years. A must-see. A good date movie, too. :)
to keep me from going crazy, this would be one of them!
The character of Fran is an inspiration to all girls who
aren't picture perfect but still dream of being able to
shine. Well acted, the pasa doble at the end of the movie
took my breath away!
I LOVE this film. The acting is overdone, but it is
supposed to be. "Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps" should be
voted
the most romantic dance ever. And Paul Mercurio (aka
Scott)
was amazing. So was Tara Morice, and I am very impressed
with her voice while singing "Time After Time"
love the dancing and music, the story, the actors and the
fact that it is Australian makes me like it even more (if
that is possible!)An excellent movie and is a definite must-
see!!
of watching over and over. I wish they would make a
sequel. Its a great movie and a soundtrack. Tara Morice has
a wonderful voice.
slams
ingrained cultural idiocy. It is just as much about
modern "sports" as it is about "dance". The cross cultural
metaphors of "Australians" and "Dance" are almost too
powerful and will loose many people who take themselves too
seriously -just like the has been parental and authority
figures in the movie. This film isn't about Australians and
Dance as much as it's about people. In that regard this
film is almost magical! If you can't see your own culture
(particularly Mormons with their religious cum
competitive emphasis on dance as cultural refinement) in
it,
you are not getting it.
Paul Mercurio gives a stunning, incredible Meta performance
of a Dancer playing a Dancer. The dancing is utterly superb
as the story tramples on organized dancing(anything)
itself.
absolutely fabulous, as was Tara Morise as Fran. The
dancing
was superb, and the acting was great. Especially in the
scene where Fran first encounter's Scott with her idea of
them dancing "his way at the Pan Pacifics". Paul Mercurio's
reaction in this scene, and his overall acting was
astounding. Well done to all... a great film... a very
elating experience.
"great" classical MGM musicals of the 1940s and 50s.
(I am a senior citizen, and I should know!)
In its simplicity, it warms the heart, tickles
the funny bone, with its old fashioned and lovely
love story, and oh, those great characters, the music, and
that stunning last 18 minutes! My friends
and I have seen this movie many times, and each time
we see something new. Loved Tara Morice, and, of course,
Paul Mercurio. Would love to see a sequel...if Mel
Gibson can do it, so can Baz Luhrmann!
is is possible at all to get a partner like Fran when you
are Scott Hastings?
however at the same time i am glad for the father as he
finally gets over his past dance career tragedy.
quiet character studies, Fran's bullying father who
eventually comes to respect her, Scott's quiet father who
is really the emotional core of this movie.... the thing I
can't understand is how the critics can rate it so low,
whereas one of the worst films I have ever seen - A.I -
makes the magazine covers, critics talk about it, it has
early DVD release etc, whereas "Strictly Ballroom" is
largely unknown and vastly underated... the only
explanantion I can think of is that critics only rate a
film on how big it's budget and how flash it looks, rather
than it's quality, and this film is quality. I've watched
it countless times and I love it. The film is as much
inspired satire as much as anything - the empty headed,
selfish egotistical majority of the dancers and their
corrupt Federation - theres some inspired comedy, the ADF
president's misquoted proverbs are particularly hilarious -
"Don't throw the baby away with the bathtub", "Don't upset
the Status Quo Vadis", and best of all "One bad egg can rot
the whole barrel!" Theres so much in this movie to watch
again and again and it demands repeated viewing.
The "flashback" sequences defy description, but are very
Baz Luhrman and the ending will you have you on the edge of
your seat cheering along with the crowd! One of the best
movies I've ever seen. Magic.
Coca Cola billboard background is absolutely breathtaking,
as is the finale. It's wonderful to be able to escape into
this magical world even if it's for only a couple of hours!
