Says it all

"But once they get the check and see something they want, they'll spend it."

tsk, tsk, tsk.... then they will wonder why they are still broke and owe, owe, owe.....

but... the FEDS will bail them out.. for their vote.

Liberal larry

How I long for the days of Bill Clinton, when we were at peace, and we had a budget surplus.

Good Attempt

These rebates are a nice attempt to create some positives in an otherwise negative economy. It won't resolve a lot and we all pay the price of inflation. I'm not going to complain though since I expect to receive $1500. I believe we truly need less consumerism and higher productivity so we are more competitive in relation to the rest of the world.

Peace?

Peace? With Bill Clinton at the helm? As if the president alone had such power. If he did, why didn't we have universal health care implemented at that time? He and Hillary supported it? Must have been more involved in our government that just the president.

And peace? With the president guilty of having sex with a worker, while married to Hillary? That's not the kind of peace I'm looking for. I want to respect my president for his moral behavior and example to the citizens.

Of course we are headed for a depression and the wise folks will remember that when spending their rebate check. God bless us all.

Taylor

The budget surplus had nothing to do with Clinton. People give credit to the president for things he had no control over or even any influence at all in.

To: Liberal Larry

Don't forget that these stimulus checks, using borrowed money, are being brought to you by the Democrats. Also, the Democrats, wanted to make sure everyone, even those that: did not file taxes, do not pay taxes & those that are illegal aliens, got a check.

Sorry to burst your bubble, (since all bubbles are bursting nowdays), Pres. Clintons budget surplus was done through some very "Enronian" accounting practices.

Any help/money that comes from the Government should be looked at very carefully, one hand giving you money, their other hand taking from your wallet.

All politicians, Republicans, Democrats & Etc., only have their interests at heart.

AIMHO

Sandy amazed

Liberal Larry do you also yearn for the attacks on the US that came as the result of the Clinton Administration "head in the sand" approach to the world.

Re: Taylor

And they willingly criticize the president for things over which he had no control. But we certainly can't expect anyone to actually understand how things work in Washington, can we now?

Davis County

I would if poll results would be the same in Davis County where there are more young families? Everyone I know is taking a family vacation with it this summer.

Stymie

Republicans obviously believe that they can buy votes for the next presidential election, and/or solve the serious economic problems that they created, by throwing some money out there to the little people. Won't happen. Bye, bye Greedy Old Party(GOP).

Bill Clinton

Nothing gets Utahns more frenzied than saying the name Bill Clinton!

Bill Clinton........Bill Clinton.........

MoJules

Spent mine, and proud of it, but it is not taking away from our finances, because we are not in dept and we save money. It is so nice to be able to use that money for the reason it is given, but the only way to do that, is to stop emotional buying and quit running up credit cards. If people would stop using credit cards and only paying the amount owed and not more, they would have more than $600.00 each a year from saved interest.

Observer

Reading this thread I find it entertaining that Republicans were, and are, oh so ready to blame Clinton for the failures of his administration, and even blame him for failures of the Bush administration. Yet, at the same time, they consistently give Bush a walk when it comes to the poor economy, war in Iraq, huge trade and budget deficits, Katrina, etc. Their response is always the same......."Clinton did it"......"Bush is not responsible because the President has no control". Quite the double standard, and quite funny.

A Miracle

I think, even sliding towards a possible recession, that it is a miracle the economy and country is in as good of a condition as it is. Considering the following: Homes way over valued, too many people getting loans for homes they have no business getting, banks over-reaching (understatement) in doling out loans they had no business loaning out, billions spent every year on a war, too many citizens saddled with over-spending and debt, too many citizens with no savings, the continual cry from the majority of populace for the government to bail us out of everything, Hurricane Katrina, . . . now imagine what status the economy would have if all of these stupid things hadn't happened. Imagine what would have happened if millions didn't go to New Orleans for their own improper planning. No one is bailing out other states to that extend and still demanding more. Wake up people, as bad as it seems, we are fortunate to still be as well off but we better pull our heads out and start to save more than we spend, get our budgets in line and get out of debt!

No secret as to where MY check will go: petrol

Diantha

Amen to MoJules. We Americans have brought a lot of our problems on our own. I use a credit card but I pay it off every month. It even earns me money. If you want it but don't have the money for it, save up until you do. Piece of cake.

Bribes and Debt

How can it be legal for the republican lawmakers to issue these vote bribes? And during the second presidential election cycle in a row. Is this really a good idea, with the huge deficit the tax-cut-for-the-rich-and-spend republicans have built up over the past seven years?

Since China and Japan fund around one-third of our national debt, about a third of those checks you receive are from these two countries. How does that feel? And how can that be a good idea?

Not even

It won't pay my whole petrol bill for a year, but it will help a bit. I think I did my duty for the economy. Bought a new car, remodeled a room, and am still not in debt.

YouGoFirst

To "Bribes and Debt @11:45" it is leagal for republican lawmakers to issue these vote bribes becasue the DEMOCRAT's wanted it that way.

I don't disagree that the rebates are a bad idea, but the republican idea was made worse by the democrats.

RE: YouGoFirst

How right you are. The Republicans only wanted to give rebates to those who actually paid taxes (what a novel idea). However, the Democrats made sure that even those who have never paid a dime in taxes (such as those one welfare) get a tax HANDOUT (notice I didn't call it a rebate). This little trick alone cost us several billion dollars.
