So much for respecting local culture and diversity. Washington county has been "Utah's Dixie" as long as anyone can remember and Dixie College traces its lineage and name directly back to the original Dixie Academy started by the early LDS settlers. I don't think it has ever had a nickname other than Rebels.

Why are people so upset over a name with a long acceptance and history? St. George was never known for anything to do with slavery or other unpleasantries of the Old South. Let it keep a little culture and history. These academic elites need to get off their high horses and practice a little more of that "tolerance" and "celebrating diversity" they always preach when it is to the benefit of left-wing agendas.

It was known as the St. George Academy before it was renamed Dixie Academy, thanks for missing that first point. They were also known as the Flyers before taking on the nickname Rebels.

Who cares about the nickname. After all the school is about education..not nicknames. and what would you want on your diploma..Dixie, a school most of the nation has never heard of..or the U that is nationally recognized..

I'm happy to hear the board still ignores the opinion of St. George residents
Will you write a check Leftwinge | 5:35 p.m. March 24, 2008
So if it is of the opinion of St. George residents that Dixie State College should not enlist the help of the University of Utah to meet the educational needs of one of the fastest growing metro areas of the USA, does that mean that you and all the others ancient St. Georgians who are steadfast in their ways and traditions will write the checks for the $$$$$ necessary to have DSC get there on its own?

Didn't think so.

News flash to the Deseret Morning News. The "white paper" and other official documents outlining the enhanced affiliation specifically renounce the idea that this affiliation is a "merger".

What kind of impression are you trying to create in the minds of readers? But then again, I am assuming you have botherered to read those documents.
