Just another addiction that Utah has. TAXES!
The simple answer is that a national sales tax should be used, instead of every state and city having very different and constantly changing tax rates. Small businesses don't have any way to track all this.
For a Republican controlled state, they go after taxes like a pack of Liberal Democrats.
If economic presense is enough to justify taxes vs. physical presense then would utah still be able to tax a pension I recieved from working in another state? They seem to fell all my income regradless of source is fair game for them. This is one heavily taxed state and I am to understand most residents don't pay much tax -it is left to the minority working people who earn a decent wage and don't have 10 kids.
We could use the same arguments made in this story to do away with sales tax...if Amazon doesn't collect sales tax on books, then neither should bookstores with a physical presence.
The big issue here is that American's are way overtaxed and we like the fact that the internet is still new enough that government hasn't figured out how to tax it so much (thank goodness for government inefficiency).
Never, ever again another new tax! Especially on purchases made on the internet. Just the blood sucking government looking for more money.
Ironic that a Utahn from a Republican administration is supporting more taxes. That's the GOP way, despite their claims to the contrary.
What a joke that the chairman of Utah State Tax Commission told Congress that allowing states to tax only those businesses that have a physical presence within their boundaries. While Nancy Pelosi has squandered over $101,000 tax dollars on in-flight services on congressional delegations since 2008, according to new documents obtained under the Freedom of Information Act by the government watchdog group Judicial Watch. Expenditures on Pelosi-led CODELs, the group's report shows, include thousands for liquor, beer and wine. Receipts show purchase of Johnny Walker, Grey Goose, Beefeater, Maker's Mark, Courvoisier, Dewars, Bombay Sapphire and more, all courtesy of the American tax payer. During the same two-year period, the entirety of Speaker Pelosi's travel expenditures, including the use of Air Force aircraft for herself and relatives, cost the Department of Defense $2,100,749.59. Judicial Watch's report Wednesday captured the attention of the social conservative American Family Association, who called Pelosi's expenses an abuse of taxpayer dollars in an urgent action alert to supporters. Just who do YOU think pays for all of this Utah, hmmmmm?. Did the chairman of Utah State Tax Commission talk about this?. Why not?.
It seems to me that the only reason sales tax is moral to begin with is because it helps pay for public services to that company with a physical presence -- roads, water systems, sewer systems, etc. The phone lines over which the Internet is generally transmitted are private not public. So what exactly is the state providing Amazon that needs to be reimbursed through taxation?
Shows why Utah is so stupid when a Utahn tells Congress about nothing, while wasteing his 3 minutes of fame, in the news also, While Nancy Pelosi has squandered over $101,000 tax dollars on in-flight services on congressional delegations since 2008, according to new documents obtained under the Freedom of Information Act by the government watchdog group Judicial Watch. Utah State Tax Commission ?.
Unprecedented Decline for United States
U.S. Drops from Free to Mostly Free: For the first time in the history of the Index for Economic Freedom, the United States is no longer in the top category of economically free countries and is even second in the North American region (behind Canada). This year’s score of 78, though high by global standards, is 2.7 points lower than last year and bumps the U.S. to a second-tier country of freedom.
What Is Economic Freedom?
Economic freedom refers to the ability of individuals to control their own labor and property. In an economically free society, individuals are free to work, produce, consume, and invest in any way they please, with that freedom both protected by the state and unconstrained by the state. Governments allow labor, capital, and goods to move freely and refrain from coercion or constraint of liberty beyond the extent necessary to protect and maintain liberty itself.
Why the Index of Economic Freedom Is Important: Studies in the Index of Economic Freedom demonstrate important relationships between economic freedom and job creation, per capita income, economic growth rates, human development, democracy.
The only parties justified in taxing internet transactions are those footing power, internet and shipping infrastucture: the life-blood of e-commerce.
Since federal, state and municipal governments do maintain the roads and airways on which shipping depends it would make sense for them to collect some sort of shipping tax. But I suspect they do a degree of that already.
They want as much money as they can get and won't rest until 100% of our income is in their hands.
what a crock
we really need more govt controls
The correct tax law change would be to dump tax exemptions after two children.
People need to pay for their childrens education.
That alone would shore up the coffers for years to come.
Utah Tax Commission striving to tax us to death. We give corporations tax breaks to come to Utah but by heaven for those that shop on the Internet they want to tax us more -- where does it end
Utah is already trying to collect sales taxes by "requiring" voluntary disclosure of any purchases you did not pay sales tax on, including Internet purchases. It is right in the instructions for your state tax return. Good luck with that one!
Well, unfortunately this subject has really changed our mind about moving to St. George to retire. So Sorry for the fine residents of Utah.
