They've got a interesting population of kids there at Dixon. It is almost like two different worlds. Anything they can do to encourage good behavior will get my vote. This sounds like a step in the right direction to me.

In the real world and you don't feel good, wearing that grungy look reflects on your work performance. That shows a complete lack of professionalism, and could cause a raise to be missed.

I dont get it. Where is Dixon middle? When I thought I read this article you made a typo and meant to put Dixie Middle.

The dateline SAYS Provo. Anyone who has ever lived in Provo or Utah County would know where it is. The name comes from a now-long forgotten mayor of the city. As a graduate of said school (1969), I was intrigued and clicked on the story. They look like nice kids, regardless of what they wear.

I am all for School Uniforms. Your crime rate in a school will drop 60 to 70% just by implementing the uniform. Thats reason enough right there to go to the uniform. As parents we forget why our kids are in school. They are there to get an education and to be better then we are and if wearing a certain standard of clothing will help them achieve that, then we should all be for it.

As a teacher, I am neither for or against this issue. I don't understand what is wrong with jeans since almost everyone wears them. They are not gang affiliated. I can see the need though on other items such as short skirts or ripped pants and shorts. Forcing children to look certain ways though is not a great thing to do either. Kids need to be able to express themselves and be able to expand their mind rather than just for forced to all be the same. There needs to be a happy middle ground I think.

It's clear that parents like Jennifer Olivas will shrink to the whining of their children and vote "no" on improving the environment of the school through more appropriate attire for their kids. It's laughable to claim that the kids won't be voting - OK, maybe not directly.

My kids attend a school that instituted a dress code, and guess what. They are free to express themselves and expand their minds. They just don't look trashy doing it.

Oh, and Austin, wear what YOU want on YOUR own time.

Dixon Middle School, according to the story, is 750 W. 200 North, Provo.

Teacher

As a teacher I have seen way too much of student underclothing, breasts, bellies, and booties.

If you have any doubt about what I say please take a walk through at Dixon or Provo Hi.

Mokie, since you are a school teacher, I hope that you are more educated than you sound. You said that levis are not gang related. Not true. Not saying that if you wear levis, you are a gang member, but they do choose the kind, brand, and cut of levi that they wear. When was the last time you saw a member of the SUR 13, Bloods, or SS Crips wearing a pair of Wranglers? Probably never and you probably never will. Truth is, they are in school to get an education. Not walk a run-way for all their friends. If they put half of the effort in to their school work that they do in trying to "look good" for their peers, we wouldnt even be having this be an issue. Just the fact that the school is looking to go to a uniform is proof enough that there is a problem. Principals are way too busy to try to fight a battle such as school uniforms. They have to deal with more demanding crap like "NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND."

Yea for Mrs. Arnold! A parent who cares. If I were to send my child on an L.D.S. mission, I would provide the clothing needed. Same if I were to send them off to college. When I go to a place of business, I expect to see people dressed to fit the job. Why would we as parents and community expect anything less from our children? Middle School is hard enough, it would be nice to help take some of the pressure off of the kids. These are the years that will determine what your child will be like in High School. Maybe a dress code would would give all of the students a needed social break. Let their true strengths show. Let their "minds do the talking". Dixon is a great school with a lot of great people. I think we should let our youth know that they are worth it. Everyday should be "Dress for sucess day"! I'm sad to see a child wearing sweats to school, unless it was P.J day. Everyone spends their $ differently. Put your $ where your mouth is. Give it a try. They might just like the way they feel about themselves!

?
