... she'd certainly have a spot at the Stadium of Fire if she wanted.

It's all about money.

Duh.
Well | 2:18 a.m. April 29, 2008
I've known alot of teens who have done awhole lot worse unfortunately. But, I just hope she stays grounded and her managers and parents don't put her on the chopping block. There's nothing wrong with being a moral person even though todays society seems to hate it. Also I would say no to Annie, seems it got Miley nothing but embarrassment and apologizing.
uritaata | 5:42 a.m. April 29, 2008
So showing her back is a scandal.
she showed no more than what everyone would see on a sunny day at the beach...
What a word choice and fuss about nothing.

Another Brittney Spears.....

Mark my words.......

I remember when mothers were taking their daughters to see Brittney Spears in Salt Lake.... Then the same mothers were trying to REMOVE Brittney's influence from their daughter's lives.....

Watch and see the same thing happen here!!!!!
re: 1:31 am | 6:10 a.m. April 29, 2008
She is just a kid and is incapable of making sound decisions. Her parents are to blame for this one, particularly her father. I don't see CPS showing up at their door though.

A.) No loving parent should ever let their kids be in the spotlight at such a young age. It has been displayed time and time again that this always ends up badly for the child. Mandy Moore, Britney, Jessica Alba, and countless others.

B.) Her father was at the shoot and took part of it. No sane loving father would EVER allow his daughter to disrobe for a photo shoot no matter how tasteful he thought it was.

I do not doubt her regret, 15 year olds lack the reasoning skills needed to make complex decisions such as these. Apparently her father does too.
James | 7:07 a.m. April 29, 2008
Her handlers know exactly what they're doing. It's all designed for publicity.
The photos are perfectly innocent (in fact, quite beautiful) and shouldn't offend anybody. It's Hollywood, folks, and BYU/concert officials understand the value of a dollar as well as anyone. Relax and enjoy the concert.
Stenar | 7:11 a.m. April 29, 2008
Madonna would never have wanted a spot at Stadium of Fire.
Following the Britney track? | 7:14 a.m. April 29, 2008
There's no doubt now...

ps--Is it true she will not be allowed to perform any Hannah Montana Disney-copyright songs at SOF?
Overreaction | 7:19 a.m. April 29, 2008
Sure the photo doesn't fit her style, but people are overreacting. It wasn't that bad.
uncannygunman | 7:23 a.m. April 29, 2008
It is ludicrous to say that this girl is not already being marketed as a sex symbol, albeit a very soft-core one. The photo accompanying this story isn't exactly modest. So what's got people riled up now, the "artsiness" of the new photos?
Miley fan | 7:31 a.m. April 29, 2008
Miley, what can I say? Pick your path carefully. There are plenty of folks out there ready to take advantage of you. Good luck girl!
jtm | 7:39 a.m. April 29, 2008
Lighten up are you really that shocked, MC is a long way from Madonna. Lets all overreact, the world is coming to an end.
Disappointed | 7:45 a.m. April 29, 2008
Artsy? I've heard that excuse before for soft-porn. Interesting what is considered acceptable for a 15 year old to do in America today. Used to be, that would be considered child pornography--I don't think the fact that it's Vanity Fair rather than Playboy makes that much difference.
Also used to be that a parent who attended such a photo shoot with their "child" (she's only 15, after all, and that's a child, right?) would have been considered to be contributing to the child pornography, and possibly could have been arrested.
Of course, we all know that celebrities are different, but I certainly am disapoointed in both Miley and her parents.
wbm5 | 7:49 a.m. April 29, 2008
anyone want to give up there tickets? jk. I don't waste my time, money or energy. Plus who wants to be surrounded by a stadium of
Screaming Pre-teenage girls. Maybe the FLDS men? Bad joke.
Stadium of Fire | 7:50 a.m. April 29, 2008
It shows that sex does sell. Even it's a 15 year old.
Ernest T. Bass | 8:01 a.m. April 29, 2008
The fact that this is even a possibility shows how truly strange Provo is.
It was a shoulder for crying out loud.
lost in DC | 8:16 a.m. April 29, 2008
If Miley doesn't think she can say no to Anne, who is the next lech around the corner willing to take advantage of her that she will think she cannot say no to? You can always say no and should often do so.
Grief | 8:22 a.m. April 29, 2008
I am disappointed that they didn't give Miley her walking papers at the Stadium of Fire. They should cancel her. Those around her knew all too well, what they were doing. You can say "no" to pictures like that, and saying they were embarrassed by the pictures is like saying you would be embarrassed after mooning the press in a public place. If Miley wants to maintain a clean reputation and an innocent persona, this is not the way to do it. She now has a choice, will she follow in the Brittany Spears pathway, or will she learn from this and try in the future to avoid this kind of thing?
Professor | 8:44 a.m. April 29, 2008
It is all about money. By taking this stand, the Freedom festival has become a glorification of a 15 year old millionaire rock/soft porn star who is has no consequences for her actions.

The leaders of the festival will all be up at the pulpit Sunday preaching against this type of thing. Unfortunately they don't have the moral courage to do the right thing in their own personal lives. They know freedom requires consequence, but no consequence at this Freedom Festival.

This has also become a glorification of those who sexually abuse minor children. Miley is a minor child. It is illegal for an adult to sexually exploit a minor child. (Texas is trying to send us a message on this issue.) Unfortunately no one in our culture has the courage to step up and hold those who sexually abused Miley accountable.

Utah culture seems to have slid into a decadent moral abyss. When the fireworks reach their orgasmic climax on July 4th, I hope someone sheds a tear for the Festivals loss of virtue and the children who were taught fame and wealth atones for bad choices.

Mandy Moore? She left the entertainment world and is not a "train wreck". That being said... I have never encouraged my daughter to look to these teen idols. They are not what I want my daughter to look up to. I try to teach her to be true to herself and do her very best and she will have happiness and success. I don't buy her magazines about teen obcessions and we turned off our cable TV. We only watch DVD's now and that is becomming a rare event in our family. This world is becoming wacked out and I am trying to keep my kids from comparing themselves to it. They are so much happier not having that garbage in our home!

Try it!
Alex | 8:55 a.m. April 29, 2008
How did Mandy Moore end up bad?
Anonymous | 9:09 a.m. April 29, 2008
where was Billy Ray? Why wasn't he protecting his little girl?
The Joker | 9:34 a.m. April 29, 2008
What's the big deal with another naked underage girl in the heart of Zion??? Maybe she can become another of Brother Warren's wives.
Value added | 9:34 a.m. April 29, 2008
The resale value of these tickets should sky rocket after this successful ploy to expose Ms. Montana to a wider age demographic.

James correctly states, its all about money.
Lee | 9:36 a.m. April 29, 2008
There are other photos that were not published. And they were a lot more revealing. This girl is looked up to by our children., especially our daughters!$$$ is right on this! The "Brittany Effect"is bound to take place.
It's the Money | 9:37 a.m. April 29, 2008
Appears that BYU may be a little hypocritical in that it can deny Rodan's Kiss as being vulgar and impressionable children, including College students, will suffer. How much $ would the campus lose if this were really made a "stay the course"
Stymie | 9:45 a.m. April 29, 2008
Who's Miley Cyrus? Is she another one of those cookie cutout celebrities that you see for a year or so, then disappears when the public moves onto someone new because of short attention span?
skichuck | 9:48 a.m. April 29, 2008
I would be surprised if she doesn't turn out to be the next Brittany Spears. It's not what the photo showed, or the amount of skin, it's the way it was done. It's pure publicity intended to keep her in the limelight. As they say, sex sells. And from what the article said, people have been buying. The older she gets the sexier Hollywood will want her to be. Her parents should be strung up for doing this to her.
JCS | 9:51 a.m. April 29, 2008
Of course, she liked the photo until a lot of people spoke up against it. And, because of the controversy, a lot more magazines will be sold than would have been before and more concert tickets, her dad will have another 15 minutes of fame and etc. After all, the almighty dollar is at work there.
WBM5 | 9:53 a.m. April 29, 2008
Doesn't look like art to me. looks trampy. My 15 year old daughter saw this coming months ago. She said Miley will be the next one. I asked her why she said that. She said. "look at how she is dressing already" Just wait and see. Was this a test to see how people would react? Don't doubt it.
Anonymous | 10:01 a.m. April 29, 2008
I dont know if she lds or not but it sure look lke she not. are you selling you sole for money.
Skeptic | 10:07 a.m. April 29, 2008
I wonder how many of you have seen the photo in question. It shows her bare back, a lot like swimming suits. It might be suggestive (I think that is a viewer issue as much as subject issue) but to call it pornographic shows little understanding.
MEB | 10:18 a.m. April 29, 2008
I can't believe some contributors to this comment line can't see where this one crossed the line. Posing a 15 year old girl in a photo shoot like that was irresponsible at best. More accurately, Vanity Fair officials should be arrested and charged with child porn. Tell me a child molestor wouldn't get a charge out of these photos and I'll tell you that you're either in denial or very naive.

This is sexual exploitation of a minor in every sense of the word. If anyone had any guts they would charge Vanity Fair with the appropriate offense and send a message here.

Strange that this situation is coinciding with the whole FLDS fiasco. On the one hand, we want to protect 15 year olds from old men in Texas, and on the other, we want to take tittilating pictures of them to distribute to old men. Strange world we live in.
thisweek | 10:23 a.m. April 29, 2008
How would you turn out if you had a billion dollars when you were 14?

Leave the kids alone...judge not
Where was Billy Ray? | 10:29 a.m. April 29, 2008
Where was billy Ray? Look at the photo he took with her on vanityvair.com. If I saw any father laying like that with his teenage daughter would call the authorities. It is very inappropriate.
Bozo | 10:39 a.m. April 29, 2008
I was hoping they would cancel her and all those suckers paying $1000 for scalped tickets would take a beating...
miss jen | 10:47 a.m. April 29, 2008
I knew the Hannah Montana thing was too good to be true. It' s just that my 8 and 10 year olds (both girls) think she's funny and talented and cute. So now I get to have a 'we don't take our clothes off to take pictures' discussion with them? It's isn't about the pictures, it's about her 'tween' fan base and the exploitation of yet another child star. What is the deal??? Do we not ever learn a lesson? The producer/manager/parents or us: The fans? The road to fame is a slippery slope, if she is doing this at 15 what will she be doing at 18? 21? 26? I think we all know the answer and yet here we are writing, talking and reading about it. Sex does sell, even to mormon moms in provo utah...since we're contributing to the attention it's getting.
Anonymous | 10:52 a.m. April 29, 2008
She already has a billion dollars, what more does she need? And embarrassed about the pictures, what a line. I have no morals would have been a more approriate response, and neither do my parents. I hope the freedom festival will offer to buy back tickets for those who were naive enough to beleive that she was a sweaky clean performer good for their kids. How could they have even known that this could happen to her eventually. I mean she has fine upstanding CELEBRITY parents. I am not a fanatic about it. I will let my kids watch Hanna Montana on Saturday morning. But I teach by example and by word that celebrities are not roles models.
Observation | 11:12 a.m. April 29, 2008
A month ago I was at my dentist's and we were talking about teenage roll models and decided Brittany had ended her career as such, and I commented that there was always Hannah Montana and we agreed. Now this. Miley is a cute girl note the word "girl". She is 15 years old, and yes it is a beautiful photo, and you don't see any more skin than you do in a bathing suit. But she isn't at the beach in a bathing suit. She's wrapped in a sheet, with in my opinion, a very provocative look over her shoulder, and looks like a child. I know children have to be accompanied by a guardian on any shoots, movie sets, etc., so where was Billy Ray on this? I would never have let my daughter pose like this, and I have two beautiful daughters who would give Miley a run for her money. I'm just not a famous person who can streamline my kids into show business.
Please explain | 11:20 a.m. April 29, 2008
Can those who feel the picture is so bad please explain why? I don't understand how this is any worse than what you'd see at the local swimming pool, even if it's a one piece. Get over it! I'm with the person who posted earlier...judge not! Word to the parents who are looking for a good role model for their kids...don't look to Hollywood. Especially if you blow this out of proportion, there will always be something to be shoked about in Hollywood.
Jeffrey | 11:43 a.m. April 29, 2008
Oh good grief people. this is an example of exactly what's wrong with the prudish attitude of America. She revealed nothing more than anything you'd see at the beach, or heck, in the typical shopping mall.

And to suggest that her dad was exploiting her? You want to talk exploitation how about focusing some attention on how many Utah mothers dress their little girls in skanky outfits and encourage physical shallowness.

I suspect the people outraged by this are the same people who lobby to have classic art - like the David statue - banned from public display.

This is a non-scandal that has been turned into a scandal by the media and by the religious prudes who obviously have such a self-loathing for the human body.

Grow up.
Stadium of Fire | 11:50 a.m. April 29, 2008
There is a small (actually rather long) contract in place, that is why they cant cancel the show, and if Brad Pello the Exec. Producer tried it would probably bankrupt the freedom festival.

This is this weeks news... it will blow over in no time, pretty soon, someone else will be in rehab, someone else will flash the crowd with their "joy" and this will all be forgotten.
WHAT? | 12:24 p.m. April 29, 2008
Saturday I was out to dinner with some friends and it was prom night. Some of the young girls had less clothes on and revealed much more than what Miley was showing. Why is everyone focusing on Provo women and what the residents living there should expect of their daughters dress and role models. Shouldn't all parents, anywhere you live, want their girls to learn from others mistakes and try our hardest to teach them to be themselves. Miley can be a fun, young, teen-bopper who does make mistakes because they don't happen to live the way you feel she should. Get over judging. If more time was spent teaching your own children and helping them discover themselves and what they will accomplish in their lives and a little less time worrying about whether or night "Hannah Montana" showed herself in a sheet, than situations like this would become a lot less shocking to these little girls who look up to her because they wouldn't care. They are secure with themselves.
Otay | 12:58 p.m. April 29, 2008
Anyone who has time to worry about Miley Cyrus, or whatever her face is, has too much time and their hands, and their priorities as to what's important are all messed up.
Crazy! | 1:10 p.m. April 29, 2008
Parts of the article gave reasons why behavior--which Miley herself apologized for--is not only accepted for Hollywood stars, but to be expected. Likening her to a butterfly coming out of her cocoon and such. Give me a break. Even Miley is "embarrassed" at these images for what they really are--inappropriate. Say it like it is. Artistic doesn't have to be sex wrapped in a bed sheet. And Miley's pictures on the side were also inappropriate for that matter, which I'm glad to learn is the same word she denounced herself with for those, too. If this girl really wants to impress, buck the trend. Where are Britney Spears' followers now?

Miley's image (good and moral) got her where she's at. The truth is she doesn't have to change that for an older audience. If she stays true to her audience, and her audience stays true to themselves, both her and her audience will grow together. Then she'll have an older audience. No one has to get older quicker, and no one should think growing up requires less morals.
TheMadNuker | 1:23 p.m. April 29, 2008
The word you are searching for is, "Prostitution"
Sorry For Some | 1:28 p.m. April 29, 2008
To those who say this is no big deal, and we are being judgmental and prudish - let me explain:

A role model to millions of girls poses in a sheet without anything underneath it (or is made to look so), pulls down her shirt to expose some of her bra, slumps across a boy with her midriff very exposed.

What messages does this teach girls regarding:

Modesty?

Chastity?

Character?

Sexuality (and age)?

Ponder this: why do advertisers spend billions of dollars if media images (supposedly) have no influence, as you seem to infer? On the other hand, maybe you realize the medias influence (i.e. you've read the research), therefore indicating that your actual position is that you have no problem with - or actually espouse - these messages.

Just so you know, whether by ignorance or by tacit approval, you are supporting the sexualization of girls and the accompanying degradation of morals, character and true self-esteem that accompany it. Just so you know.
Steve - Yes "Artsy" | 1:31 p.m. April 29, 2008
Was it the best photo in the world? I'd say no. But "artsy" or artistic? Yes. Far too many people seem ashamed of the human body. And for those who think of this as child pornography need to learn what the real definition of that is or how something needs to be in order for it to reach that level. Simple nudity done by a professional photographer is considered art... thus why the photo art books by the likes of David Hamilton, Sally Mann, and Jock Sturges are legal (even though if many of you here in Utah browsed through them you'd probably have a meltdown).

But as for the show on July 4th, yes it should still go on of course. Why shouldn't it? For now Miley and her show is still the family friendly event it's known to be... what she chooses to do outside of it on her time is a seperate thing. But as for Miley on the long term... did any of you honestly think she'd stay all goody-goody and Disneyfied for her whole career? In the next few years she'll need to start appealing to adults in order to sustain herself.
J.J | 1:40 p.m. April 29, 2008
To Jeffery, Amen!!!!
Anonymous | 2:19 p.m. April 29, 2008
are you kidding? have you seen the pictures? They are not that bad and the article clearly states that she was clothed under the sheets. In addition, I bet that 98 percent of you who are complaining about this will still let your kids watch the next high school musical movie that comes out. Vanessa Hudgens posed completely nude. Did you know that?
