with an extra half on top of that 3! No match for
Chinatown this movie works by not trying to be anything
other than a beautifully scripted mystery drama.

The ties unveiled to the past lift The Two Jakes above the
ordinary with occasional hints of true wisdom finding their
way into the narrative.

Only loses top marks for one or two performances just below
top level - Ms. Tilly does not make the necessary impact on
screen to support the story line.
