Spartacus

this film on the tv a couple of years ago. the viewing
experience started off normally enough and then it got to
the bit where spartacus breaks out of the compound and all
his mates break out as well and i started over identifying
with the character in quite an unnerving manner. i mean i
bloody well WAS spartacus and truly was living every moment
of the thing. when it got to the tony curtis bit well that
was my brother and i just couldn't take the emotional stress
of experiencing everything spartacus was going through - you
know trying to be free 'n all so i removed myself from the
sofa in the living room and sat on the bottom stair in the
hallway in semi-darkness crying my eyes out. about
spartacus. about me. about trying to be free. about
everything. totally overwhelmed. never saw the end of the
film. brilliant though.

of the Roman slave Spartacus who dared challenge the might
of the Roman Republic a few years before Julius Caesar
came to power. Kirk Douglas plays the title character, a
slave trained to be a gladiator who leads a revolt and
then tries to lead his fellow slaves to freedom. Jean
Simmons plays the fellow slave he falls in love with.
Rounding out the cast are Tony Curtis as a fellow slave
who becomes Spartacus' close friend and scribe, Peter
Ustinov as Spartacus' former master, and Lawrence Olivier
as the Roman senator who makes it his mission in life to
put down the revolt. An excellent cast, headed by a
superb director, Stanley Kubrick.
