Why not just say "Woman"?
We would do well to have someone as energetic and determined as Luz as Senate Minority Leader. I think she will work well with her Republican colleagues, while standing firm for Democratic values and representing her constituents well.
Most of all utah needs to get the mormon church out of politics or repeal its tax free status.
Duh Bernick. Leadership in the minority is not a "high Senate post". It's a low senate post. I'd rather be a freshman republican than in democratic leadership in the legislature.
Waddoups still has a strong Republican opponent in Ronda Rose who could beat him in convention or in a primary. That would leave a two woman race in Senate District 6. How refreshing would that be?
Rita, Thanks for letting me know I'm not the only one who believes that.
Women in politics are still a novelty, and treated quite differently from men. They are expected to look attractive and condemned if they don't. Can you imagine a woman with the girth, ears and general scruffiness of Charles Clarke hacking it in the Congress? Nobody pays much attention to male politicians' appearance, but their female colleagues are judged (often spitefully) by hair, suits and cleavage, long before brains, competence and judgment.
I will grant you that women still have a tougher road to climb in politics that is hardly unique from any other arena in life.
However, there are many successful female legislators in the Utah legislature and I guarantee you looks has nothing to do with it. The most attractive female legislator is probably the least effective.
Bernick is Sen. Pat Jones' foil! After reading this article it's clear that Bob Bernick is nothing more than Sen. Pat Jones' foil to promote her climb in Minority Leadership. What a shameful plug! Sen. Gene Davis better watch his back, the knives are flying!
I think it's curious that out of eight Democrats you have four announced candidates for leader. Why is there that many people bound and determined to get a job that is like being the captain on the Titanic?
