BYU QBs wear green shirts at practice to seperate them from the rest of the team. Other teams QBs wear red jerseys to practice. They found out that when BYU QBs had to wear Ute colors they threw stupid interceptions and choked. Hence the switch.
Covey | 7:13 a.m. March 25, 2008
I think after Steven Covey has a chance to sharpen his saw, and continues to put first things first, his Habits will certainly create a Win Win situation for everyone. In the meantime, Gaskins will be an great backup.

Which son of the orginial 7 habit forming Steve Covey Sr is the QB Steve Covey? sean's son or another uncle? how many covey kids did Steve Sr. have? from everything i have heard, this Steve Covey is the real deal. it would be great to have a wishbone/triple threat combo plays worked into the system to keep defenses on their toes. Gaskins better be ready to go as Hall is a marked man in his sophomoric (although actually a junior) year. defensive blitzes are headed his way this year. i wonder if the cougs will miss So'oto's blocking. it's interesting that Dan Coats was the only TE 2 years ago to make it in the NFL b/c he could block. Even Harline didn't make it and he could catch the ball like willie mays.
Funny stuff | 7:30 a.m. March 25, 2008
St. Patty. . . that was funny. And so true I'm crying inside.

Covey. . . you're right, except you forgot to mention the "synergy" that will take place with this team once they're fully "invested" and put first things first.
FB Fan | 7:40 a.m. March 25, 2008
Covey is 4th team QB, Kurt McEuen is 3rd team QB - he is a much better QB than Covey if you watch them at practice. McEuen has performed the first week better than Gaskins so keep your eye on him.
Nadiesabe | 7:58 a.m. March 25, 2008
He's Sean's nephew.

Having all these local and Utah QB's on the roster makes me very nervous. Time to go down to Texas or some other state and start recruiting QB's. Why hasn't our coaches signed a QB this year? They should sign one every year. Time to hit the JC ranks as well.
So'oto | 8:54 a.m. March 25, 2008
What they definitely won't miss from this guy is his penchant for 15 yard personal foul penalties!
RE: BYUTexan | 9:08 a.m. March 25, 2008
You are right. Bronco and Co have no idea what they are doing and how many QB's they have and their need for more. Submit an app...maybe you can become the new head coach because we all know Bronco has shown his incompetency the past few years. Lol I love it when BYU fan thinks he's smarter than BYU staff.
Utah Cougar | 9:49 a.m. March 25, 2008
Can we stop all the 14 year old girls from commenting on this blog. LOL? who writes LOL in a sports commentary. And as far as recruiting for QB's, it's not all Utah, look at John Beck. And by the way BYUTexan, not all good football players come out of Texas. It's true there are a lot of great players taht came from there, like Ty Detmer, but Utah does have some great players too.
Re: BYUTexan | 9:53 a.m. March 25, 2008
Hall and Gaskins are from AZ.
Anonymous | 10:06 a.m. March 25, 2008
Gaskins is from Farmington, New Mexico
Anonymous | 10:11 a.m. March 25, 2008
I live in the Farmington new Mexico area. Gaskins is from Farmington.Played for the local high school and did real well.
QB Talk | 10:23 a.m. March 25, 2008
Covey could play the role Tim Tebow played behind Rex Grossman. Covey is a great quaterback that can run the ball very well. He can mix things up on offense. One more note, Jason Munns is from Washington, and Football in Utah is VERY competitive.
QB race.. | 10:28 a.m. March 25, 2008
Keep your eye on Kurt McEuen...the cougars will be short-changing themselves if they dont give him a legitimate shot to at least back up Max Hall. He definitely has the arm and mechanics to start for the cougs.
Gaskins | 10:39 a.m. March 25, 2008
Brenden is not 6'5". I am 6'5" and i'm in a few of his classes and i can tell you he is no where close. At best 6'3". Makes me wonder how much Harvey Unga's little brother really weighs. He is from New Mexico.
Re: QB Talk | 11:00 a.m. March 25, 2008
Come on "QB Talk", Grossman was in the NFL by the time Teabow came around. As a true freshman he backed up/came in as a running threat for Chris Leak, not Rex Grossman. You possibly make a good point, although Covey is very small and Teabow is bigger than the linebackers, so he probably can't take the same kind of beating.
Who cares | 11:16 a.m. March 25, 2008
Just win a meaningful game this year cougs...Tired of being "close" to a bcs game, or "close" to winning a big one. Man up already, and no, Utah is not a big win. And one more thing...congrats to the cougs hoops team for getting "close" to getting out of the first round once again. Pff...please.

I love being sold short. It makes post-victory smack all the sweeter.

Several years ago I watch a Las Vegas Pass/Skill tournament involving Arizona, SoCal, Vegas and Utah teams. The smack was the slow boys from Utah were at a disadvantage with a 7 on 7 format without pads where skill and speed would dominate. The team from Compton was particularly racist in their views.

The teams from Utah dominated and destroyed everyone. The semi-finals were with 3 Utah teams. The finals between two Utah teams. When Fonnesbeck kept getting deep on the speedy guys from Compton lots of silence prevailed and then lots of excuses when other Utah receivers blitzed and tormented the other squads.

Sell Utah short. The post-victory whining will be all the sweeter.

Only five more months till college football season starts.......*sigh*

Lets just keep our players out of jail on the field.
Re: Who cares | 12:22 p.m. March 25, 2008
Utah is ALWAYS a big one; ANYONE who says that beating Utah/BYU isn't a big win, isn't a true Cougar/Ute fan. Doesn't matter whether one team is 12-0 and the other is 0-12, it's always a meaningful game for both teams.

Looking forward to seeing two 12-0 teams meeting in November with a MWC championship and BCS berth on the line.
practice | 12:53 p.m. March 25, 2008
Covey will compete his jr. year. He is kinda small....but athletic!! One cannott coach being an athlete.

By the way, I was impressed with the defense. It was further along than I expected and Sooto' (sp check) looked good, so did #47---don't know his name. I'll say this, the defense can flat out get to the ball. They are a faster group than the last two years.

The first team offense will score a lot of points in a hurry. The run game will only be stopped by packing seven in the box. It was Wow!!! Dilugi will get spot time only but he has those RB instincts.. Unga looked quicker in his cuts.

Expect a big year, but probably not BCS.....12-1 with a loss to Washington.
John | 12:59 p.m. March 25, 2008
You gotta go out there and give it 110%. You gotta know what you have to do and just go out and do it.
BBKing | 1:09 p.m. March 25, 2008
Wouldn't that be world class for both BYU and Utah to be 12-0 going into the Holy War. And of course BYU wins 34-31 on a last second blocked kick. BYU goes to a BCS game and Utah gets stuck in Las Vegas. haha

Dare to dream!
12-0 teams | 1:10 p.m. March 25, 2008
Considering that BYU and Utah will have only played at most 11 games by the time they meet this year, it is not possible that one let alone both would be 12-0 when they meet in November.
CougarBlue | 2:40 p.m. March 25, 2008
Covey just came off a mission, so he is not going to be as accurate, or as athletic, or strong as the others. Give him time. Seems TY Detmer wasn't that big either.

We always have to remember that a backup is only one hit away from being the starter. Gaskins last year was pegged as 3rd string until the 2nd string QB hurt his foot on the 4-5 play of the Blue-White game and ended his career at BYU.

BYU can only play the schools who are willing to play them. Many Big 10 and Big 12 schools as well as the SECC won't play them because they know they have a chance of getting beat when they come to play in the high altitude and only have 1,000 fans compared to 64,000 screaming BYU fans. The PAC 10 is a little more willing to play BYU.

If memory serves me right last year 3 Utah teams played 3 California teams and beat them. California has some pretty good teams.
BlueCoug | 3:23 p.m. March 25, 2008
BYU and Utah both at 11-0 would be an exciting game and bring certain national attention.

Are both teams even capable of such a fete?

BYU, except for non-conference road games the past two years, seems up to the task.

Utah, minus Urban Meyer, has a habit of dropping the ball during conference games a couple of times every season.
Future QB's | 4:44 p.m. March 25, 2008
BYU has done an excellent job developing and recruiting QB's they have a few going to be HS seniors that they are very interested in. Doman is an excellent QB coach and probably a future Offensive Coordinator . Right now Gaskins is Hall's heir to the throne. That means they won't know who will replace Gaskins for several years. All those in the mix now won't be the guy. One QB to keep your eye on down the road is the Alta state championship QB and 5a player of the year Ryan Rosenvall he is 6'3" and fast!!. He has committed to play for Pasadena JC in Southern Cal. and has several D1 schools looking at him down the road including UCLA. His QB coach is in LA and he wants more exposure, he has great mechanics and foot work and will be able to start for Pasadena as a Freshman and then go on a LDS mission in January. I know that one of the schools he is very interested in is BYU after his mission.

Has anyone actually seen Covey on the field? He is a head shorter than all the other QB's and not much arm. If he is 177 lbs then I still weigh 225. Yeah right and don't I wish !! But alas ..no. Notice Gaskins report form yesterday's practice? 5 of 5 for 7 yds. Just like the spring game last year. Lots of completions and not many yards. I agree with several of the posters above..I think McEuen has more arm than any of the QB's, including Hall and is finally getting some reps this spring and has been noticed by coaches. Maybe they removed their blinders finally.
QB Derby | 5:59 p.m. March 25, 2008
Covey running is high school is a far cry from college. He will be roadkill in fairly short (sorry..no pun intended) order.
What? | 9:43 p.m. March 25, 2008
Please don't compare Covey to Tim Tebow!
Bill | 9:43 p.m. March 25, 2008
Covey is about 5'10" with about the same speed as Harvey Unga they ran HS track together. He was offered a scholie to keep Grandpa's Endowment flowing to the university. He is probably a better fit at Snow or Dixie College.
BYU = great | 10:14 p.m. March 25, 2008
utah = middle of the pack. Enough said!
Calif Cougar | 11:13 p.m. March 25, 2008
Wow, Bill, you are so rude and disrespectful to the Coveys. I'd be ashamed of myself if I were you.
QB Derby | 7:11 a.m. March 26, 2008
Bill is right though. Tha fact that Covey was scholarshipped is amazing.
QB | 8:24 a.m. March 26, 2008
There are several good QB without scholarships at BYU.
I guess money talks. Doman is a straight shooter when it comes to placing proper depths on the QB chart. The bottom line is they will have the QB in there that will win games. Just because a QB has a stronger arm there is alot more to being a QB like winning games!
Re: Texas Cougar | 8:47 a.m. March 26, 2008
Not every good high school football player comes from Texas. We've all seen Friday Night Lights so spare us the "real football is only played in Texas" comments.
Nice Guy | 8:55 a.m. March 26, 2008
I am friends with Brennon. He is one of the nicest guys you will ever meet. I am glad he is doing well.
110%? | 10:18 a.m. March 26, 2008
I hate when people say you have to give it 110%. How is that even possible. You cannot give more than you have and you only have 100% of you so please everyone stop saying 110% and drop the term from your athletic vocabulary. It is only used once here but I am sure many people use it a lot so quit it!!!!!!! Oh and get rid of all the Reynolds boys on the o-line and so you have spare your qb from being hit too much and fumbling the ball.
Covey | 10:21 a.m. March 26, 2008
I know the Coveys and they are great people. This Steven Covey's family is just an oustanding group of people but will how much I look up to them I think is he a little undersized and might be better off in the defensive backfield but then again look at Missouri and Kansas who both had really small QBs and look where they ended up so maybe he will suprise us all but corner might pan out for him
to Covey | 1:26 p.m. March 26, 2008
The only problem I have with Covey is that other young men have not been afforded the same opportunity. There are many young men with his same size and speed, BYU will not even entertain the thought. The sad part is who's place did he take that could have proven himself better. Money definately talks.
RE: to Covery | 2:19 p.m. March 26, 2008
I agree with you that money talks and so does his name but Covey was also the outstanding high school player for the state of utah his senior year. I am not saying that he should start or anything like that. I am just saying that he could suprise people. He is a very smart kid with great football knowledge and he works hard. His shot at QB are slim so I was suggesting maybe looking somewhere else. He did live up to his money and his name and won a state title. He is good and his reputation probably got him a little more notice than others but he lived up to it.
to Re: | 3:12 p.m. March 26, 2008
I'm sorry but thats your opinion. A scholarship !!
come on lets be honest. It just isn't right
Brother Anderson | 1:39 a.m. March 27, 2008
Yeah Covey is great. I'm a long time BYU fan and believe that you should be a great example, serve in the community, have tradition and love for your religion and school, and should have finished a mission. For those reasons, I think Covey has the edge on Max Hall.
QB Derby | 10:33 a.m. March 27, 2008
Covey was rescruited as a DB and not a QB. Maybe he thought he had a better shot at QB not DB? But I do agree that all his attirbutes as a person are great. But a scholarship should be based on what he can contribute to the program and not a thank for what you did in high school. I don't think he brings much to the program aside from the obvious great personal traits. But there are many playing without scholarships who have the same traits. I am of the opinion that McEuen will emerge this spring.
QB | 4:24 p.m. March 27, 2008
Comments by parents and family don't count. McEuen hasn't proven anything to anybody. What counts is what you do!!!!! when the bullets are flying. The only QB on the BYU roster that has proven them selves is Max. Also don't forget. The freshman QB Stuart, he could be the dark horse. He is in the mix and could be # 2. No one will know until fall. Remember Doman will give all a fair shot.
Re Brother Anderson | 4:36 p.m. March 27, 2008
This is not table tennis this is football.
BYUTexan | 10:38 a.m. April 12, 2008
Move Covey to slot WR, take his scholly away, give him walk on status and give it to someone who needs it more. Also, start looking at other parts of the country for lds kids who want to contribute to the program. I think its a little short sited to make your recruiting base to just the local schools. Trust me Utah HS football is mediocre at best. It doesn't take that much talent to stand out and be recruited when the talent pool is thin. The should make the primary recruiting base, the USA.
