Does this mean that I can register my uncle that escaped from Mexico as a partner so that my employer has to give him some or any of the benefits my employers gives me? Such as discounts in store purchases offered to family members? Can my live in uncle also be eligible for welfare and free medical care too now that he is a new partner? Love this Utah government, it's so backwards and disgusting. So many wrongs in the laws of Utah it's no wonder we Utahn's are treated with contempt by the rest of the world.
If Utah is "treated with contempt by the rest of the world" it is due to our over-conservative views, not our moderate or liberal ones. It is the water-downed beer, the theocracy, etc... that makes people call us all "Utards."
Don't try and be clever. These people just want the same rights as everyone else, including the right to choose their own life partner. If you really want to commit yourself to your uncle, go ahead. Its not hurting anyone else.
Bob G - get a life! If you want to be homophobic, don't hold back, tell us how you really feel.
I think the Registry says a lot - and in a positive way - that the people of Salt Lake City care about families, and all people who are just trying to live their lives.
This Registry helps both gay and staight couples, and shows to the world that the stereotype of Salt Lake City as a city of narrow minded religious nuts is just not true.
Bravo Salt Lake City!
Family benefits were originally intended to help husband-wife couples raise children. It is enourmously expensive to raise children but society has a vital interest in seeing that it is done so breadwinners received benefits to help defray the huge out of pocket and indirect cost.
The nice lady in the article noted that the registry is "a baby step in the right direction"; that is, to extending all the benefits given husband-wife couples to anyone and everyone who cohabitates (oh no! the "homosexual agenda" that dare not be mentioned rears it's head)
Two able bodied wage earners are free to chose a lifestyle that revovles around not having children but it is difficult to see where society has an interest in financially subsiding it.
Every public or employer benefit dollar that goes to allready well off "two income no kids" households is a dollar that can't help a "one income three kids" family sacrificing to keep the species around for another generation.
Children are already the most impovershished segment of society. Funneling more public resources from the most needy and helpless to the well-off to stroke the PC crowd seems perverse.
the downward slope just got more slippery
"A lifestyle that revovles around not having children"
??
A very good friend and coworker of mine is gay. He has been trying to adopt for years with his partner. You would not believe the hoops they have had to jump through! Do not even say that they are trying to coast through life without children. True, some are, but so are some hetero couples.
You know what's so fantastic about this registry? It doesn't make anyone do anything. It's just a list that employers can use if they wish to offer a more flexible benefits package to their employees. Other managers and business owners may ignore this list. Nothing is imposed upon anyone, least of all you folks out in Sandy, Lehi, Layton or anywhere else beyond the limits of SLC.
So this registry helps businesses, doesn't expand the power of the government, and shrinks the amount of legal red tape by reducing the need for contracts. How can a true conservative not approve of this?
I'm glad they're jumping thru hoops, sorry they are even being considered. What kind of role models will they be for the most important aspect of human identity? What chance will children they raise have to develop healthy gender identity? Texas FLDS shows that if you indoctrinate children from birth you can make them believe anything is "healthy" and "normal".
The defining characteristic of homosexuality is sex without procreation. Your friends want to have it both ways and that never works in life.
What business is it of the SLC govt to define relationships or set criterea for them or make up new PC names for relationships?
If employers want to give benefits why do they have do fall in with a city government definition?
Salt Lake liberals are so pathetically insecure and desperate to be considered "enlightened" by your San Francisco / New York types that they create this caricature and then pat themselves on the back.
Who says that homosexuals will indoctrinate their adopted (or even biological) children to be homosexual? They teach being true to your own identity. Just as they do not wish to be indoctrinated as straight, they would not wish to impose their homosexuality on others.
eh. Live and let live.
Please, for the last time. The registry doesn't subsidize anything. It doesn't give any money to gays, it doesn't require employers to do a thing.
Gay people have been subsidizing the heterosexual lifestyle for as long as child tax credits have been in existence. But don't worry; heterosexuals are not about to lose all their special rights.
THANK YOU!!! Another person who can see the truth and double standards!! Amen! Amen! and AMEN!!!
Commenters disclaimer: I am not, do not, will not support polygamy!
Here is a way that polygamists can get around the system.
Have the wives pick a partner, get registered, the man marries one of them & they are all linked ... Done!
Let me get this straight, (pun intended), we will accept homosexual lifestyles, which is not based on having children but will adopt, over polygamist lifestyles, which is based on having children.
Then we hear that one will indoctrinate the chidren into a wrong lifestyle & the other will not!????
AIMHO
Call it what you will; children learn more from watching what their parents DO than what they say.
"The defining characteristic of homosexuality is sex without procreation.'
Huh???
So the defining characteristic of heterosexuality is sex with procreation? Is there nothing more? Love? Commitment? Companionship? Mutual respect & support?
It's really all just about making babies?
Of course not. Plenty of straight couples can't have or choose not to have babies, and some of them even want to live together without benefit of a formal marriage. Shall we make second class citizens of them, too?
Salt Lake City's registry is a god thing. It's rational and respectful of basic individual rights.
... to avoid SLC. I think I'll just keep doing my shopping and dining out in Sandy.... save your comments.. I'm sure you city dwellers will be glad I stay away
Gay people have NOT been subsidizing the heterosexual lifestyle for as long as child tax credits have been in existence, they are getting off paying next to nothing for THEIR future. Who do you think is going to take care of you when you are in the nursing home?
When do I as a non-parent receive a per child deduction? Or any deduction on my taxes based on quantity of off-spring? I don't get tax breaks simply because I breed, believe me, I pay my way to the tune of 25% of my income to taxes. And who will take care of me in the nursing home? I guess the people I am paying to do their jobs with the money I worked for and earned.
RE:another reason..As a "city dweller", thanks for taking your business elsewhere, it will make it easier for me to find a parking spot when there are fewer of you....um...what do you call people from Sandy City? Not "city dwellers", so maybe just keep your head stuck in the Sand(y) and we'll call it even.
We are all (heterosexual, homosexual) mostly alike.
We all need and seek Love, Commitment, Companionship, Mutual respect & support. We all engage in (the same) sexual acts. The difference is that homosexuals choose to do those things with their own gender, ruling out procreation. Hence what destinguishes homosexual behavior is the sex act without the possibility of procreation.
not that there is anything wrong with that...
