I hope the day soon comes that smokers will be banned from spreading their toxic gas within 1000 yards of any living creature. Good job politicians! You take a lot of heat, but you made a good choice.

If someone spits on your face while you are walking down the street, it is assault. But if they contaminate what you are breathing, making you inhale toxins and carcinogens, that, in most cities, is allowed.

I'd rather have spit on my face than poison in my lungs.

Re: non-smoker

I drive an electric car. I despise the emissions that are given out by your gas-guzzling Hummers and SUVs. So, I think that you should not be allowed to spead your toxic gas anywhere near my house, where I work, or public schools. Diesel engines are even worse. Firetrucks run on diesel. Lets get rid of those. Politicians would take the heat, but I think it would be a good choice.

RE: To BOB's comment

Hey buddy you better move out of UT then. Any one of the yellow to Red burn days are allot worse for you than a passing whiff of someone smoking as you walk by.

Better not ever go camping again either.

Better not hang out at a BBQ either, or do any kind of adopt a highway litter control work. Forget about ever shooting a gun, lighting any kind of fireworks, etc, etc.

Yes I'm inhaling more of these things by smoking, but it's my choice. Smoking is my choice, and I'll do what suits me. If you don't want to be contaminated, you need to lock yourself into an air-locked room and stay there.

I don't think our politicians are supposed to be getting payed to tell their citizens every little thing to do. It is people like you who want the state and federal governments to tell you what you can and cannot do so you don't have to use your own common sense. Yeah let's get rid of firetrucks. Who are you going to call when YOUR house burns down?

Cigarettes are the least of our worries. Anyone smart enough to go to the EPA website and search County Air Quality Reports will see that Salt Lake County's PM2.5 particulate pollution, the most toxic of all air pollution, exceeds Los Angeles's by a long shot. Too bad Jon Huntsman and his SUV-driving cronies don't realize that by not passing laws to decrease air pollution (anti-idling laws, incentives to take mass transit) they are endangering all of our health.

Where will this end? There are no conclusive studies that show that a person smoking a cigarette in a public park will hurt or kill another person walking by or sitting 20 ft away. Why don't we focus on the real issues. Like illegal drugs, crimes, too much goverment spending and allowing goverment to take away our rights. If tabaco is really that bad for us , why is it still legal? Get your facts straight and don't throw away your rights. People are already lobbying to stop obese people from getting bigger. That effects quite a few people here in Utah. How would you like to be turned away from a resturant just because you are 20 pounds over weight? Or have your child taken away because you feed him more fast food then you make nutritional food at home. That could be considered as abuse, harmful, neglegent bad parenting! Maybe then you'll understand that its not just about a bad habit or bad choices. It is about our rights! That is why the Constitution and the Bill of Rights were set in place. They set these in place to protect the majority and the minority of the people.
