I still think that if you want multiple spouses all sharing in parenthood ect.. is all fine and good between concenting adults.
But the forced rapes of children.
The brain washing of kids into feeling its all they can do is breed and raise kids It is completly wrong.
All people deserve the right to know there choices and to make them withought fear or intimidation from there peers.
Cults like the FLDS need to learn your kids are not cattle. There humans who have the right to a better life

The Nancy Grace show had on one of the lawyers for one of the kids last night, and shut down all of this noise of abuse. Apparently, the lawyers of these boys have not even been notified of any such abuse. Texas is just making this up as they go. How convinient for allegations to appear almost a month after these kids have been away from their parents in one on one interviews with CP-SS agents.

You're suggesting CPS is stating that only FLDS children suffer broken bones ?

Come on - although I am no flag-waving fan of CPS or most other government agencies, I seriously doubt the state of Texas would be able to 'cover up' all the civil rights violations they have been accused of.

The children are in custody, thanks to the 'Sarah' phone call (which I believe was false, according to recent reports) AND because the state witnessed what they believed to be multiple teenage girls who were pregnant. Broken bones and other injuries which may later surface will, in my opinion, strengthen Texas CPS' position that the children are better off in the long run away from YFZ where they will be afforded freedom of choice in their lives.

Comments have been made on other articles regarding the heavy work lifestyle of FLDS males and that is a possible explanation for broken bones - however, it has also been stated that even if the broken bones were not caused by abuse, child labor laws were likely violated.

I'll close by adding that I support legalizing polygamy (consenting ADULTS), but will never support the abuse of children.

The pile of evidence of evil deeds is threatening to topple over now and crush the men and women who perpetrated the deeds.

A 17 year old with 3 kids? Ick.
Less than 10% | 5:18 a.m. May 1, 2008
That sounds like a good percentage of kids without broken bones. Not knowing the incidence, but how many of kids get their fingers slamed in doors by siblings; broken arms, legs, collar bones. Just like the previous comment, I don't think I was ever at YFZ, but you could find evidence of a broken jaw if you knew what to look for on my xrays.
sosueme | 5:37 a.m. May 1, 2008
Out of 460 children 41 have signs of broken bones at some point? lets take the same number out here and see how many broken bones can be found. come on texas we are waiting for real proof of abuse if you have none GIVE THOSE CHILDREN BACK, or face kidnapping charges. You three at the top of this unconstitutional raid better get ready to tender your resignations. We the people of american will except nothing less. The judge, the sheriff and the head of dcs. And if you try one more sensationalized newspaper article and our so not free press reports it we will start a press and television blackpout that will bring advertizers to their senses and americans will really see how corrupt you really are.

I have 7 brothers and sisters. Out of all of us 2 have had broken bones in childhood, making the rate of fractures 1/4 out of all of us, or 25%. The rate of broken bones or previous fractures for the FLDS kids is about 10%, according to Texas CPS official numbers. Why didn't someone take steps to remove my sibs and I from our obviously abusive home (sarcasm)? Because it's common for kids to hurt themselves, that's why. Stop making your case in the media, CPS, and do your job right. If there's abuse keep the kids, if there isn't send them back. Easy to do, isn't it?
in reply... | 6:24 a.m. May 1, 2008
to sosueme, I think you have it a little bit wrong here. The raid was based on evidence collected over FOUR years. And when you have how many teenage girls pregnant and with three and four children already, you don't consider that abuse??? You need to read a little more. Those people who call themselves parents don't deserve their children back. And no, I do not work for the state or DCFS, but I do applaud the actions of those in Texas who did not sit on their butts and do nothing, like the ones here in Utah did. Even my family in the Deep Southern US states don't condone this kind of behavior as far as incest, inbreeding, teenage pregnancy, etc...
Be Afraid, be very afraid! | 6:24 a.m. May 1, 2008
I think the nationwide average of kids who have had broken bones is about 1 in 3, and that does not include broken bones from abuse. If the FLDS ratio really is 1 in 10, that is pretty good if you ask me.
"Protective" Child Services has no right to go in and steal 460 children from their mothers on the basis of a fake phonecall and no evidence.
On the other hand, the polygamist fathers should have been thrown in jail long ago. If it is against the law, enforce it.
Money source? | 6:31 a.m. May 1, 2008
To me there's a big piece of the story that's not being talked about. I understand the focus on the government agency that took away the kids (CPS), but what about the government agency(ies) that might have been sending all the supporting dollars?

I wish I could read a story from a journalist who went to all the applicable welfare agencies and was told either "Yes, we send XX dollars a month to the FLDS ranch" or "No, we have no claims from the FLDS ranch."

avengeance | 6:36 a.m. May 1, 2008
One must wonder why, when protecting the privacy of abused children is supposedly paramount, Texas officials are so eager to splatter pictures of these children and every possible wild allegation against the parents all over the public media.

Is polygamy (the belief that a man could be married in the sight of God to more than one woman at a time) actually illegal in Texas, or only bigamy (registering or attempting to register more than one State-sanctional marital contract with the government)?

Time to start calling CPS when you see members of the gestapo with their children (if they have any).
Parent | 6:36 a.m. May 1, 2008
One of the news reports expounded on seeing no play things in the compound other than trampolines. Wow wee a bone fracturing machine. Take any 500 active kids out of America, access for fractures what percentage do you have? Why is it these officials will only release the incriminating evidence? I'm still sickened at the sherriffs' releasing the information about the caretakers bed in the temple so the media could have a hey day with that one.
C'mon guys give us a proper report about how those kids are struggling seperated from their moms.

If the girl is under 18 as cps says, why are they wanting to get custody of the baby. This is the only case i know of that they are trying to take the baby from whom the cps says is a "underage" girl, can it be that the cps are telling lies and the girl is really 18 as her mother and lawyer says. humm something to think about.
At what point | 6:47 a.m. May 1, 2008
Does CPS know for sure how many children they have in custody? "But it was too hard to count them; they kept using the bathroom." Say what?!? You mean you weren't smart enough to count them one by one as they entered the place, or got off the bus?

My favorite was the story on the two boys earlier this week. "We haven't lost them, we just don't know where they are." A confidence inspiring statement if there ever was one.

And now this latest: Out of 460 kids ages 0 to 17, 41 of them have had a broken bone at some point in their life. Man, what a shocker. I guess we need to head down to any local elementary, middle, or high school and round up all those kids, too. I'll wager anything the percentage of kids who've had a broken bone at some point in their life is greater than 1-in-10.

From the few non sensationalized details given here and there, I believe there was child abuse going on at YFZ Ranch. But all of this other innuendo without real evidence crap that CPS keeps feeding the media makes them look stupid and incompetent.
Child Broken Bones | 6:47 a.m. May 1, 2008
The four most common causes of broken bones of Children are bicycle riding, basketball, football and roller sports. They cause about 1.5 million medically treated bone and muscle injures among children 5 to 14 years of age. I noticed in the videos from the Compound that there are no bicycles, Basketball courts, Football Fields, Skating areas, Baseball Fields, Soccer Fields, Swing Sets, Slides, Monkey Bars, etc.etc.etc...How did so many young children break their bones...Just an observation!
Lucy | 7:14 a.m. May 1, 2008
Why do so many readers feel the need to defend the FLDS? If this were some other group I doubt the support would be so great. The LDS church ceased to practice polygamy 100 years ago so there shouldn't be personal conflict over the practice. This is illegal. These children are being raised in a COMPOUND where the adults are practicing ILLEGAL ACTIONS. Stop defending this just because your possibly had an ancestor who was a polygamist. The lifestyle in Utah wasn't practiced in the same way. These boys and girls don't have freedom to choose and need our protection not 'wink, wink, nod, nod' because we haven't quite decided if the Manafesto was inspired or not.
Denny Andrews | 7:22 a.m. May 1, 2008
It'll be interesting to see how this plays out. We do have an innate sense of what we do and don't want to see happen to us, even growing up in a prison compound. I don't imagine talk alone can convince these kids to have sex with their uncles, no matter how good the story.
Child Rape | 7:22 a.m. May 1, 2008
"CPS officials believe that of the 53 girls believed to be between the ages of 14 and 17, more than 30 have children, are pregnant or both. Six of those girls have two children, and two have three children."

In a small, isolated community such as the YFZ Ranch, everyone knows everyone. If even one 14-year-old girl was pregnant, the whole community would know about it.

The fact that over 30 14-17 y/o girls were pregnant or already had babies shows that all of the adults at the YFZ Ranch (mothers included) knew and supported these underage girls before forced into these "spiritual" marriages.

This is a tightly controlled community, where the men control everything. None of these pregnancies happened by chance.

The truth is coming out and all of the FLDS claims of religious discrimination will be proven to be nothing but lies. They've be caught in their own web of incentuous child rape.

There's no doubt in anyone's mind that the FLDS are beyond creepy and have committed horrible acts (we'll wait for the courts to officially label them as crimes), but has it ever occurred to you that CPS is ALSO at fault?? There is a bizarre smear campaign going on, and it's becoming glaringly apparent that it's being done to cover up some horrific mistakes they've made along the way. For the record, CPS admitted that no X-rays have been taken. How in the world can you claim there are broken bones when the evidence isn't conclusive?? Thanks to CPS's incompetence and aggression, a lot of this will likely be thrown out in court. As emotional as this is, try to stick to the FACTS, JND. The means don't justify the ends when our most basic constitutional rights are being violated. They could have pulled this off without trampling rights, but they didn't. Everyone will suffer as a result of this fiasco.
Ignorant CPS haters | 7:48 a.m. May 1, 2008
The broken bones are irrelevent. Just another piece of the puzzle. The incest and teen rape is appalling. 3 kids before your 17, do the math.

My first thought is why are the mothers fighting against the investigation unless they have something to hide? Are they worried the CPS may find something worse?

The CPS doesn't have some vendetta against the FLDS. They are just collecting information. Why would they make up stories? Clearly, even from the minimal information we have, these children were in harms way, and required their removal.

Trust the system until you have proof the system has failed. Teenage girls have babies-thats enough proof to remove them from the parents until they can sort things out.

re: Lucy | 8:03 a.m. May 1, 2008
What makes you so sure that all of the people defending the FLDS are LDS?

Reasonable people understand the difference between polygamy practiced by consenting adults and child rape resulting from forced marriages of underage girls.

It's sad to see families broken up and mothers separated from their children, especially on such a massive scale, but in this case, it's looking more and more like CPS did the right thing in removing all of the kids.

Hopefully, some of the families will eventually be reunited, but with over 30 underage girls who are pregant or already mothers, many of the fathers, at least, and probably some of the mothers deserve to have their kids taken away permanently.

The girls in the FLDS community have Constitutional rights also and nobody has the right to force them into a marriage, especially when they're still considered children in the eyes of the law.
Nan B White | 8:14 a.m. May 1, 2008
Exactly 60% of my children had broken bones as children. The other 40% had serious burns (it happened in a restaurant in full view of many patrons, luckily). We never had anyone question why our children had such notable damage. Should we have lost "custody" of our son who suffered many additional broken bones as a young adult and had to have months of home care?

David S | 8:21 a.m. May 1, 2008
More allegations.

Why are so many defending the FLDS? Because concerns over this community could have been addressed in a way that did not tramatize so many. Also, NOTHING has been proven and so many are quick to assume guilt based only on accusations, and here we are being handed more questionable ones.

If we cheer the taking of children from their parents in this case, based soley on accusations, and before a thorough investigation has taken place (it appears the investigation began AFTER the kids were taken) then we are all sitting ducks waiting for our children to be taken when our neighbors or the state reacts out of fear to our actions.
Bill | 8:26 a.m. May 1, 2008
Then they should have removed the the men and left the women and children together, untill they sorted it out.
Goebbels | 8:26 a.m. May 1, 2008
What kind of Propaganda is this? 1 in 10 had evidence of a fracture at some point in the past? That proves nothing, that is like going into a class of 30 elementary school kids and seeing that 3 had once broken a bone, so their parents are likely abusive. What a Joke.
bones | 8:28 a.m. May 1, 2008
The broken bones are indeed just another piece of the puzzle with Rod Parker, the FLDS attorney stating that they are not a result of abuse but brittle bone disease which is a autosomal dominant disease. If you find it too frequently one is forced to consider inbreeding and we know that the FLDS don't marry within the family. Oh wait, we do since Fumerase Deficiency is also found in the community. Seven years ago there were 12 total cases of Fumerase outside of the FLDS community while the 10,000 FLDS had 20 cases.

Also of note, CPS was not making a statement to the media about broken bones.

Get real!

"Why would they make up stories"???

Are you that naive?? Do you believe everything that a police officer says is true?
Could that be why Texas has the LARGEST prison population of innocent people in the U.S. (people found innocent after years in prison by DNA)
I once had a friend that was a captain on a large city police force. He was such a nice guy that he would bring a gun for his suspects just in case they didn't have one.
This worked for years until he shot and killed an innocent guy and supplied him with a nice gun. He forgot to notice there were several witnesses that saw the plant Including a rookie cop the wouldn't play. He was ultimately caught , jailed and killed in prison. At first I believed him but as time went on, I discovered the lie. Make the arrest no matter if you need to bring the evidence.

What is so bad about polygamy? Canada courts recently ruled that polygamy could not be considered a crime. So it is not illegal up their.

I would much rather they would go after all the homosexual couples who have kids.

At least the FLDS people are religious. I do not doubt they are sincere about that.

As for broken bones, does anybody really think CPS will not use whatever twisting of facts they can to justify their case and cover their butts for the abusive use of power they have displayed. I would bet if a kid was interviewed and answered yes to the question of had he ever broke a bone, and then was further questioned by CPS that the broken bone was due to abuse ... they would call him a liar if he denied abuse.

I have 8 kids and 3 had broken bones. Lucky for me 2 were at school for their broken arms and my son was 14 and on his bike in the rain. I did forget that one of these girls was 11 months old and had 4 fingers broke at once. While saying goodbye to a friend she quickly leaned in my arms for a kiss and my friend slammed the door before she saw her move& her 4 fingers got caught in the door.At 2 my son walked behind our swing set while I was hanging the wash on the line. He got hit by the girls on the glider. He had his chin split 3 times. At 12 in a neighbors garage he fell from a ladder. Did I tell you he was on ritalin from age 5? One of the girls was playing volley ball at school and hit the pole. She was hurt so many times at school...accident prone.

Why haven't we rounded up all illegal aliens and shipped them home? It's because illegal doesn't always mean "evil" and society recognizes this. Also, laws do change.

If polygamists are evil or dangerous, just by virtue of being polygamists, then that includes a pretty illustrious group of early Mormon leaders, as well as prominent Biblical characters.

Physical/sexual abuse is evil, and should be investigated and prosecuted. But to march in and cart hundreds of children off when nothing has been proven is condemning, prosecuting and punishing without due process.
Bruce | 8:41 a.m. May 1, 2008
After doing some research, it appears that each year Texas CPS has cases of child rape, molestation, abuse, and even death in their foster care system...many, many more than they are accusing FLDS of having. They are not a credible organization and have an awful track record. Allowing them jurisdiction over these kids just won't work. They can't even handle the Texas ghetto and barrio children without putting them in harm's way.
Telling Statistic | 8:43 a.m. May 1, 2008
To me, the most revealing statistic was from a few days ago, that the number of children 13 and younger were evenly split between male and female, but the 14-17 year old population was 53 females and (I think) 3 males. While underage spiritual marriages are WRONG WRONG WRONG and everything else I think they do is WRONG WRONG WRONG, the overlooked travesty in this case is that of the Lost Boys who are raised in this brainwashed environment and then "kicked out" as teens with NO CLUE as to how to function in the "worldly world". Truly sad.

Also, to those who think the defenders of the FLDS are LDS with polygamist ancestry? NOT. This board is open to anyone in the world to comment - and I guarantee that the controlling, distorted, sick MEN of the FLDS compounds are the ones up late at night tap tapping away their "defense" of their sick and wrong view of the world on these comment boards.

I am just praying for these people.
mypc46 | 8:49 a.m. May 1, 2008
As for how old the mothers look: my daughter was 19 and living in her own home when her child got whooping cough when going for well baby care. She almost lost her baby because the nurse said she looked 14. They had already taken a baby from a deaf mom. There were 30 babies who got sick from that office and many mothers were treated like it was their fault. As a ticked off grandmother I made sure they knew I was helping her with the child and she was almost 20. Her other offence was asking to have her child receive breast milk she had pumped. It was still in the fridge after 10 days in isolation unit. The child had reflux and was at risk if on formula.
Careful Reader | 8:50 a.m. May 1, 2008
To the commentator titled "To JND"

You are right that "a lot of this will be thrown out in court." I'll go one step further. Almost none of this will end up in court. CPS can remove children on an allegation and evidence obtained while investigating a hoax. However, prosecutors can't use any of that evidence if it was obtained improperly. I think we'll find that none of the evidence obtained from the compound and none of the evidence obtained in interviews is admissible in court. I think Texas knows that and they are unlikely to ever bring a case. However, they don't need a convication to keep the kids and they'll do just that.

To the commenter going by "Ignorant CPS haters"

The fact that a 14-16 year old girl has had a child doesn't normally lead to her being removed from her parents--that rarely happens. Moreover, it is normal in cases where children are removed for parents to seem like they are "fighting against the investigation." It is also normal for someone who has screwed up to try to cover up -- with ridiculous stories about broken bones & temple beds. This is why I distrust Texas CPS.
Joe Schmoe | 8:51 a.m. May 1, 2008
I am certainly NOT defending these people! I am the oldest of 6. I personally have broken my right arm 3 times, I have broken my collar bone, I broke my ankle, ribs, and I have broken 3 different fingers at least 2 times each! I concidered myself a very normal and VERY active young boy......

Re: Art | 8:53 a.m. May 1, 2008
So you think that the CPS raid is just part of some communist plot and isn't really related to child abuse?

Somehow CPS forced the FLDS to move to Texas where their disgusting practice of raping child brides could be used as an excuse to break up families.

The communists are soooo clever.

You apologists have failed to do your research. I laugh when any of you cite the FLDS propaganda site. There are countless stories of victims. I've never seen this many victims of any so called faith. There's plenty of names, not just Flora and Carolyn.

Explain to me why so many babies die in this religion. I've seen the baby cemetary on a program about the FLDS. Why are so many babies dying in this religion?

You fail to explain why some of these boys have said they have been molested. They admitted this to investigators and it is in journals. So these kids are lying too?

This religion is sick. Freedom of religion? Yeah right. They are abusing the system. They have for years. The cycle needs to end.

Good point. I know most of us are too young to remember, however I've read that following the 1953 raid of the FLDS, they received so much sympathy that their numbers swelled. By all I've seen and heard, it really appears that Texas and CPS is conducting this like a witch hunt, civil rights be danged. I think that's a dangerous course.

too funny that FLDS people from Utah are posting here pretending to be regular folk. Hey - we know it's you. No one in their right mind would stick up for these FLDS child and women abusers. Only FLDS and people from Afganistan would consider the suffocating controls placed by the FLDS as being acceptable. Fess up, people - if you support FLDS here then you ARE FLDS or you are extremely strict radical muslim (where the women can't go out and the kids are traded and married off as children.
