Call it American I-dull

Dull? | 5:05 p.m. April 30, 2008
Well, it wasn't dull to me. I enjoyed most of the performances and
especially enjoyed seeing Paula Abdul get confused. Some weeks she seems to be
on some sort of tranquilizer or other mind-numbing drug, such as alcohol. Other
weeks she is lucid enough to call upon her 1,000-word vocabulary. This week she
couldn't even remember that Jason had sung only one song before she
launched into her critique of his second song. Obviously she had made her mind
up about his future performance after seeing him rehearse. That's why live
reality TV is so much more entertaining than sitcoms -- you never know what to
expect. The producers don't even know for sure. My only wish is that
there was a prime time variety show. Many were extremely successful back in the
day, and now we have almost no venue on network TV for the best artists of the
day outside a guest spot on Leno or Letterman. I'd be willing to bet the
public would eat up a reincarnation of something like the Carol Burnett Show,
the Glen Campbell Show, the Burt Bacharach Show, the Donny and Marie Show, etc.
