism of the state. Many of the comments here make me think of the pot calling out the kettle.

Unfortunate

1) They should have considered that the snow would be awful. It nearly was in SLC but then we got some great snow just before the Games.

2) Maritime climes should not host winter events.

3) Great statement from the article: "We're sorry there are no refunds for weather-related reasons," Smith Valade said on Saturday.

But wait, they're offering refunds because the weather eroded the chance to have people stand on a hillside.

4) SL's games were great and very well run.

5) Ice Skating judges are fickle and caused the pain, not SLOC.

6) Elevation is everything. SL had little or no snow in the valleys during the games...we had no trouble walking to the ECenter for hockey or the Peaks arena for hockey but there was plenty to trudge through at Soldier Hollow for the Cross-Country events. VANOC would have done VERY well to consider that, not just that skiing had been going into April last year. SLC's ski areas, in extreme years, have skiing into May and rarely into June...VANOC should have known that April is no guarantee of Feb conditions...in a down year.

Plan for the WORST!

Proud Human Being

Way to say it like it is "Proud Canadian," I give you 2 thumbs up. I'm a Proud American and, first and foremost, I hope to be considered a "Proud Human Being." I'll stand shoulder to shoulder with the Proud Canadian and anyone else who thinks we should focus on our similarities not our differences. Good grief, crap happens everywhere. Why not be supportive of each other instead of trying to tear each other down. We're neighbors and allies. Let's act like it.

Salt Lake City should have hosted it again, we are ready and we have real snow. Boo Canada.

KD

In four years all of this will be forgotten. I can say that SLOC scandal put a stop to something that had been going on with the IOC for years. If you wanted the games, you had to play the game. That's just how business was done. True, it was wrong, but that's just how things were done. So hopefully the Salt Lake games put an end to that and we can all be glad that it was brought to light. I found it interesting that when the scandal broke, a lot of the countries began destroying their records. LOL

Utahn

I’m a Utahn, and I think the Vancouver games are awesome. Keep up the great work. Your city and surrounding area is beautiful! The article is lame. Keep in mind that negative people love to post anonymously.
