lame apology

Totally half-hearted apology by the "student leader." Felt forced by the administration and I'm sure he meant offense in every way by holding up the sign that said, "Which wife gave you mono?" It doesn't matter if Freddette laughed at it, it's just plain wrong!

Maybe they should ask which wife tsught him how to hit a shot as time winds down to beat the home team...hahahahz

Appropriate

It's nice to see a reasonable, rational and proportionate response from a student group and university administration, rather than a list of justifications or the ridiculous back-and-forth the Max Hall drama created.

I agree with the overall sentiment that people are allowed to say what they will, but that doesn't make it correct or tasteful.

Good for SDSU for "self-policing". If only the Utah schools could do more of the same.

Go Cougars!

Stand up Kinda Guy

Silva did what few of us seldom do, he stood up and took responsiblity. I wasn't offended and was surprised by the outpouring of comments made. As a Mormon I appreciate the appology and accept it. Lets move on. SDSU nor BYU needs any more of this.

We are told by others to get a thicker skin, they are just jokes and nothing serious was meant by anything said. That is all well and fine, as I know there will always be those who mock, critisize and chastigate my religion. The real point is that we seem to be the only religion that such mockery of is tolerated to the point of dismisal. If the same types of comments had been directed at Jews, Muslims, Hindus (pick a relgion) there would be a media uproar to beat the drum. Something stinks in Denmark (I'm part Danish so I can say that with no malice and as a paraphrased quote)

re: lame apology

Do you think that's how some Ute Fans felt about Hall's apology? Yeh, we laughed to, but "it's just plain wrong!"

As a former LDS Missionary to England, this display is nothing compared to what Missionaries encounter every single day. You guys are harmless "bush leaguers" in the world of insults.

The fact that BYU has won about 70% of All Team-Conference Championships since SDSU was admitted to the old WAC/MWC, surely, has nothing to do with SDSU's inferiority complex, Right?

The student section is a good thing. Their real embarassment should not be from the "Missionary Uniforms", (the bike helmets were the best), but the fact that their "Ignorant State College Education" still leads them to believe that Mormons are still polygamists.

Funny, Jews are not constantly tagged with the "Polygamy thing", even though Moses, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Solomon, David etc. were all practicing polygamists, with concubines to boot.

Mormons have not practiced polygamy for over 100 years. Those who do are ex-communicated. The Big Love and Texas poly's are not Mormons! Comprende?

They have never been on the roles of the LDS Church. They are no more Mormons than a Lutheran is a "Fundamentalist Catholic". Feel free to mix in a few History classes with your Higher Ed. experience.

re: lame apology

You need to lighten up. I'm mormon (though not a BYU fan thankfully) and I thought it was hilarious. Nothing wrong with good humor.

Avery

It is a nice gesture that some apologized, but I'd be interested to find out if they understand WHY some of that stuff is unacceptable in public.

Humor authority

I am a credentialed authority on humor. So for the humor-impaired, you can take my word for it that the "Which wife gave you mono?" sign was neither funny nor clever. It was more like Conan O'Brien's lame "Mormon song" skit a few months ago. The only people who laughed at either attempt were:

(a) people who hate Mormons

and

(b) Mormons who desperately want to prove they can take a joke.

Everyone else in the 100-and-above IQ club just shook their heads at the sad, pathetic lameness of the attempt.

There's good natured trash talking and then there's intolerence and bigotry. When SDSU's students keep hitting on the religious aspect then it comes way to close to being intolerence and bigotry and should be avoided.

Apology accepted.

I am mormon and I thought the sign was funny too. Jokes are meant to be funny and I am glad Jimmer was able to find the humor in it.

RE.: bluto

Nice response, except for a bit of a mistake. . . you mentioned some famous biblical "Jews." Sorry, but 66% of those you mentioned were not Jews. Try and remember the old adage, "All Jews are Israelites, but not all Israelites are Jews."

You say, "What's this have to do with SPORTS!" I then say what he Bible says, "Moses served on Pharaoh's Court!" or even the first biblical words. . . "In the Big Inning. . ."

Admit it...

The "which wife" sign was not funny, nor was it particularly offensive.

The obscene "cheers" were not funny, and were indeed offensive.

In contrast, South Park is usually funny and almost always offensive.

Seriously, people, do you really think moronic signs like "which wife gave you mono" are funny? If so, you have a seriously defective sense of humor.

And yes, anyone offended by said sign would do well to get a life.

A good gesture. I hope it makes a difference next time.

It's not only about hurt feelings or being able to take a joke; it's about being able to take your kids to a family event without exposing them to mockery of their religion (or of someone else's). Children do not understand that "You're still Mormon" is supposed to be funny.

Way to keep it clean, SDSU.

That sign crossed the line. Rest of it didn't bother me too much....

What happened to 'turn the other cheek"?

Brethren;
You need to loosen up. It was a joke; in poor taste, perhaps, but a joke. If you would take yor blinders off you would realize that not everyone loves the LDS Church, or the Catholic Church, or the Baptists or Islam and can't help themselves from spouting inane "witticisms". I bet you've done it yourselves. Stupidity is not a violation of the First Amendment. If it was, then people like Glenn Beck would have their mouths duct taped permanently.
