Kudos to the DNEWS, Dr. Gray, and the reporter for sharing this story with us. Our community is a better place because of the contributions of this department. Thank you to all involved.
I knew Dr. Egan personally and he blessed my life.
so what is the difference between a psychologist and a psychiatrist... Who do I go to for what?
Go to the psychiatrist for a ten minute visit and bottles of legal dope. You pay for an hour and the Dr. and drug companies make out like bandits. The psychologist on the other hand will give the psych hour - 40 minutes if you are lucky - do nothing and will give you a reason to be depressed - a mega bill. Eventually, he will send you to his buddy the psychiatrist - where you can get really cured. You see the psychologist can't give dope but the other dude can. But they can both give you the shaft.
If you want help talk to a good friend and many ministers - clergy people - can help you more.
Thank you, Mr. Scientologist. Always pushing your agenda to erradicate psychology and psychiatry on the general public regardless of the absurdity behind it.
Oldman you shouldn't give any advice since you don't know what you are talking about. Neither does Tom Cruise!
To oldman -
I am a grandchild of Dr. Egan and a beneficiary of his work. I don't recall getting any 'legal dope' and certainly don't recall getting 'the shaft.'
I'm also concerned with the oldman-type rants . . like Glen Beck, they take important issues and polarize them with their extremism. I want to point out, however, that scientists and researchers are also currently still debating the merits of psychiatric treatment. I just finished a PhD studying the benefits and risks of psychiatric treatment and anyone who claims science has "shown" its effects are safe and effective long-term (especially for children) simply hasn't been listening to all the research (and lack therof). America is currently medicating 3 times as many children as other industrialized country . . is that a good thing? Maybe, maybe not. Really smart people disagree about the question. Should we screen kids so we can get them on meds earlier? Maybe, maybe not. Academics disagree about the question. Bottom line: we still have much to learn and deliberate. Let's explore the issues in a thoughtful way together, and not let the fanatics dictate the discourse.
No, scientists aren't debating the merits of psychiatric treatments. They are debating the effectiveness. There is no question the treatments are effective, it's a question of how effective are they. Do they help mostly people who are severely depressed (which even the skeptics will agree based on the data), or do they help those with lesser depression as well? No one will dispute we need more effective treatments in the future.
