I agree. We should stop taxing people that are responsible enough to get married. Domestic partners can be abusive too. Quit taxing us!

Why not...

...let Johnson pay for it out of her own pocket?

For once the Eagle Forum got something right.

I don't know if $10 is an "undue burden" (esp. given what some people pay for weddings), but I do think that the assumption that marriage itself leads to domestic violence is deeply problematic. It's not the marriage, it's the abuser who is fully, and individually, responsible.

Here's an idea: an additional fine built into every conviction for domestic violence that would go to fund these same programs. Any objections?

Christine Johnson

For clarification:

"Johnson" makes donations to and serves on the boards of both the Rape Recovery Center and The Peace House Domestic Violence Shelter.

54% of people housed in domestic violence shelters are from traditional nuclear family.

The fee is optional.

I can't believe the Eagle Forum was right.

Who wants to bet this money would have gone toward fighting violence against women only? Most domestic violence shelters laugh at the men that ask for their help.

M, please provide citation.

I want hard facts proving D.V. Shelters turn away men.

Anonymous,

You want hard facts that shelters turn away men???

Others and I have advocated for abused men and their children for many years. We have talked to countless men who have been turned away by DV "shelters." But even more shocking is that we've talked to men who were "helped" by shelters, only they thought at first, only to be manipulated and further abused as the shelter helped their abusive wives abuse them and their children further.

The founder of the first women's shelter, Errin Pizzey (search for her), has written many articles on this backwards phenomenon and she has also been threatened by women running or supporting shelters because she continues to speak, write and document the truth and facts about the abuse and fraud virtually ALL shelters have turned into since her day of running the first one. Our shelters sound really against violence today, don't they?
