An utter delight from beginning to end! You don't have to
love Shakespeare to enjoy this wonderful film, but it
helps. There are a lot of 'inside' gags that tickle. The
screenplay, staging, direction and acting are all
brilliant! What fun!

A note to whoever loads the movie section: When are you
going to add the new 6 theater complex in Tooele? It is a
splendid facility and deserves to have its showtimes
listed. Thank you.

Although I don't agree with Jeff Vice's four-star
rating to this movie, it is the best I've seen this year (I
know, I know, it's only January 13th). Not only did the
film seem impressively accurate in its portrayal of 16th
century England but the entire cast (save one) of actors
did a fabulous job with their respective characters.
The only thing I thought didn't fit well in this
film was Ben Affleck. All I could think about when
watching his scenes was what kind of strings Paltrow had to
pull to get him a part. Yes I know he's a star in his own
element but with his performance here, he has proven that
period films are not his forte. His English accent didn't
cut the mustard, nor did his acting abilities to tell you
the truth. I thought his part would have been better
represented with another actor.
Other than that, this movie was quite wonderful.
And for all those of you who have been following Paltrow's
career, you will see her in a whole new light in this film
:)

I loved the clever writing and excellent performances of the
entire cast. It made me wish I had paid more attention to
the other Shakespeare plays we studies in English (other
than Romeo and Juliet). I'm sure that many punch lines went
right over my head, but no matter, the movie was still

great film---very clever and extremely well written. My
vote for best picture

It was an enjoyable movie, I deffinately felt that my money
was well spent, but when it comes to the Oscars, it just
doesn't make the cut. Shakespeare in Love is much to "I'm
really shallow, and I don't really hit any real depths with
my script, or get anwhere on that." I mean what do we gain
from this? We learn that women should have the right to do
somthing they love, and that Shakespeare was a bastard. I
didn't feel that I had gained any greater knowledge about
the human spirit, than I had if I had scene Rush Hour or
Lethal Weapon 4. Yes, Shakespeare in Love was very witty,
and that's okay for best screenplay, but when it comes to
best picture it doesn't hold a candle to films that hit the
depths of human passion, like Elizabeth(my favorite movie
this year, even though it won't with best picture because
Saving Private Ryan will automatically win, however I don't
think SPR deserves to win, there were a lot of weak story
lines, holes, and plots), Saving Private Ryan, Pi, or Gods
and Monsters. I especially don't think Gwyneth Paltrow
deserves anything for Shakespeare in Love (I think she
should get a nomination for Sliding Doors if anything), as
much as I like her. First off, her role is not a very
difficult one, her character is rather shallow and cliche,
second, she just doesn't pull of looking like a boy at
all. That pretty much ruined the movie for me. The one
factor that I did really like was Ben Afflek, he brightened
up the whole film, and added a true comedic element, I
liked his character better than everyone else's, I found
every other character in that film to be so cliche it was
almost sickening! I also found the movie to be terribly
frustrating in the fact that it kept fluctuating between
wanting to be a drama, and a comedy. People may argue that
this is what Shakespeare writes like, but he usually tends
to stick with drama and adds a few jokes here in there,
this, the movie was just annoying. I also didn't like the
fact that the only references made in the movie were about
Romeo and Juliet (one of is worse plays). I have to admit,
that I don't like Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet (It's not
even a work of his own creation, he stole from some Italian
guy, who stole it from the Greeks), I more of a fan of
Hamlet and MacBeth. I did however, like the dog LOL! And
I must say that Judi Dench being the most fabulous actress
in the world put in another absolutely stellar performance
as Queen Elizabeth.

Good movie to take the wife to or girlfriend to. I wasn't
overly crazy about Fiennes as Will, but the rest of the cast
was quite good. Judi Dench (one of my favorite actresses)
was terrific as Queen Elizabeth. In fact, every time an
actress plays Elizabeth in the movies, she will likely be
compared to the Dench standard.

I went to this movie with great expectations. After the
first 15 minutes, I thought I would be disappointed, but
ended up loving the film. I got to see sides of Gwyneth
Paltrow I had never seen before. The romance is intense.
The re-enactment of Romeo and Juliet is as moving as the
original.

Fun movie but a little too much nudity.

I absolutely LOVED this movie - it's funny, romantic and
makes you cry in a good way. How could anyone say they
don't like Romeo and Juliet? HELLO!!! Someone who can't
even spell worth crap shouldn't criticize the greatest love
story ever written and also how it was portrayed in a film
that won best picture of the year! (Well deserved, I might
add!)

THIS MOVIE SUCKED!! IF you rated this movie 5,
you've got no sense what so ever!

And the only reason it gets that many stars is because the
actors rose above the material and the costumes were
spectacular. But the script is straight out of a bad (and I
know there's no other kind, but I mean really BAD) soap
opera. What did these two IDIOTS expect??? He was married
to someone else; she was engaged to someone else. Did they
really think they would be able to blissfully continue their
adulterous ways forever? Wasn't there a Dr. Laura
equivalent around to lecture them about the Stupid Things
People Do To Mess Up Their Lives? We were supposed to get
weepy because these two people put themselves in an
impossible situation? It would have been a far better movie
had they scripted it so that Will was trying to rekindle the
romance with his WIFE (you know, the mother of his
children), and they could have tied it into him writing "The
Taming of the Shrew." But I guess the complexities of a
marital relationship are just too much for Hollywood to
handle, so we have to settle for this dreck. I am
completely disgusted that this movie beat "Saving Private
Ryan" and "Life is Beautiful" (which I have not yet seen)
for Best Picture. On the one hand, you had two movies about
doing the right thing in the face of really ugly adversity,
and on the other you had a couple of self-indulgent people
fulfilling their desires not only at their own expense but
that of other people as well. All I can say is, yuck.

Saw it after winning the Oscar. Greatly disappointed! The
other four nominees were in a whole other class of
superiority. The "Academy" ought to be ashamed, embarassed
at very least!
bilbo | 7:28 p.m. March 24, 2007
It's so crap! The writing is not witty, it didn't engage me
at all. Yeah, the costumes were great, but every other
aspect of the film sucked, the characters were cliche and
Gwyneth Paltrow was just annoying!
