Digbads

I don't understand the connection between the tantalizing title of this article, and the descriptions herein.

I read: Everyone likes the proposed budget and things are really quiet and mellow. Where is the "right, far right" at?

Tabloid journalism tactics

Talk about "gotcha" headlines...they remind me of football game streakers - you may have gotten my attention, but you've totally lost my respect.

I, too, was expecting a juicy dollop of neo-nazi legislation but nope...sounds just like common-sense governing for the most part.

Rights vs courts

This is one of the big problems of government when they put more fear in the defense of a bill than the if the bill is right or wrong. It is not the legislators job to worry about legal fees, that's the lawyers mindset, than if the bill is what is needed. The only thing legislators have to consider in making laws or bills is if it is compatiable with the constitutuion.

This is why lawyers should not be allowed to run for public office, it losses the separation of government when the legality of a bill is discussed rather than the intent of the bill. We have a supreme court that will decide the legal issues.

What's up?

For Digbads & Tabloid..., it may seem "normal for some in Utah but it "FAR,FAR RIGHT" for most.

Now we see that Conservative views are "Socialist" in action..wanting to take control and overthrow the Federal government and pass bills at a whim to satisy their own lusts for power and greed.
They fear the courts for retribution of failed policies.

Common-sense governing? Utahns are losing jobs right and left and they're wasting more time sending "messages" about global warming?

Apologies to the editors, but this article was rather a waste of space. Tomorrow maybe you can write an article about how the sun came up.

Not so sure

RE: Tabloid journalism tactics

I think very few people at this point would use the term "common sense governing" and "Utah legislature" in a single sentence.

Orwell would be proud.

I like the idea of a government run with selective differential ideologies applied to the line item issues. Neither conservative nor liberal strategies are one-size-fits-all political economic solutions. Both views are essential to conduct complex governments. Man does not exist solely to serve conservative or liberalm ideologies; rather each function to serve man.

Neither ideologue has been saintly and fixed, resolute political spectrum archrivals do not bring institutions of increased political capasity. Bilateral strategies applied specifically to line item issues do. Monopolistic ideologues bring political decay; regardless if they are liberal or conservative.

I'm o.k. with everything they are doing EXCEPT what they are trying to do to the state retirement fund.

If they tinker with 180,000 citizen's retirement, that will be the straw that breaks the camel's (or republican's) back in Utah. It will be the turning of the tide.

I hope they think before they act on that one.

Too Far Right

Digbads, not "everybody" likes the budget or these far-right message bills. The majority of Utahns are moderate, not far right, and they wish their representatives would come back toward the center.

Exterminating wolves. Calling science a hoax. I am sick to my stomach. This is what the people elected them to office for. I think not. Will someone please stand up to the anti-government fanatics before it is to late and they ruin our state.

Craig

Bernick is doing it again, making up stories and trying to change public opinion. The only sign that the legislature is moving to the right would be reducing the size of the budget. I have not heard of any budget cuts or proposals to decrease the government. Bernick gets right and left mixed up. Passing laws restricting behavior is not a thing of the right. Moving right means less government control. Over the years I have seem the legislature labeled with being conservative when they are not. If they were really conservative we would not have one of the highest tax rates and so much government regulation.

Ted

Can't agree more with the previous two posts. Bernick wrote a decent piece and probaly blanched when he read the headline. Don't know if the editor's personal politics are showing or if the paper's under an edict to hook readers in any way possible.

What???

Carl Wimmer, "It's because conservatives have the answers to America's problems." Funny, after the last 8 years of Bush, I'm pretty sure that the conservatives caused our problems. Nice try at passing the buck, though. Anyone who can't think for his/herself will believe everything they hear.

Nothing you said makes sense.
Do you even know what "Socialist" means?

State nullification where states stand up to an unconstitutional Federal Government is not a "socialist" action. It may be the only tool we have to scale back an out-of-control federal government.

Granted, at the federal level, rebublicans are more like Wilson Democrats than conservatives.
"Progressivism" has been prevalent in both parties for some time and it is destroying our nation.
But this article has nothing to do with that.

Instereo

Conservativism is the same kind of hoax as global warming. Just because you believe it's a hoax doesn't mean it will go away.

Utah's been behind the ironic curtain for a long time. Nothing is different this year.

Far right? It seems that Utah has always been adverse to Federal government looking at the historic origins of the state of Utah, this is no surprise. Whether this year's state Legislature is leaning far right is another questionable label, more likely designed for dramatic, emotional impact to draw readership. So far it seems to me that the state legislature is being its typical self - status quo. Even gun control, gay and lesbian rights legislation seem to have been watered down without the stringent far right, extremist getting their way. Gov. Herbert, except for one major conflict of interest controversy, seems to have been acceptably conservatively moderate as a balance to the State legislature so far. Let's see how the rest of the session goes when the real policy laws and appropriations that have real teeth get passed before a final label is bestowed on the state legislature.

Does the author of this article understand what "far right" is typically thought to mean? I don't think so.
