Interesting how global warming has become an issue with the development of computers. Now, these wing ding, whizz bang superior people throw around theories and demand political compliance because of computer models based on phony temperature gathering, a single tree ring in Siberia, and the picture of polar bear floating on a melting iceberg. These academics, I and many others suspect are themselves riding the melting iceberg of public funding . Their lives have been in public institutions where tax dollars from their point of view come easy. Global warmists with their recently tarnished image should be hesitant to challenge the integrity of a politician who is looking out for the public's interest.

De Nile

ain't just a river in Egypt. Global warming does exist- what happened to all the ice from the last ice age?
No humans are not solely responsible for global warming.
Yes humans have an impact on global warming.
These are indisputable facts of reality.
Anyone wanting to argue against these facts is blinded their emotions and not using logic.

The debate is about how much impact Humans are having.

I find it odd though, that politicians in Utah- mostly accountants and real estate people, are claiming they are right in their views and scientists who spend all their time and training are wrong. Logically it is obvious who has the better arguement. But then this is Utah where emotion rules are politics and not logic. So I guess I should grab my pitchfork and torch and fight against the scientists too.

I don't know if global warming exists or not. I do know that it's disingenuous for either side of the debate to accuse the other side of turning the debate into a political discussion. Both sides are extremely guilty of that. I have a natural distrust of anyone who stands to profit from a position. Money tends to warp all perspective.

The NIT

Of course the earth is always changing and evolving. I don't think anyone is disputing that fact. What is terribly unsure at this point in time is whether or not MAN CAUSED global warming or climate change is happening. I tend to think man's effect is very, very slight. And now with all the "doctored" so-called scientific data ever report should be viewed with great skepticism. The current proposed cap and tax is stupid and will be a U. S. job killer. And, the economy is important - even if these so-called open minded academicians think so or not. In my opinion, man-caused global warming is the greatest hoax in the history of the world. Thanks, Al.

When "global warming" became an impossible myth to sell, the threat was renamed "climate change." This is much easier to sell, because climate is cyclical, and really does change.

We have made numerous pilgrimages to the Athabaska Glacier in Jasper National Park in the Canadian Rockies. Signs along the road identify the edge of the glacier as it receded since the early 1900's. It was receding an awfully long time before carbon dioxide became the man-made cause of our climate troubles.

The truth is that the "acts of God" will deliver surprising climate changes over time, and puny man will have no effect upon these changes. Attempts to halt the divine scheme are reminiscent of the ancients who decided to build a tower by which they could reach heaven. Little minds think they are wise. Wise men stand humbly in awe of nature's power and force. We would do well to adjust our living to these forces.

Digbads

Too many people suffer from the delusion that most scientific research is NOT pure garbage. It is done to generate revenue. If you fit the "company line" of whomever is paying you (these days, Fed money is all about "climate change") then you get more research money.

Follow the money. FIgure out who is doling out the grants, what are they paying for, and you can trace their agenda.

And-- I'm a former researcher and a former scientist. A very jaded scientist.

Pride in ignorance is sorry

This really shows a total lack of knowledge about science. Is there a education system in Utah?

"When "global warming" became an impossible myth to sell, the threat was renamed "climate change."

Most of us notice when we watch the weather temperature is only part of the report. What is heat children? Heat is based on Brownian motion or the movement of molecules. As molecules move faster materials expand.

In our atmosphere, energy is expressed as wind and the vertical movement of air too. Children, this is why there is high and low air pressure. Maybe you might remember that energy can't be created or destroyed.

Children, this is why air can have different energy levels if they have differing amounts of water. Kids, this is why dry air doesn't feel as warm. There is a process intellectual elitist call latent heat exchange.

Children energy can make water vapor instead of increasing temperature. This is why educated people whether or not they believe in climate change use the term. Communication is enriched when language is concise.

Which is more concise church or the LDS Church?

"Signs along the road identify the edge of the glacier as it receded since the early 1900's. It was receding an awfully long time before carbon dioxide became the man-made cause of our climate troubles."

Human activity releasing more CO2 started over 200 hundred years ago, well before 1900's.

They don't teach about the Industrial Revolution in Utah schools? England used up most their trees burning wood. This meant England had to switch to using coal that had more BTU's. The burning of coal sped up the Industrial Revolution.

We have people who can't see blue sky for weeks telling us man doesn't effect climate. Read about urban heat sinks and the effect of increased air particulates from man made activity in Utah and its impact of the spring run off in the San Jaun Rockies.

The ignorance many of you show is sad. You can't control your race, size or hair color. You can control whether you are ignorant.

Huh?

Are these "Professors" watching the news or just pontificating? All it takes is a quick glance at the "all blue" weather map on the back of USA Today to know that whatever "warming" there is, it's not "global"! Seen the snow storms shutting down the eastern US?

By their own admission, the earth's temp peaked in the late 90's. Peak means it has cooled since then.

Taming of the Shrew? Al Gore and his money-grubbing "experts" are telling us it's getting warmer. Would they like to pay my heat bills this year?

Hmmm...

Did the experts read another headline from today? "Winter Storm Cancels 1,900 Flights".

What Global Warming?

Rocky Anderson

and the University of Utah's sponsorship are nothing more than the typical liberal socialist spending two days talking to themselves. Things are looking real bad, for them, when they only need one of the smallest auditoriums on campus. This group must have had a great two days confirming each others political and social views. What would have happened if anyone tried to take the other side of the argument? These people are the most closed minded types you can find. A Climate of Change, Working for Peace, Social Justice and a Healthy Plant. Sounds like they covered it all. No conservative would want to promote those nasty concepts. PS How many of these wing nuts support Obama's plan to put up real hard dollars for a new Nuclear Plant? Watch out Mr. President, don't mess with your base.

Thomas

Funny how they mention Tyler Volk as if he agrees with the professors. Tyler is not a "denier of Climate Change" per se but he does subscribe to a different way of looking at the problem. It is called "Gaea Theory" which basically says that the earth, including its people, are part of one system that can morph over time and adapt to continual change. People can help with that adaptation but so will "Mother Nature"

John C.

I believe strongly that we are stewards of this planet. It’s resources are ours to use, but to use responsibly. I believe we will be held responsible for the pollutions we cause, and that we should do all we can to clean up our act.
Having said that I agree with some of the other posters here. This debate isn’t about the planet… its about money. I remember back in the 70’s these same groups where telling us of the impending ice age, all while we had some of the most savvier droughts. Now the east coast has set new records this last week in snow accumulation and they are telling us of global warming. Makes me wonder…

Blasted

Ooooh, the article says the scientists blasted their critics. That is so hard to take. And, then it said it's a "boiling" issue. Wow, someone is really being scientific.

GWB

"Digbads", when you say "Follow the money. FIgure out who is doling out the grants, what are they paying for, and you can trace their agenda."

I whole heartedly agree.

When you look into the funding of the leading scientists that say humans do not have an impact on the climate, you find that almost everyone of them was funded by groups like the Heritage Foundation and the National Center for Policy Analysis who got their funding from Exxon-Mobil.

So, when the funding for scientists to couter climate change comes from Exxon, you can pretty well guess the result that Exxon is paying for.

Who will defend fossil fuels?

Where are the professors who will defend our use of oil, gas, and coal? We need to rally them to come out and defend, academically, how wonderful oil is for our nation!

I'm really worried about the defenseless fossil fuel industry, whose profits have fallen a bit during the recession, and they are suffering! I keep reading about how OPEC is so worried that oil could fall below $75 a barrel, and if a link is made between burning oil and global warming, their industry could get hurt! Do you want to lose jobs in the Middle East? We need our tax-payer funded military to escort oil tankers out of the Middle East to keep Somali pirates from raiding the oil ships! This provides jobs!

Why are we spending money on the so called "inversions" or Haiti or children (really, what have kids done for us globally, except make our shoes and wallets in China?!?), when we should be sending more money to the defenseless fossil fuel energy complex to save these 19th century technologies from getting hurt!

Down with domestic renewable energy! Burn, baby, burn! Save our Mideast oil!

Cali Marty

"Global Warming" Thee GReatest scam in history besides Social Security! It's obvious the climate changes throughout time.....And, esyes, we can do better by recycling.....

@ Linus

"The truth is that the "acts of God" will deliver surprising climate changes over time, and puny man will have no effect upon these changes."

Scientists call this silly assertion the "volcano argument" -- since one volcano eruption can emit more CO2 into the atmosphere at one time than many years of CO2 emitted by man via cars, coal-fired power plants, etc., man's contribution is relatively small compared to natural occurances.

This is true to some extent. But the issue here is not necessary magnitude, but man's increasing contribution is raising the floor of CO2 to affect change. Even that small amount can tip the balance in a system.

Think of it as adding water from one bucket into another bucket. If there's already some water in the first bucket, you won't be able to put all the water from the second into it without making a mess. That's the way to think about man's contribution to CO2 emissions from toxic oil, coal, and natural gas.

Alarmist

Global warming, so what? What do the alarmist think politicians and any laws can do about it? I do believe the earth is changing but as a normal life cycle of earth. For various reasons the earth has undergone many cycles of hot and cold yet it can't be controlled, predicted, proven, or resolved. It just happens.

One element of the warming that the alarmist have not disclosed or mentioned or maybe even studied is the relation of population, deforestation, and balance of nature in their studies. These so called studies are narrow minded and have no goals or valid reasons for their bell ringing or soap box screaming. They have this fixation on CO and many other gases and the only way they can explain it is narrow minded fear.

They remind me of the man standing on the corner wearing an aluminum cap to keep government from eaves dropping on his mind.

The only cure, as the alarmist see it, is population control and elimination of humans. The earth will do what it does, keep changing for better or worse. They or the government can't change the inevitable by legislation.
