WHy Utah didn't do anything before?
Why are you Deseret Morning News taking a part that seems to support FLDS actions?
You want to show something different only or don't want to see and show the reality of polygamy????
I pray that God will show us all the true behind FLDS and why not the true behind LDS history too.

My heart goes out to these mothers. Answear this "any mother in this USA" wouldn't you be desperate to get your beloved children back. This is atrocious!!!

Do the math. A 40 year old Flds woman and her oldest child is only 13? They let her wait until she was 27 to have a kid. Sounds fishy to me.

Child Protective Services is a business. If they have a lot of children to handle that is job security. The interest of the child is many times the last thing on their minds. Children are emotionally abused by being separated from there mothers. In the name of protecting the children, real abuse takes over.

utah - there is something very wrong with someone who has not pity for tearing apart families. Lots of posts getting angry at Jeffs for tearing apart families... but this is okay?!!! I suppose you're at your safe little home, with your loving family doting on your every need? Many of us may not support/understand FLDS or LDS beliefs...BUT!!! Even more we have the sense to realize when something has gone to far.
utah | 1:29 p.m. April 10, 2008
So....the FLDS went not too far???
So.... You guys think that is better to be sexually molested or raped than be separated from your abusers?
I don't really understand you. Did you read the whole thing? Did you hear Flora Jessop and the others that escaped before?
I'm sorry if I sound so critical, I just wish these children don't have to deal with sexual abuse anymore.

Use Your Head | 1:31 p.m. April 10, 2008
Well just think about what these mothers are allowing their children to do, the kind of life that they are forcing them to be brought up in...would you leave your children with a mother who allows her daughter to be taken and married to an older man at 12? Understanding that your daughter can easily be abused and that's ok? All of the children need to be taken and evaluated by authorities before being let back with their parents. After this raid I hope these people are forced into mainstream life or understand that they will be monitored by authorities from now on--the children are the victims idiots, not the ignorant mothers
Kate | 1:34 p.m. April 10, 2008
I believe it is wrong to separate the mothers and children like that. I think people posting here forget that even FLDS children need their mothers too, and that separating them like this is wrong
John | 1:36 p.m. April 10, 2008
I have sympathy for the mother, but I also has sympathy for the child. Where was the mother when they married her 12 year old daughter off?
Hans | 1:44 p.m. April 10, 2008
This is intolerable. The only reason the other women were allowed to accompany the children was to avert the bad press of the last raid.

It was the stories of children being ripped from their mothers' arms that swayed public opinion against the government back then. I bet when all the hoopla dies down a bit on this, they will eject the mothers and quickly throw the kids into foster homes, where they'll learn the true meaning of abuse.

The state owns your babies now.
amazed1 | 1:42 p.m. April 10, 2008
Flora Jessop and others who have left are ALL we have ever heard. If you "heard" about one teacher molesting, raping, having sex with or beating underage students...would you agree that the whole school should shut down and ALL the students carted off elsewhere? The ONLY OPINIONS we have are based on what we have heard from embittered ex-members. Can you honestly think that EVERY FLDS girl is sexually abused? And to "force" them into "mainstream life" good grief what kind of a statement is that...you just got done telling us they have been forced to live like they do and now you want to FORCE them to do something different!
utah | 1:47 p.m. April 10, 2008
I wonder if these "mothers" have shown birth certificates and IDs so they can probe they are the real mothers when asking to see them.
Anonymous | 1:51 p.m. April 10, 2008
Maybe their children were among the ones who couldn't identify their mothers and didn't know what their birthdays were.
Concerned Parent | 1:52 p.m. April 10, 2008
This is heartbreaking. Clearly CPS has not allowed the mothers who went with the children to remain together as a family, as they'd like us to think. If this were true, they would have noticed by now that these mother's children are missing.
And the fact that they weren't home when the kids were taken just goes to show that the women can leave the ranch, and all those stories about them being detained are just a bunch of gossip.
Quality Foster Care? | 1:56 p.m. April 10, 2008
I am all for the removal of the children, but very concerned of the potential foster homes. Here in Utah many children are abused physically, mentally, and sexually while in foster homes. These are not the best foster homes of Utah mind you. There are great foster homes out there, but when you place 400 kids with short notice, you cannot be picky. The stated will take whatever they can get. I'm not sure this circumstance is much worse than on the ranch. Hopefully they can prosecute the abusive men and get the kids back in their homes. In my world we should put the whole group on probation to monitor every teen-moms to figure out whose the daddy. After a few years of intervention, leave them alone.

John - What 12 year old girl? Who is the 12 year old girl that was married off?
SadSituation | 2:14 p.m. April 10, 2008
I don't think you can blame the mothers for wanting to see their children. However I think it is best that they don't right now. The mothers have enabled this abuse because they don't know anything else. The mothers grew up with the same type of abuse and are now passing it onto their daughters. Unforunately this is not uncommon in abusive situations. It tends to pass from generation to generation unless the cycle is somehow broken. This society is destructive to women. It is my guess that the mothers would coach their children on how to respond to authorities. I'm not sure this raid will stop it but I hope it helps.
Phil | 2:27 p.m. April 10, 2008
The 40 year old women probably has older children. They just are not children any more, so not seized by the state of Texas. Does anybody in this state believe in free agency. Culture of the majority is everything.
Outraged in Texas | 2:21 p.m. April 10, 2008
Where is the ACLU when they're needed? The FLDS is not a popular religious group. But that's why the ACLU exists: to protect the constitutiuonal rights of everyone, including, and especially, unpopular groups.

I'm particularly appalled by the way the news media are covering this story, reporting, 24/7, every lurid new speculation as if it were fact, apologists for heavy-handed government tactics. This is exactly the kind of story that trashy media like CNN, Fox, CBS, ABC, NBC, etc. thrive on: Lurid Sex! Nudity! Underage Girls! Polygamy! Sin! Weird Religious Cults! A Bed!

Who among is is safe from Big Brother, when government thugs in SWAT team attire storm churches and homes, and well-meaning but misguided child welfare officials tear families apart, based on the flimsiest of evidence and irresponsible speculation?

I wouldn't be surprised if the 16-year-old-girl who allegedly made the initial call to child welfare officials turns out to be fictional.

I have read many, many comments on this issue over the last few days. As an active LDS member and a parent in the Utah Foster Care program, I would like to offer up an opinion. This is not meant as an attack on any specific person here, but it's important to remember that just as the Foster Care program isn't perfect, none of us are perfect parents, either. I can only speak for Utah's system, which isn't perfect, by any means, but if a heavy influx of children came into the system in this manner, they would put out the word to other states to assist with placement. They also approach family members--that already screened--in order to keep the kids with family. Long gone are the days with Foster Care is a "business", in my opinion. While it's true that there are unsatisfactory parents in the program, there are also a lot of good, loving parents, like me, who are in the program because we want to help keep the trauma these children are already going through as minimal as possible. It's a hard job, but the kids make it worth it!
A Mom | 2:31 p.m. April 10, 2008
Disgusting! Where was all that motherly concern for the childrens welfare when their daughters and step-daughters were being raped by dirty old men?

The Texas authorities allowed 133 mothers to accompany the children off the ranch. That was above and beyond what would have been allowed under the same circumstances in ANY home in this country.

This story is national news and has horrified the American public. Leave it to the DesNews to run a story portraying these adults as "victims." How appalling! You get absolutely no sympathy from me on this one.
Unbelievable!!!! | 2:36 p.m. April 10, 2008
Since when has ANYTHING these people (FLDS) have said been the truth???? When there are young girls pregnant everywhere and they claim not to have broken the law? HELLO????
Pretty interesting that the reporters have been able to get pictures of FLDS mothers with their children, yet these mothers are claiming they can't see theirs! Is the reason they can't because they won't GO see them? They want the kids to come to them? Or are they just knowingly pulling at the heart strings of people like the unbelievable posts on here?
Difficult to understand how people feel for mothers making these claims, but not for children whom have been abused!?!?!
WAKE UP!!! Honestly! There will always be the stories of CPS removing children where nothing was founded. However, not of this magnitude! Also, consider the actual ratio. The occasional story versus the ACTUAL warranted accounts of abuse!
In my opinion, too often the parents of abused children are given multiple chances and fail. All while the children pay the price. There has to be a line somewhere! Completion of a class does not a good parent make!!!!
Guilty until proven innocent? | 2:35 p.m. April 10, 2008
I don't agree with underage marriages but taking peoples children away with no evidence (they might have it for a few but surely not for all 416) is attrocious. This is wrong on so many levels.

What happened to innocent until proven guilty?
Where's the evidence (the woman who initially called)?

I am not defending the actions of those individuals who are breaking the law (underage marraiges, abuse, etc...). I am sure some justice will be meted out when this is all over. However, it is just as important for the government to OBEY the law and to respect the rights of its citizens when collecting evidence. Sad situation all around.
Kate | 2:41 p.m. April 10, 2008
Finally some are seeing the truth! The precedent has been set. It can be applied to a neighborhood, a church, a school, or a place of employment. If one person makes a complaint, EVERYONES kids can be taken into protective custody. Dont try to convince me they cant or wont. They just did it! While I agree that child abuse cannot be tolerated, this action will not stop this group. Their worst fears of the outside world have just been confirmed. They will only become more secretive and isolated.
Amy | 2:51 p.m. April 10, 2008
Interesting comments- especially those who are stating how these kids are treated in their families when it is unlikely that any of those people making the comments have been around a polygamous family, or in their homes at all. Your opinions are probably based on the very loud accusations made by the Flora Jessops out there. I have a few sisters who got divorced & then declared due to their marital unhappiness that they no longer believed in marriage- "everyone should just live with a lover until it is no longer optimal, & then move on to a new one." I guess since so many people are divorced, that must mean marriage is horrible & should not exist. One of my sisters was abused. That must mean all men hurt their wives, huh? Or MAYBE we should not judge everyone in a given group by the wrongs of a few. What ever happened to "innocent until proven guilty"? No parent should ever have their children taken without definate proof that parent is abusive. I hope those guilty of abuse are prosecuted, while the loving parents' kids are returned to them. I can't imagine how scary this must be for them.

People....a phone caller who "says" they are abused wants help so they take a community. Is there something wrong with that? I think so. I live in Texas. I have reported an abuse. No action was taken. You have to be careful of what you are believing and who you are believing to be factual and truthful. Texas is the Bible belt. There is deep mistrust and HATE, yes hate, of people who are not "Christian". The term Christian depends on the denomination and the pastor. There is open persecution in Texas of the "cults" and it is not considered wrong or unconstitutional.....
And you know best!!! | 2:52 p.m. April 10, 2008
I at first glance a lot of the things being said seem outrageous. I know some of "these people". Some have done things that they should not have.
Family is many things to many people. We learn from birth to live inside our own world. These woman will go back home.
Some never did fit in ie. "Flora" (whom if you knew on a personal level) would most likely disspise!!! Others find LOVE, Comfort, Safety, and yes; respect in it's own way.
I know you think Tarzan would be happier in New York. But, if you think about it, he had a working, functioning life before the great white hunters found him... For good, or for bad. These people have lives that give most of them a since of pourpose and happiness.
Most of us in the "regular- outside" world, have enough keeping our own noses clean. When you have your house in order, come tell me about mine. Till then, mind your own business.

You were given a brain for a reason, so use it. Every single thing these people have done is not evil, and every single person hasn't necessarily participated in the underage marriages. Common sense and clear heads need to prevail, and yours isn't one. Quit assuming everything word you hear or read from the media is absolute truth!! This must be addressed, but it MUST be done without violating individual rights! We live in the U.S. for a reason.

SadSituation...you are an authority on abuse? YOU don't think the mothers should be with their children? It's your guess - and only that! You know nothing about these mothers. You would be like the state - steal the children and "if you do what we say,you might get them back". Do you have children of your own? Do you teach them anything or do they just raise themselves so they don't get indoctrinated with YOUR traditions? And this girl calling the shelter, how was she able to specifically call the shelter if they are not able to leave and have no access to phones etc. This whole ordeal gets more and more insane!!!
Let them be | 3:12 p.m. April 10, 2008
These birth mothers (if they can prove who their biological children are) SHOULD have the right to be with their children. I don't understand why they are being kept separate. Do they believe the Mother's are a potential threat? Do they consider them accessories to the abuse? They (women) haven't been arrested yet, so there must be nothing the gov't has probable cause against them for. SO WHY CAN'T THESE MOM'S HOLD THEIR OWN BABIES. This is ludicrous! I can't believe this is happening in America.
Larry | 3:11 p.m. April 10, 2008
I hope they get those girls out of Texas ASAP. Put them in homes on the east coast far away from all LDS. Give them a chance for a real life.

To: Guilty until proven Innocent?
You ask where is the evidence (of sexual abuse) perhaps it is found in the many pregnant teenagers and teenage mothers they removed from the compound. When the issue is abuse of children they need to remove first and figure it out after. Plus, I firmly believe they have long been gathering information regarding this group of people. I really don't care if they are practicing plural marriage - it just must be between consenting adults. They must be "forced" to stop marrying off the children. The idea of a teenager being married to a middle aged man is sick.

Some people are so worried for the children being taken away from their mothers. Over a hundred adult mothers (and many teenage mothers) are with the children now - I think they are being cared for by people they know and probably love.

I am so worried about all those kids being thrown in to foster homes. I have personally known 4 people who had been in foster homes as teens- 2 girls, 2 boys- & all 4 of them say they were molested. I don't know if it's just a coincidence, but my friends' experiences make me think that system is not such a safe place for kids. I'm sure there are good foster homes, but HOW do pedophiles get into the Child "Protective" Services??? Or qualify as foster parents??? It is terrifying to think that a child can be torn from loving parents because their religion is unpopular, and placed with strangers where they may or may not be safe. I'm hoping & praying the state of Texas takes the greatest of care in the matter, & only goes after abuse, NOT tearing apart loving families simply out of their own personal prejudice. Since the underage marriage issue is a big concern, why not put the girls(where no abuse proves true) back with their families, but under state supervision, to be checked on every few months until 18, to prevent said marriages. Wouldn't the parents cooperate, rather than lose their kids?
Deep in the Heart | 3:53 p.m. April 10, 2008
The raid occurred nearly a week ago, and the girl whose alleged call led authorities to intervene claims to be of a certain age and pregnant, yet no one can say who she is. They don't know which of the teenagers is pregnant? Really? She allegedly asked for help in leaving, and now she can, so why hasn't she stepped forward? When these mothers start appearing in court with a lawyer demanding to know what hard evidence exists for the seizure of their children, we may well see that the answer is precious little. I'm opposed to this group, but I am also opposed to excessive and ill-advised government force.
northmom | 4:08 p.m. April 10, 2008
I side for the children here. No mother should let her young child go off into a room for sex with an old man and to be called his wife! It would be as bad to let a mother sell her little girl on a street corner! Yes, it was right for the TX Gov to go in and remove the children and with hopes to put and END to the abuse of the children in the name of an FLDS god/gods. This is no church! this is a place of child and women abuse! I feel for the mothers only as far as them being a victem in all this as well as the children. And if the Gov can help the young in this, then so be it. I am no fan of the foster care system, but I would not want any little child to go back into any FLDS compound. The US gives us all the freedom to worship God as we will. But we can not let abuse run free in the name of God.
I pray for the children and the mothers in this, that they could be free of years of abuse.

It is incredible that this illegal action can be justified under any pretense. No organization thrives so much and for so long, as the FLDS were under such supposed harsh and cruel circumstances. Perhaps they were getting too big and the government had to shut them down.
important? | 4:37 p.m. April 10, 2008
They have nearly 20 pregnant Sixteen year old girls WITH babies about 8 months old. They have younger mothers there than 16...
Is it really that important which one she is? They went in looking for 1 girl and they found nearly 20 that "fit" the reason for the search warrant.
It would be stupid to think that they would identify the girl so she could be a target for every reporter. Think things through...

The LDS people are very different from this shoot off sect (the FLDS). The LDS Church does not promote nor condone child abuse.
The children would be safe and to some level "understood" by the LDS members. The foster families will need to be understanding of the childrens other beliefs like the ones about food and drink.
Some odd comments here... | 4:43 p.m. April 10, 2008
The phone call from the girl gave authorities the probable cause to enter and search for her and a suspect. Once inside, officers found several underage girls who were either pregnant or had just given birth. The police have a duty to act on apparent violations of the law---the purpose for being there is irrelevant, as long as they were involved in a legal search. Didnt you read the news accounts? During the initial search for the caller, 18 underage girls were removed and immediately placed into foster care on the first day. The judge then expanded the scope of the search warrant based on reports of the initial investigation.

As far as CPS goes, the law does not require proof of abuse to remove children. Children are removed from homes everyday because a reasonable belief exists that the childs home environment is unsafe. In this unusual case, the FLDS environment is communal and subject to a patriarchy that sanctions sexual relations with girls and abandons the excess boys. The mothers could possibly get their children back if its determined they did not (and will not) contribute to the abuse, and can provide a safe environment for the kids.

Bravo, Texas! You just proved to those people that all their fears of the outside world coming after them and taking away their kids again, are true. Now the tens of thousands of them in other places will probably close themselves off even more- the very thing authorities in and around Utah, who have ALOT more experience with these people, have been trying to avoid. Finally, during the last few years, alot of progress has been made in opening up communication between polygamists and government. Now, that progress and the increasingly successful attempts to get their communities to open up, may be very negatively affected by this brazen assault on one such community. And to all those criticizing Az. for not doing this sooner- they DID in 1953. And it was a complete disaster! So they settled on leaving out the Nazi-type tactics and going after only CRIMES. That's the American way! But think about this- now if another girl like "Sarah"(if she exists) wants to call for help, she is far less likely to do it for fear all of her family, friends & neighbors will be hurt by her so doing. Texas may cause a didasterous ripple effect.

This is standard procedure when investigating abuse in a home, especially sexual abuse.
The mothers are suspects in the case as contributing to said abuse by inaction.

Let's walk this through. A report is made of child abuse. By law, the responder must act. By law, they must report and act. By law (and decency).

Imagine if we found out that a responder had heard a complaint and had not acted upon it! We would be screaming for that person's license, etc.

So the responder has no choice. Society set this up so that the very serious charges of child abuse, rape, incest, etc., will be looked into. Society set up this protection for the children (the possible victims). All states do this!

Texas and the lady who got the call had no choice in the matter. Society set up the laws that we all play by. Why? Do you really wonder why? You do not understand child protection services? Where have you been? On Mars? Venus? Prison?

Texas did what Texas had to do. Now they will follow the law and sort things out. What kind of adults tell children not to tell the police anything? And why? My mom always taught me that the police were our friends. That is what civilized societies promote. Only criminals would oppose that. Only criminals.

The Shadow Knows.

With due respect to freedom of religion, this sect fully endorses breaking the law by arranging and sanctioning plural marriages with underage brides. Marriage between family members has led to several generations of members with readily apparent genetic disorders and lag in cognitive development. Hats off to the Texas officials who have intervened... now let's see if Arizona officials have the courage to do likewise.
