It is the epitome of blasphomy for left-wing, big government RINO Republicans like Rep. Allen and Holdaway to call themselves the Reagan caucus. The FDR, Carter or Clinton caucus maybe, but Reagan? Sorry guys, he would not even acknowledge your there.
News flash; government grew under the Reagan administration. I loved Reagan as much as anyone but lets be realistic. By the way, Reagan was a big supporter of FDR.
This is the stupidest story I have read of yours today. In the Senate Greiner and VanTassel are unopposed? That is because they are not up for re-election this year! How are you the political reporter?
Bernick only writes stupid stories. What did you expect A-Hem? No one talks about vouchers more than Bernick. Perhaps the DNews should consider making its own change.
Bob, what's the deal with Reagan? The "movement conservatives" are trying, posthumously, to turn him into a sort of god. He just put a glib, happy face on the tired, old worn out conservative ideas. As I recall, he ran up the budget deficit, and started the attack on middle class Americans with his union busting activities.
He wasn't much of an actor and he was a mediocre president.
So, garnishing about 40% of the public's vote in an off-year election is a flaming defeat, eh? Subtract the teachers union members and their immediate families they marshalled to storm the vote -- and you're left with the regular public who represents the parents rather than teachers. That's when the scale tips the other direction.
In other words, the off-year election numbers don't reflect the will of the rank and file parent, but the will of the union membership -- which is sad.
Funny article by Bob Bernick. The two state senators he mentions as having "no opponents" aren't up for re-election. Either this demonstrates in anti-parental choice philosophy or he doesn't understand that Utah State Senators are elected every four years -- not every two years.
Bob, if you want to influence policy, why don't you do it honestly and run for office like those you love to attack in your column. Oh wait, then everything you said and did would be twisted around by a "journalist" like you trying to push his own agenda. I swear the Deseret News feels compelled to keep you in order to keep pace with the over-the-top liberal Salt Lake Tribune who happens to sell more papers than they do.
I think this is a rediculous idea. "How dare you try a new idea for education. And because you did, we're sure going to punish you for it." Too bad vouchers lost.
Aside from the glaring inaccuracies in this article, what's the deal with the poor writing?? My goodness. I think it's time for Bob to take a refresher course in basic writing skills.
I'm not a teacher, a union member, a family member, or any member of anything, and I voted against the corrupt voucher deal that would've enriched a half dozen powerful legislators who are in the "private school" biz. Talk about crooks! Also, I didn't want to pay for education twice!
Lavar Christensen is conservative on social issues. He's a populist on fiscal issues.
Christensen's repeatedly refers to Reagan, the Founding Fathers, "values", and "principles", but he's terribly weak when it comes to standing up to the UEA and UPEA on things like taxes and education reform.
Christensen was VERY weak on vouchers and only voted for it (2005?) after PCE threatened to campaign against him in his next election.
Looks like the Neo Cons are out in force on the blogs.
were a horrible idea. Hopefully anyone who supported them will not be re-elected.
To Vouchers: You said "were a horrible idea. Hopefully anyone who supported them will not be re-elected. " Can you tell us anything better that would have fixed the education problem that your brothers at the universities and Public Education arenas have really screwed up? At least someone was trying to do something. All you can do is to yell "throw more money at the problem, that will fix it."
Do us a favor and take your tired old liberal fascist ideals to another country, please.
Reagan enacted amnesty while he was in office. There is no way Reagan would associate with the conservative caucus in the legislature.
Matt
You proved a point about Utah education. Learn to spell.
To GeeWizz: voucher's would have "fixed the education problem"? Really? How would it have done that with only an estimated 3% of public school students using vouchers under the program (and the vast majority of those already in private schools)? How would vouchers have helped the areas with the largest achievement gaps (rural areas with no private schools)? Taking a look at the problem and not regurgitating uninformed feel-good talking points is a better foundation for a discussion.
