own, it's the Chinese. This character drama by the noted
Chinese movie director Zhang Yimou was very absorbing,
about life in China at the time of Mao's reign as seen from
the viewpoint of the couple played by Ge You and the lovely
Gong Li, who are both a tower of strength in performing.
One of the most impressive things I saw at the beginning
was the puppet show that used what looked like dolls made
out of transparent plastic with facial lines drawn on them.
I also liked the way their mute daughter smiled. These were
all very facinating characters, and I highly recommend this
movie.
