Mergers could mean higher fares, fewer flights

Duh! Why do you think they are merging? To boost profitability of course.

Listening to a Dem congresman on the news, the only reason to allow the merger is if theyare going to reduce ticket prices and pay their employees more. Obviously he never made aliving in the real world.

The airlines must return to profitability to continue to exist. They will have to charge fares that accurately reflect the costs of operating in a world where oil has become ten times as expensive in as many years and will only be more exensive in the future. In order to charge those fares they have to shrink thier capacity to match the much smaller customer base willing to pay them.

In simple terms this means that flying is once again going to be a privlidge for the rich. The rest of us will be going back to busses and trains.

This also means that further expansion of airport capacity will no longer serve any purpose.
