"Parker has disputed the CPS count of teen mothers. He said that from talking to ranch residents, he believes at least 17 of those labeled as minors by child welfare authorities are actually adults."

The "eyeball ID" CPS used to finger underage girls may stand up; after all, they used pretty experienced "eyeballs."

On the other hand, in may not. Remember the "Karate Kid" movies? Ralph Macchio was a very believable high-schooler well into his mid-thirties.

You don't always get what you "see."

the State baby

So Texas is worried the mom just might run off with the newborn or what? I must say I am so embarrassed to see law enforcement used like this in the USA. Oh I long for the days when people are treated like shareholders of Govt rather than mere property of the State.

Concerned

the State baby: I believe what Texas might be more concerned about is the possiblitity that the hospital room of this poor girl (who's already been through a lot of emotional turmoil already) might be overrun by news reporters with cameramen in tow. She needs peace and quiet, and so does that baby.

Jeesh! Even celebrity babies don't get this much media attention!

Whose baby?

There seems to be emerging evidence that underage girls were being groomed to have sex with men and there is a high pregnacy rate amongst girls claiming to be under 17.
Whatever the rights and wrongs of the state intervention what is abundantly clear is that deeply disturbing exploitation of children was being perpetrated. What responsible agency could ignore this?
A field day/weeks/months for the legal profession, but at the heart of this is inescapable fact that abuse of minors was systematically institutionalised in this compound and hundreds of young lives have been damaged. As yet unclear is what other damage may result from the interventions in recent weeks. This is the largest sexual exploitation ring I can recall and the guilty adults will have brought untold damage and huge financial costs to Texas. I fear for the children of these young women both now and in the future. What a wicked situation to bring children into!

Child welfare officials and state troopers stand guard outside a Texas maternity ward while a teenage girl gives birth.

State officials say she's on a list of minors taken into state custody. A child born to a ward of the state also becomes a ward of the state.

That's a bitter pill to swallow, no matter who you are.

Mom for now

The Mother can keep the baby for now. Until Texas decides, without cumbersome due process, to move it. No telling what this woman might say to her child!

Anthony Samuelson

There is another facet of this FLDS affair that, so far as I am aware (and I live in England), has been overlooked. All these children are individually represented by lawyers. Right? Lawyers are officers of the Court. Right? The lawyers are not representing the mothers, the husbands or the FLDS. Their only duty is to their child client. If their client is under age and has had sexual intercourse their duty will require them to protect their client from more of the same and to sue the perpetrator whoever he may be. Someone tell me: Have we heard from any of the appointed counsel?

I see a lot of disbarments coming out of this. And a lot of lawyers getting sued by children once they attain adulthood. Particularly the male children who are thrown out of the FLDS so that the old men at the top can indulge in multiple relationships.

This one's going to run and run.

Baby in CPS

So..when they find out that she is 18 (possibly telling the truth? I am sure not EVERY FLDS lies) and they have her baby, are they going to take the baby regardless? I can't tell the difference between 18 or 17 by eyeballing... This might start a whole new mess! "A baby born to a ward of the state becomes a ward of the state." Sounds like the same mantra given by slave owners about babies born to slaves "a baby born to a slave becomes the property of the mother's master"...the CPS statement is almost a word for word quote as spoken by the Virgina Courts in the 1800's.

Modesty

Are the police going to watch as she pushes the baby out? Are they going to handcuff the baby? I almost say this seriously. She probably feels like a prisoner whose privacy and modesty is being violated. I wonder if the Father is going to be present to see his new baby? Probably not since Texas CPS and the public has labeled EVERY Father a perverts. I bet the dad is not even a few years older than her..oops! He is a young dad!

masked_data

I can hardly wait until the daddy comes forward to claim his newborn child.

hmmmmmm

Tony if you read back in articles
you will find out that many of the lawyers came forward to say there clients who once said they were over 18 were actually children
So the lawyers are doing there job by reporting that
and also apparent that some of these girls are opening up to there lawyers

Just a thought - you don't suppose this disorganized raid is being used to distract the American public from more important things going on elsewhere? ...Yeah, me too.

With any luck at all, the baby-daddy is on the ranch and his DNA taken. I see how the number of kids in custody keeps climbing. This must be that number 463 or is this 464?

Grandmother Present at Birth

I am glad at least, regardless of their beliefs, that the teen's (maybea teen?/maybe not?) mother was there for the birth..I am glad CPS gave compassion. There is nothing like having your mother with you while in labor. Thank you Tx CPS for the compassion and love you showed to her.

Chai Tea

Sheesh...How about having your husband with you when you give birth? I never wanted my mother, but my husband was there for both of my children's births.

CPS will take this child. Wait and see. And if the mother IS over 18 - she will be sent away to join the other mothers.

This is wrong. It is just plain wrong. Let the mothers and children return to their homes and remove the fathers.

But CPS won't because these children mean guaranteed paychecks. They and the Alcohol/Drug Abuse agencies ensure their paychecks by saying their clients are abused/abusers.

According to the Salt Lake Tribune, this girl also has a 16 month old. So IF she is 18, she first got pregnant, at the very latest, at age 16. And who knows when she was "married", but it could easily been at age 15. And that's if we're to believe the FLDS spokesman, who says she's 18. What a shame, 2 children in 16 months, and she's not even fully grown herself. I'm glad she's getting proper medical care now.

sad

Modesty, this young woman who just gave birth had her modesty and privacy violated when she was forced to have sex with an older man. She was probably terrified and after that it would seem that she might feel safer than she's ever been. The even harder issue would obviously be her facing the loss of her child. Actually, many of these girls who have been pregnant are just children having children. Can you imagine being 13 and facing pregnancy and birth? When I was 13 I was roller skating, and going to camp. These people have been robbed of a precious childhood and probably don't know anything about what a normal human being should feel. As much as I am skeptical about Children's Services, I am thrilled that someone finally stepped in and said enough. I hope the other compounds are scared stiff and are cleaning up their act. Hopefully, they will be placed in safe homes and can discover who they really are. I can guarantee you that they will never get over being raped and used only to produce offspring.

I Man Fraidddd....

Based on FLDS tradition, if her 1st child was a girl, this teenager could be a grandmother by the time she's 29... Just Plain Crazy

CD

Why is everybody talking about this baby being removed from the mother?! Isn't all of the other infants under the age of 12 months with their mothers in foster care?!!

CD formula for this one I bet

Since this one isn't actively breastfeeding I bet they force it to go on formula since he won't be broken of the breast. The state can just give him substandard food from those lovely formula companies.
