All empirical evidence suggests that we have few, if any wolves in Utah. Why are senate republicans doing this? It's disingenuous to assert that the reason is to save the elk population, since they only want a sufficient elk population to appease hunters.

Why would having wolves in Utah be a bad thing? I don't get it.

Another straight party vote. The Little Red Riding HOODS are afraid of the big bad wolves --

First off they passed a management plan. They didn't declare open season on wolves. Secondly the government didn't spend millions in the 1800's and early 1900's to eradicate wolves just for fun. I don't believe wolves should be killed for fun but I know they can't be let lose to kill livestock, pets, or even wildlife. When a persons livelyhood is directly affected by predators be it wolves, mountin lions, or coyotes something must be done. One attack on a herd of cows or sheep can cost the government 10's or thousands of dollars. For instance recently in Idaho a pack of wolves killed seven cows, and yes wolves kill for fun as much as they do for food. Out of the seven cows none were eaten. The total cost of this mess was over $20k, the wages of 2 wildlife biolgist for a day the rental of an airplane and chopper, and to reimburse the rancher .85/lb for his cows x7 a mature cow can weigh 1200 lbs. Bottom line is .85/lb doesn't reimburse this ranchers loses it simply puts a band-aide on his them.

For those that are not obviously involved with wolves, you are the ones that are duped into believing they are pretty, and neat to have around for the sake of things being natural, etc. In reality,(I live in wolf country, area 10 in Idaho County)your so called friendly wolf, preys on your pet dogs, cats, sheep, cows, deer and mainly elk. We have had wolves surround some children at a bus stop 2 weeks ago. (Fish and Game verified it). Wolves do not read signs that would say you can only have so many pups, they produce quite profusley and don't really care what we as humans think. I would guarantee that if you had one roaming in your back yard, you would want it gone.

Unfortunately our population and economic success has increased too much for anybody to have total control over their environment and their life. The fact that you live in a rural area doesn't give you exclusive right to determine what happens there. I live in a city and my livelihood is threatened by budget cuts and outsourcing. People who aren't from here (tourists and military) impact my life in a gazillion ways and they have just as much of a right to use (and waste) the resources as I do. I don't like a lot of it but it's unavoidable. We all have to make a lot of compromises and deal with the consequences of other people's needs and wants.
People living in wolf country are no exception to this rule. If we had a smaller population with less access to information, less leisure time, and less money, you could probably hang on to that frontier mentality. But as it is only a time machine can give you that freedom back (well maybe total societal breakdown would, for a while anyway).

For a brief moment of joy I thought the wolves they were talking about were all the politicians stuffing their faces on special interest bribes.

Alas I was wrong. They were just getting back to the business of killing things for sport.

" I would guarantee that if you had one roaming in your back yard, you would want it gone" and you sir would be wrong we have a pack of wolves on our property and i can think of nothing that would make me want them dead they have every bit if not more so to be here than i do hell but you know what i will concede one thing to you david they don't care what we think and well i'm ok with that

Does this senator have some profit in mind for this stupid piece of legislation. There are more important issues that need taking care off.

Isn't it amazing, with all the mindless, self-serving, ignorance being used to make the return and acceptance of wolves very difficult no one ever discusses the fact there are a couple thousand wolves in Minnesota, and have been forever. They are easily managed, have not caused massive injury to the farm and ranching communities and are tolerated well by the locals. I guess Utah Republicans can see only what they want to see, and hear only what they want to hear. Oh well, I imagine most of their knowledge of nature and ecology was learned from Walt Disney and Fairy Tales.
