Unfortunately for all involved the rules were broken and several people were hurt. However, it wasn't as bad as it could have been. And congrats to the Rebels!

Don't get it

Can anyone tell me why the MWC is so in love with UNLV. The school is nothing more than a glorified JC and only attracts those who couldn't get in to a real college.

Troo Bloo

"One person from the MWC office pointed out that at the last two Las Vegas bowls that BYU fans rushed onto the field and it took a long time to get them off the field."

Give me a break! I was very close to the field at the Las Vegas Bowl and saw the whole thing unfold. There was absolutely no attempt to keep the fans from entering the field once the game ended. Fans began lining up on the stairs as the clock wound down, and were engaged in friendly conversation with the security people. They would not allow fans off the stairs until the game ended (they had to collar a couple who tried to jump the gun), but once the game ended they gave us the green light. Again, there was absolutely no attempt to keep fans off the field once the game had ended. What a crock!

How About San Diego

I've attended six conference tournaments in Las Vegas. They used to be fun, but now it's become a dangerous environment. Alcohol and college basketball fans are a bad mixture. I'm amazed that alcohol is served well into the second half at tournament games. (I'm not LDS, by the way.)
It's become too much of a homecourt advantage for UNLV and their fans out of control, drowning out the opponent's bands and cheerleaders during timeouts, shouting obscenities, throwing beer cups and punches.
I'd suggest that the MWC move the tournament to San Diego, but given Commissioner Craig Thompson's lack of guts, it will never happen. Count on UNLV winning the tournament for the next two years.

Bad

Dirty BYU fans trying to rough up the after-party.

UNLV has no class. Never has.

As a UNLV graduate and native Las Vegan I was horrified to see some of the things that took place. It is true that some UNLV fans got out of control and that should not happen. But to paint the picture that all UNLV fans are that way is simply ignorant. There are a few bad apples in every bunch, even in Provo. From where I was sitting next to the BYU section I saw quite a few BYU fans verbally taunting UNLV fans as well. To say that no BYU fans played a part in what happened is silly.

At the end of the day it is still just a game. It is not worth anybody being hurt.

NY

What a ridiculous comparison! Sorry, BYU fans rushing out onto a football field in no way poses the same security and safety risks as a bunch of drunken, fist weilding UNLV fans bent on starting a fight.

So when byu fans storm the field it's okay, but when another teams' fans do the same it's not. Yeah, that sounds about right coming from byu fans.

CORK

Typical low-class UNLV. Pandering to them for money purposes is nothing more than prostitution of the teams ans fans by the league office. Let's go somewhere else that will provide an atmosphere conducive to fairness and smart organization.

Disappointed Rebel

I have a degree from UNLV. Many UNLV fans are drunken idiots. I'm surprised this hasn't happened more often. And I expect it will only get worse.

Sober up, Rebels. Disgraceful.

Basketballogy

They'll put up walls, they'll dream up "enhanced security plans," they'll suffer the humiliation of repeated incidents like this ...

BUT!

They will not stop selling alcohol at sporting events and suffer lost revenue.

Once again, the worship of the almighty dollar rears its ugly head.

The root of all evil? Sounds like it was in this case at least.

DC

Interesting that most "security situations" involving MWC athletic events involve BYU.
Couldn't have anything to do with the school of the almighty though, never, they do no wrong and are the most well intentioned and behaved fans.......

This is why the MWC is a joke. To hold this tournament on the home court of a team is unfair. I think the Energy Solutions Arena would be a great place to hold the tournament. It is a neutral court. It might attract more Utah and BYU fans, but the players don't practice on this court every day. UNLV has this advantage every year. BYU and Utah are going to suffer the same fate every year in this tournament as long as it stays in Vegas.

Are they ushers of a basketball event or the senior citizen ballroom dance?

Class Act

It's good to see the wives of the BYU players get in the middle of the riot. Very classy.

Ken

Las Vegas obviously can't control the crowds. They shouldn't be allowed to host the tournament anymore. It's unfair to everyone else in the conference to hold it on the home floor of any of the conference teams. If we have to have a stupid tournament anyway, they should rotate locations so that none of the teams has a distinct advantage every single year.

I have a suggestion

If you don't want a brawl, don't sell beer. Oh wait, that would take away from the revenue this event raises and that's why they have it in the sleezy town of Vegas in the first place.

How many people should be arrested for DUI as soon as they get in their cars and drive off the parking lot? Now that would be a great fundraiser!

MWC official

Thanks for the help MWC. You have a major security problem with people storming an enclosed area, picking numerous fights, have had it before and said you will deal with it, and then in the midst of it you compare it to BYU fans running onto a football field to celebrate. Continues to show the ineptitude of the MWC leadership - and I use that term loosely. To compare what happened at BYU football stadium to this drunken brawl is completely stupid - was going to use the term travesty but really what happened after the game is the travesty. Deal with your problem and beef up security - oh, that's right, you can't, because according to the head of security at the game if you bring in uniformed officers to control the post game crowd that is just asking for trouble. Viva la MWC.

Unfortunately stupid fans do this kind of thing. Every BYU/Utah game has an incident as well. The real problem is hosting a league tournament which awards an automatic NCAA invite on one teams homecourt.
