There's nothing inherently wrong with getting naked in the middle of
nowhere. If I recall correctly, Colin Fletcher's The Backpacker's
Bible (a favorite of my youth) extolled the virtues of hiking au naturale. I do
seem to recall advice to do it only in remote areas and to keep a cover-up handy
in case you ran into other hikers.
Sounds like this guy was more of a flasher who took his hobby to the trails.

The law's the law. That's why I think Utah and Arizona authorities
should go after polygamists. Polygamy is expressly against the law.
Utah's law is part of its constitution and is written broadly enough to
prohibit the sort of "spiritual marriages" into which FLDS enter.
Both the laws against nude hiking and plural marriage might be ruled
unconstitutional unless challenged, but it is the duty of the attorney generals
of Utah and Arizona to enforce the law, not to decide which laws might be ruled
unconstutional if challenged.

I wasn't there so I can only say, unless this man was lewd and seeking
attention to "shock" other hikers, there is no crime here. People get
naked at remote swimming holes and hot springs all the time. I suppose a remote
hike isn't much different.

My children and I have a right to NOT see a 61 year-old man naked when
we're hiking in the woods, or anywhere else. If he feels that strongly
about nature he needs to join a nudist camp.

not be appropriate. Maybe he should get off the trail and go find some real

Ha.. yes, what if you ARE hiking with your kids? They may see a naked man and be
forever psychologically damaged. We need to teach our children that they should
be extremely ashamed of their bodies and react with horror if they see any
nudity, no matter the context. This is the healthiest thing to do. Do it for the
children!!!

This guy as every right to hike in the nude if he does it on his own property
and is not seen by those who would be offended by his natural hike. The problem
comes from those that see him. Sure, some may not take offense, but those who
do have a legitimate gripe also.
This has nothing to do with the human body being a dirty thing but it does have to do with respecting others. After all, if someone gets offended because a prayer is offered at a school, what is the difference if someone is offended by having to look at a wrinkly old man without clothes.

I'm sixty-two, retired work out regularly, watch what I eat and weigh the
same as I did in high school. As you can guess, I'm not from Utah.
My wife says I'm buff and wouldn't mind seeing me riding through the wilderness in the buff which makes me laugh and laugh.

Bottom (pun intended) line, indecent exposure includes nudity in public. I
agree with the poster who said whatever he does in the privacy of his own
property is his business but whatever he does in public - well lets just say
there are laws. :-)

This incredible crime is a breach of the homeland security act and now it is
even larger due to the offender crossing state lines. I hope the FBI, CIA, ATFA
is on to this. Nice to be safe 'cause one never knows where the enemy is
lurking.. This is surely part of a conspiracy.

I was being sarcastic. I thought that was obvious. I suppose the obvious escapes some people.
And, m and others, pointing out that there are laws against nudity is, well, not particularly helpful to the debate. Though I suppose some people get a certain thrill out of stating the obvious. I think the real question is whether the law makes sense.

I have kids. Unless the man was lewd they would probably laugh at the situation
- and I would be very protective of them. When I was a kid we went rafting on
the Colorado a couple times near Moab and I sometimes saw people bath and wash
clothes in the nude at some campsites - usually discretely, but it was never a
big deal. I believe a healthy view of sexuality is to realize how normal the
human body is, even when it's old, young, fat, thin, or a different skin
color. I strongly shun pornography in all it's forms and how it distorts
the true beauty and appreciation we should have for our bodies.
By the way - Adam and Eve may have done much hiking in the nude, apparently Isaiah preached naked and barefoot for three years (Is 20:3); and I recall an apostle named Peter who was fishing "bare beanned and butt-nekkid" (direct quote) when the resurrected Saviour appeared to him.

People who enjoy au naturale hiking can do so to their hearts' content.
Those who are curious about experiencing the great outdoors in all their glory
would have a way to expose themselves to it. Everyone else can find something
else to do on those days.

A member of my family is the assistant director of the ATF (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives), but I have never heard of the ATFA... is it closely related? A quick google search turned up American Task Force Argentina, American Turkish Friendship Association, Alabama Treasure Forest Association and Australian Timber Flooring Association to name a few... perhaps someone could help me figure out which of these would be interested in an interstate nude hiker?

Unless you have their permission, the viewing actually comes at a cost to them, hence the reaction this man got. Of course the law makes sense. I don't know anyone who would want nudity
to be legal in public. I certainly wouldn't want every Tom, Dick and Harry
(or hairy) running around naked. Although in most cases it would be
