First thing i noticed about The Apostle is how well the
heat of the south is conveyed. With no air conditioner in
sight, & heat waves lining those parched country roads, u
can almost feel the remorseless heat these southerners
endure. As a result, u feel drawn into the story.

The Apostle is an interesting film focusing on a man who
practices his christianity almost to the point of
obsession. Even though his antics & rantings get somewhat
tiresome u can't help but respect the man for having so
much dedication & passion for what he believes in. He isnt
without fault though, just like anyone else he grapples
with his demons, i.e, a drinking problem which alienates
his family & finds himself in hot water with the
authorities after an altercation leaves a man fatally
injured. Now on the run, he finds renewed spirit & purpose
as he feels compelled to spread the word of his faith to
isolated southern townships & making new friends along the
way. In his travels he becomes attracted to a woman with
simular problems & they hit it off. That's all i'll say...

WRAP UP
The Apostle is very character driven much like 'Sling
Blade' (another movie set in the south), no special
effects or ego driven actors. Robert Duvall skillfully &
relistically carries the movie with his passionate yet
troubled character.

If you appreciated the subtle, quiet yet powerful story
telling style of Sling Blade, u'll like this, but much
like Sling Blade, u'll have to be patient & let the
characters & story unfold at it's own pace to find the
heart & message of the movie.

I give it three stars instead of four only because it's a
bit slow in parts.
