by the portrayal of Christine the older sister's seemingly
unselfish protection of her younger sibling Lea, and by
the promise of something quite wicked to come. I wasn't
disappointed. All four characters have their own game to
play and part of the fun is trying to work out just what
they are individually on about. This movie is haunting.
The direction and character portrayals create a story that
leaves the viewer wandering through their own mental maze
wondering if you watched this movie in its entirity
because you are a crazy as they are..
The
story did deal with a disturbing topic, incest between
sisters, but I felt compassion for the two women. They grew
up in abusive environments and were isolated at very young
ages. It was not hard to understand why they sought solace,
comfort and eventually pleasure in each others arms.
The pace of the movie was fitting, especially since the
story took place in an old victorian home where the lady of
the house and her daughter spent most of their time with
each other and apart from the outside world. The lives of
the two pairs were in fact parallel and this is really
evident during a scene when the lady and her daughter are
playing a very rousing and frenzied game of double
solitaire. The two sisters, maids who are spending their
sunday off in their bedroom, are equally rousing and
frenzied as they desperately grasp each other in a sensual
embrace.
The eventual spiral into madness has been slowly escalating
and when it climaxes in the final scene it is very
disturbing and yet I felt a very sad for the sisters.
Overall, this was an excellent film and I would definite

disturbed outlook of life in France back in the 1930's. I
thought this movie was quite fascinating in its own
disturbed way, and is very different to other films in the
way it involvs forbidden sexual encounters, in the form of
incestuous lesiban sex. The ending was of some brillance
yet it seemed that the older sister Christine, lost all
sanity within days rather then over a long period of time.
The movie itself would have been better off if it had
established a better explantion to the choice they sisters
made in they're final act of insanity (the brutal murder
of Madame and her daughter ). Overall, this film was
interesting aswell as disturbing true.
