Stop the BCS Talk

As a BYU fan I have been burned too many times in big non conference games to get to far ahead of myself. Stop the BCS talk now! Look what it did for TCU last year.

RE: to RUD

Somebody bitter at not being accepted at BYU? Let it go, man. Your energy is better spent cheering for the yewts than coming on BYU articles and showing your lack of knowledge. Really, you're embarrassing yourself.

As for the safeties, let's not forget about Andrew Rich from Ogden's Bonneville HS. He was a JC All-American last year at Snow College as a freshman and is a big time player (otherwise Cal-Berkeley wouldn't have offered him a scholarship). Go Cougs!

GO INDEPENDENT!

If BYU were to leave the MWC (Mostly Weak Conference), here's how I see scheduling as an Independent.

* One game against each of the 6 BCS conferences - go home-and-home series against a different opponent from each conference.

* An annual game against rival Utah and let's throw Utah State in there as well so they quit whining about nobody wanting to play them.

* Reestablish a home-home with Hawaii to maintain recruiting and tradition.

* 1 game every year against a service academy - rotating teams every year (Army, Navy, Air Force).

* 2 random games against any opponent ranging from another BCS school to a D-1 FCS opponent. I could definately see a few series with Notre Dame in the mix.

So, here's how the opponent schedule could look:

1 - Big 10
2 - Big East
3 - Big 12
4 - Pac-10
5 - ACC
6 - SEC
7 - Hawaii
8 - Utah
9 - Utah State
10 - Service Academy (Army, Navy, AFA)
11 - Floating opponent (maybe C-USA)
12 - Floating opponent (maybe Notre Dame)

If the Pac-10 won't take us, then we need to go independent!

Re: Stop the BCS Talk

Let the team and coaches keep their focus on one-game-at-a-time, BYU fans are just following the coach's mantra of raising the bar. Two outright conference championships in a row. Two bowl wins. Busting the BCS is the next obvious step. Making it through September undefeated should be the next goal. Above all, winning on November 22nd (in dramatic fashion) would be sweet.

Independent would get BYU nowhere. Hasn't this issue been brought up enough.

Steve

BYU independent? Slow down there buddy!! There is now way that would ever happen and BYU has been fortunate the last couple of years to have a decent program. BYU fans think they should be in a BCS bowl every year. I don't know where this thougth process comes from. They would get destroyed in a BCS bowl!!!

Independence

Going independent would be a disaster for BYU. Scheduling any decent teams after September would be nearly impossible.

My suggestion is that UNLV plays all 8 of its conference games at home from here on out. That way, there will actually be some fans in Sam Boyd Stadium (from the visiting teams) -- and, hey, UNLV might actually win a couple games in conference instead of tanking year after year and dragging the rest of the conference down.

UNLV coaches can keep the film running post-game, and recruit the fans who actually run on the field the fastest -- bumping over little old ladies like so many George Costanzas escaping an apartment fire in the process.

Wouldn't all fans of the opposing teams rather travel to watch their team play in Vegas than making any semblance of a level playing field?

If we did that, I might even be able to sell this novel approach to satellite cable providers. Of course, we can't just focus on football on the MTN, we'll still have to balance coverage between women's Tiddly-Winks featuring Wyoming v. Colorado State.

Washington

As a die hard BYU fan lets not get the cart before the horse. I remember a 14-1 BYU team that won vs. Kansas St in the Cotton Bowl, that got spanked by Washington. BYU has struggled against Pac 10 teams even in wins and especially against UCLA and Washington. Washington has a good quarterback and will be very motivated at the first of the year on their home field. I agree that any BCS talk is premature until after the two PAC 10 games. Striving for perfection is one thing, talking about it as though it has already been accomplished is another. Go Cougars!

Re: Washington

Amen!

Here we go again...

The rivalry picks up again. This is a fun thing to be apart of, but for heavens sake BYU fans just relax. So defensive and sensative and fighting to defend the team. Seriously, just relax...quiet dignity.

BCS? Please...

Stop talking about BCS. You don't have a shot. You won't go undefeated so don't plan on it. How about you just win games and worry about it later.

To Craig's-List Thompson: nice post!!! To the DNews: It's good to see football getting back into the discussion. Even though I'm currently cheering for the BBall team, I CAN'T WAIT UNTIL FOOTBALL SEASON!!! I'm not hinting it will happen, but I can take a disappointing finish to a baskeball season (As BYU fans, we all should be used to it), but not football! Hopefully our guys can avoid the injuries they had last year during the pre-season workouts. It sounds like the team is really putting in some tough workouts...man, I can't wait to see these guys tear it up! GO COUGARS!!!!!!

Utah Man

While I agree that bYu will be a good team next year, take it one game at a time! Lets be realistic here. Utah and TCU will both be good teams as well. Utah will be your toughest game of the year. As I look at bYu, realistically, It is my opinion that your beloved cougs will end up with 3 losses (WU, UCLA, Utah). It is also my opinion that Utah has a better shot at yet another BCS game than bYu has at getting in for the first time. Utah's first game of the season will be the springboard for the entire season. If the Utes beat Michigan in the big house (which is very, very possible) watch out, as they have a very favorable home schedule. The toughest game for the Utes will be against bYu. Hears to the Utes and Cougs going undefeated until the big one in November.

Just my $.02

GO UTES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Spudman

Don't forget to schedule BSU if you go independent.
They would love to play BYU every year as long as it is a home game.

Whatever

you can't ever get to a bcs game. you're never leaving the mountain west.

Independent...Umm... NO

Won't happen. Period.
We aren't Notre Dame.
The MWC is good for us. Just sit back and enjoy the ride and maybe someday we'll get a playoff.

BYU Hater

Wah, wah, wah, I hate BYU, wah, wah, wah. So I get on here to vent and criticize because I don't have any other skills that actually contribute. Wah, wah, wah.

To Trolling Y Haters

While the BCS talk is premature, it is not unfounded. Those posting claims such as "you can't ever get to a BCS game," or "you won't go undefeated, so don't plan on it" are proposing as a fact unseen future events.

The Utes may lay claim to being the first to bust the BCS, but they talk as if they are the only ones to do so. We have all seen that BSU and Hawaii are evidence that it can happen...even with a horribly weak schedule.

So to the Y haters (read frustrated Ute fan)you need to understand that two incredibly great years under Urban renewal do not a storied football program make. I'll take the Y's storied past, present, and bright future.

If the Cougars take care of business (i.e. an undefeated season), a BCS berth is guaranteed. I'm not saying it will happen, but I don't illogically proclaim it will NEVER happen.

But I do believe "Magic Happens!"
