Saw Outside Providence on video this weekend and enjoyed it
so much I immediately wathched it a second time.It was a
beautifully done bitter-sweet,yet comedic story of blue-
collar life in the 70's.I could relate to the working class
New England Irish Catholic home.Alec Baldwin and Shawn
Hatosy were great!Congratulations to the Farrelly
brothers.I was expecting something a bit different but this
was a welcome surprise.They have always been and continue
to be entertaining. I'm looking forward to their next
project.

The main review shown herein misses. I'll explain.

To state that "subplots are never fully explored or
resolved" is an inaccurate understanding of the story
itself and the narrator's presence. This is a "coming of
age" story that mirrors the realities of growing up during
a period of time in a young person's life where many things
go unresolved and are often not fully explored. Dunphy
is "Out of Providence"; doesn't get second chances due to
his choices. He chooses not to resolve or explore much
because of his condition. There are moments of clarity for
him, but it's a comedic look wherein we realize that the
narrator has accepted his inabilities to reach "Providence"
both geographically and spiritually. His grades won't allow
him to reach Brown University (located in Providence), nor
will he get "providence" from a life that is mostly
misguided. He accepts this; hence the title.

The nostalgia employed here allows viewers who can relate
in any capacity to the characters to see that losing second
chances in youth doesn't necessarily translate into a
meaningless life. This is further supported by many
examples of Dunphy's loyalty to friends and family despite
his shortcomings.

The narrator is also the person who experienced this story
and may or may not remember everything fully and
completely. His narration and what he chooses to remember;
or what is remembered and how it's communicated is also
part of the movie's appeal and reality-based message.

As the trend in Hollywood moves more toward lower budget
movies like this one, we will be forced to anaylze
objectives and stories much more intelligently and
objectively. Finally, we'll be "Outside Patronization".
