Great deal for Brian. To head off to a program that proves it on the field,
rather than the whinny also ran's at New England, is a snapshot of
Kehl's college career too, playing for a team that kept their mouths shut
and just won on the field.

Bryan Kehl is not only a very talented athlete, he is one of the nicest
individuals you could ever meet. Having known Bryan since childhood, I know
that he will be a role model that our youth can emulate. Bryan is honest, kind,
generous and diligent. His parents have done a great job. No matter how
successful Bryan becomes, it will never go to his head. The sports world needs
more people like Bryan. I wish him all the best. New York, you are getting
more than a great football player. His contribution to your team will be far
greater than you can imagine!

When a sentence starts with "No disrespect to Detroit, but...", it is
a guarantee that what is to follow IS disrespect for Detroit. I do not fault
Kehl at all for preferring the Giants to the Lions, but he should have kept that
comment to himself. Now when Detroit fans hear the name Brian Kehl, they will
remember him as the BYU guy who dissed Detroit, whether he intended to or not.
If you have to qualify your remarks with a disclaimer, it's a good sign
that you shouldn't say it. "Don't take this the wrong way,
but..."; "I don't mean to offend you, but..."; "With
all due respect..."; "No disrespect to (insert name), but...",
are all disclaimers that we hope will soften the blow of something insulting or
rude we want to say. Even if what we say is true, as Kehl's comments were,
some things should just not be stated publicly. He should have said he was
thrilled to go to the Giants and gracefully said he had no comment about not
being taken by Detroit in the 3rd round. Just because the media asks
doesn't mean you have to answer with foot in mouth.

Detroit should move their franchise to somewhere else. they are a pathetic
franchise...the Packers, Bears and Vikings will also tell you that. Detroit has
had some of the best talent over the years including Scott Mitchell from Utah
and Detmer from BYU as QBs and Barry Sanders at RB (who up and quit b/c the
franchise was so bad) and still the Lions couldn't do anything with that
talent. So Kehl has nothing to worry about. he meant no harm. the opening of the
article made it clear Kehl wanted to go to a WINNING franchise and his comment
was only supportive and telling the truth of that fact. the Giants are a winning
organization and the Lions are not. get used to it MoTown Mickey.

Kehl is a good kid. I know his brother well, and met Bryan a couple of years
ago. Good character. But he was naive when he took the bait by a reporter and
insulted Detroit. The best move is to diplomatically say how glad he is to get
drafted, happy to have a chance to prove himself with the Giants, and promise to
work harder than he ever has in his life. That sells well anywhere. And if
someone asks, "how do you feel about being passed over in the early rounds
by xxx," you simply say something like, "a lot of good athletes never
get drafted, so I'm glad I got drafted anywhere." End of story. You
don't make yourself a target, and you stay consistent with the good
character you have.

Bryan is a class act. he doesnt disrespect anyone. just because your detroit
team is terrible doesnt mean you have to go looking for someone to take it out

I am life long Giants fan and a U of U grad/fan. Now I must cheer for a zoobie
to do well (painful). That being said, I hope he will be a strong addition on
and off the field. The last great BYU player for the Giants was Bart Oats, and
he was a star player and an even better example off the field. Kehl has some big
shoes to fill. The G-men fans demand stong plays on D. To me, he is no longer a
zoobie, he is part of The Big Blue D.

Nice to see some class from a U fan. I'm a huge Y fan and I admit, I cheer
for the 49ers because of Alex Smith. I want him to lead that franchise to
success, much like Steve Young did. Once these guys are out of college, it
becomes more of a representation of the state or conference anyway. I'm
thrilled that Urlacher is doing so well because that reflects on the MWC.
I'm glad Steve Smith is doing well, too. Maybe these o-line picks in Miami
will allow Beck to show his stuff.

player drafted, let alone the others are not even mentioned. You people wonder
why a huge percentage of readers can't stand your biased ways. For

The D-News coverage of local players taken in the NFL draft was interesting, to
say the least. You had plenty of articles over the weekend about local players
and the draft, including personal "draft diaries" of Kehl, and Steve
Tate, who wasn't even drafted. I can see why the D-News would be inclined,
at least in part, to give those players press time, as they have never been the
type to shy away from the microphone or a reporter in the past. Kehl's
boasting about being taken in the third round was typical. But why not provide
some coverage about the three other local players taken in the draft, including
the first player taken, Shawn Murphy of Utah State? We don't know much
about the guy, except for his blood line and the fact he did not start early
playing football. But I am sure his rise makes for interesting reading.
Can't you find him? Let Kehl go on his way without another word, and
let's read something about Murphy!

Lawrence Taylor? not quite. But he will be a solid performer and a welcome
addition to an already tough NY defense. I'm a U of U and New York fan and
the Giants just got a 4th round steal!

I do not understand the negativity of so many fans. Definitely root for your
team. I am a huge BYU fan. But that does not require you do disrespect other
teams. My bet is if you got to know the players of any opposing team you would
find much to like and admire. Utah has had some terrific teams and is one of the
most successful bowl teams in history. Their success reflects on the entire
conference. Likewise BYU's recent success has shown that the conference
teams can play with anyone. Utah State has had some difficulty recently. But,
that won't last. I have seen Utah State beat both in state teams. During
the games we should be rabid fans; afterward we should be gracious and
complementary. Obnoxious and demeaning comments reflect more on the speaker than
on his target.

Aggie football isn't even better than Notre Dame football last year... I
think its great they got some players going into the NFL but to make a blanket
statement saying a team that can't beat Idaho state is better than either
BYU or Utah is a little silly....

I think when Kehl said his "No disrespect intended..." line he was
mostly referring to the linebacker situation being better in New York, not a
specific diss on Detroit as a team. He's saying it's better to go in
the 4th round to a great linebacker situation (since NY lost two LBs to free
agency). Of course, it's also great to go to a Super Bowl champion.

Shawn Murphy? I live in Logan and haven't even heard of him. When your
program is last in the nation, it's hard to have a lot to say about the
players. But perhaps he's another Cooley just waiting to happen, right?

If you live in Logan and haven't heard of Shawn Murphy, then I am fairly
certain you are not a sports fan. Obviously, linemen never get a lot of respect(
that comes with the territory) but most fans that actually support their local
teams usually know the names of the players in good and bad years.

Utah State NEVER played Idaho State last year! You look like an idiot making statements that aren't true! Idaho State isn't even 1-A football. But I guess BYU fans know all about 1-AA teams! At least we don't need to play 1-AA teams to get a "W". I'd rather have 2 wins against 1-A teams than a "W" against 1-AA teams.

I think that statement right there says it all. Play football against competitive teams and get players that get drafted in the NFL. That's the way the Aggies role.

Good job Kehl! Congrats on the draft. I am VERY glad that he didn't go to
Detroit, that team has been a mess for 30+ years. Don't worry, the Lions
have far more problems to worry about that what a 4th rounder said about their

If it weren't bad enough to only win 3 games in the last two seasons (in a conference that only has 2 decent teams no less), I've also got to deal with "idiot" Aggies talking about how getting killed by BSU, Hawaii, and Oklahoma (I was in Norman for that game) last year somehow entitles us to be recognized for something positive.
It's not just about who you schedule - it's who you beat. And only Cache Valley is delusional enough to think that it's better to get blown out by "ranked" teams than to win games against teams like UCLA, Arizona, Louisville, TCU, New Mexico, Utah. (Who cares if there's an Eastern Washington or Northern Arizona scheduled)?
Oh, and if we're going to throw down the I-AA card, we should probably make mention of 2000 and 2001 when we played 4 I-AA teams in 2 years. That's right, Kevin Curtis ('01) and Chris Cooley ('00 & '01) were racking up stats against the powerful Idaho State, Weber State, and SUU.

Well if i recall right, Utah beat utah state 34-18. Another thing is that the
aggies lost to unlv, wyoming, and utah and byu beat all those teams. Your
argument is pathetic when Utah State is playing so bad. And in case there is any
questions, over time utah vs utah state is a whopping 71-29-4 as of 2004 while
the cougars also lead the series 40-33. This brings us to a total of 111 wins
for the two teams compared to the 62 for Utah state almost double so I think you
had better recheck your math.

Wow that's a shocker that any NFL team would even look at USU for players
considering their awful record every year. I guess the NFL is hoping to find
another Kevin Curtis caliber player based on the theory that even a blind

Go Cougs, Go Utes, Go Aggies. Really the only time we should root against a
Utah school is when we play them. For Utah and BYU to have any possibility to
move up in conferences they need to both be successful in order to be a package
deal. As far as Utah State, they got shafted by the WAC way back when,
otherwise they would be better. Increased success by the instate schools make
the rivalries far more exciting. I loved it when UT went undefeated and this is
coming from a blue blooded BYU guy. Yes, some schools are more successful than
others and usually it simply has to do with available resources, nothing else.

Since people want to rag on BYU for scheduling I-AA teams, let me say something about that. You have to deal with people backing out on you etc., so if you have to schedule these teams, at least BYU schedules dang good ones. In 2004, they had Eastern Illinois, who swept their conference. In 2007, they had E. Washington, who went 9-4 and barely lost to eventual champion App. State in the playoffs. (ASU plays at LSU this year) This year, they have N. Iowa, who went 12-1 last year and made a run in the playoffs.
Find me one team in the nation who also has scheduled these lower divisions who has scheduled better anywhere. You won't find it in the SEC nor Big 10. Everyone knows how the SEC schedules OOC.

Anyone who ridicules BYU for playing good 1-AA teams needs to get a life. The
bigger embarrassment is BYU electively playing USU. It is a financial loss for
BYU and can only lower their power rating.

just nicely and has the potential to do even more off season as well. I'd
give him two years before an ad agency gets him on a billboard in Times Square.
