If your christian faith is based on the bible, then of course homosexuality is incompatible with christianity. Is no one reading the bible?

I've always wondered if, in those churches where such votes are taken by the congregation, God gets a vote in these sorts of disputes.

Actually, assuming the fine Methodists actually care what God thinks and seek that guidance, I suppose the real point of the dispute here is not so much whether God gets a vote but rather, has he voted. And, if so, what was it.

And so the world turns.

I always marvel at religions that allow members to vote on what the beliefs will be.

In olden times people made with their own hands idols of stone or metal and then worshipped them.

Today we see this as ridiculous but how many worship something they created with their words and ideas?

Is a religion created by popular vote any less man-made than a Golden Calf?

In most spheres of life we exercise our will and judgement and that is good.

In religion, however, (I personally, at least) hope to tap into something a little wiser and more noble than myself; if I already had all the answers why would I need the religion?

For some I guess it is more of a social thing; truly it is the philosophy of men, mingled with scripture.

It is like the joke about not wanting to be a member of any club that would accept me as a member; why would you want to worship at a place where you made up all the teachings? (other than maybe Warren Jeffs)

If you don't like what the preacher preaches, fire him!

If the doctrines cramp your style, change them!

Halleluja!

Praise ME!

The UMC (United Methodist Church) has been open to the scriptures and have noticed that God is love and that we should... and thus they have discussed with vigor about socalled gay marriages.

For 25 years maybe the UMC has constantly reviewed its teachings as it closely follows the Bible and what Jesus purportedly said. They continue to pray and witness and love.

Not a bad way to approach the world: prayer, witness, and love for all. Jesus did teach love for all, didn't he. OH... gads.

Hmmmmmmm.

followers of christ love their fellow man best when they help them understand that following the Savior's commandments leads to the only true joy and peace.

Nice try Mark, but the Savior taught much much more than only "love". You may want to check out some of the doctrines on "repentance", which if done properly is demonstrating your "love" for God. Read the entire bible, not just the parts that back up your personal philosophy.

Did everyone read the comment on idolatry? I found it very insightful. The most useful post here!

It's no surprise to me when some people always use the word "Love" as a blanket to do what ever their heart disire in the name of God. But, they seems to forget the following passages from His words:
Leviticus 18:22, Romans 1:24-29, 1 Cor 5:9-11 and many other passages that reveal sexual impurity will not inherit the kingdom of God. Church is for all people, but the church also has a responsibility to preach the truth. Indeed, God is Love. He sent His only son to die for you so you can repent. And that's the gospel truth.
