There's nothing inherently wrong with getting naked in the middle of nowhere. If I recall correctly, Colin Fletcher's The Backpacker's Bible (a favorite of my youth) extolled the virtues of hiking au naturale. I do seem to recall advice to do it only in remote areas and to keep a cover-up handy in case you ran into other hikers.

Sounds like this guy was more of a flasher who took his hobby to the trails.

On the one hand, this seems like a victimless crime.

But you just know that Medicare or Medicaid is going to pay for his skin cancer treatment one of these days.

What's wrong with a little naked hiking? If a man and women were hiking naked together, it would be no big deal. Relax...............

The law's the law. That's why I think Utah and Arizona authorities should go after polygamists. Polygamy is expressly against the law. Utah's law is part of its constitution and is written broadly enough to prohibit the sort of "spiritual marriages" into which FLDS enter. Both the laws against nude hiking and plural marriage might be ruled unconstitutional unless challenged, but it is the duty of the attorney generals of Utah and Arizona to enforce the law, not to decide which laws might be ruled unconstutional if challenged.

I wasn't there so I can only say, unless this man was lewd and seeking attention to "shock" other hikers, there is no crime here. People get naked at remote swimming holes and hot springs all the time. I suppose a remote hike isn't much different.

Should we file charges against National Geographic for all the magazines in print at the public libraries?

My children and I have a right to NOT see a 61 year-old man naked when we're hiking in the woods, or anywhere else. If he feels that strongly about nature he needs to join a nudist camp.

What if you're hiking with your kids, or some other young group. This would not be appropriate. Maybe he should get off the trail and go find some real wilderness where no one would run into him.

Hope he gets bitten.

Or the "everyone knows a naked body means sexuality-- and that's dirty too!"

Ha.. yes, what if you ARE hiking with your kids? They may see a naked man and be forever psychologically damaged. We need to teach our children that they should be extremely ashamed of their bodies and react with horror if they see any nudity, no matter the context. This is the healthiest thing to do. Do it for the children!!!

The best way to de-sexualize nudity is for everyone to have a naked day.

This guy as every right to hike in the nude if he does it on his own property and is not seen by those who would be offended by his natural hike. The problem comes from those that see him. Sure, some may not take offense, but those who do have a legitimate gripe also.

This has nothing to do with the human body being a dirty thing but it does have to do with respecting others. After all, if someone gets offended because a prayer is offered at a school, what is the difference if someone is offended by having to look at a wrinkly old man without clothes.

A thousand pardons Prude, but if I were a little kid hiking with MY parents and a naked old man came by riding a bike, I am quite sure the three of us would be laughing our (blanks) off!
