You're right...as a BYU fan in upstate New York, I am doing the happy prospector dance over the mtn./Direct TV deal.
Really? | 6:16 a.m. March 14, 2008
Out-of-state Ute fans? Really?
G | 6:17 a.m. March 14, 2008
This has nothing to do with giving 'BYU' the worst timeslot. BYU was the #1 seed in the tournament, having won the regular season championship. The #1 seed has played at noon ever since the MWC has had tournaments, and before that in the WAC for exactly the reasons you mention (extra rest, less competitive games).

You know, I'm actually ok with the time slot. It gives the highest advantage to the team with the best earned record. Predictably the number one team to the play-in team was a blow out. Who wants to watch those? (well besides me, I like to watch BYU blow out other teams) CSU had little time to rest from its game yesterday, and BYU will have the best chance to scout the upcoming teams without having to worry about playing a different team in 30 minutes.

I would rather BYU won a game that I didn't get to see than watch a game that BYU loses.
Get a life | 7:36 a.m. March 14, 2008
Isn't it interesting that all BYU fans think that the whole world is picking on them. Get over it, grow up, that's the time slot awarded their seed. It has nothing to do with the fact that it is BYU.
What a silly article | 7:41 a.m. March 14, 2008
I can't believe I read this piece. WHO CARES what the timeslot is??? Tournaments must adopt some sort of schedule and it's nice to finally see that they're not bowing to the demands of a TV contract in scheduling games. BTW, Scott, KSL Radio streams very nicely any time of day. As long as The mtn. is involved I REFUSE to watch any game it presents, BYU or not.
Anonymous | 7:49 a.m. March 14, 2008
If BYU had been scheduled to play in the evening session you would have been whining about not getting enough rest, and like everything else, it would have been a conspiracy since you think the whole world is against BYU.
Hello | 7:48 a.m. March 14, 2008
Get a life-

I love your broad generalization about "all BYU fans" when two BYU fans above you have made the same statement you did. I'll make it 3. We realize that is the timeslot awarded to their seed. I don't agree with this article at all, and neither should anyone. It has nothing to do with BYU being left out of the best time slot and everything to do with rest.
nottyou | 8:08 a.m. March 14, 2008
Isn't the worst time slot for a MWC game any time slot? Who the heck has cable and CAN watch the mtn? Aren't those that currently have cable the same ones that use Old Spice and drive Hugos? Thank goodness for Directv and look for DISH to follow suit soon.
bill | 8:03 a.m. March 14, 2008
Cause they stink and no one wants to watch them.
RU | 8:18 a.m. March 14, 2008
Although the time slot is not good for viewing fans, it is the best time slot for the team. They have the advantage of getting their game over, and can begin preperations for the next game. Playing three games in three days, the more rest between games that you can get the better. This is not unique to the Mountain West. Utah St. the #1 seed in the WAC also played the early time slot. It is the best time slot to have.
Boise Coug | 8:21 a.m. March 14, 2008
Common "Get A Life" you have to look logically on this one, who has the biggest national fan base in the Mountain West, and who has broke into the national scene by breaking into the top 25. They deserve to have the later time slot just for that reason. Take a look at all the other conferences, the better teams get the better times, that's just the way it is. It's bad enough that UNLV gets to play on thier home court every year, but now they are getting the better times as well. Im not mad cause it's BYU I am mad that the best team in the conference is getting the worse treatment.
The Late Games | 8:24 a.m. March 14, 2008
Who cares about the time slot. The 2 late games were great games. I would rather get home from work and watch the 3 vs 6 and the 2 vs 7 than BYU run wild over a pathetic Colo St. team.
RE: Get a life | 8:24 a.m. March 14, 2008
I don't see any BYU fans complaining, it was the article. As far as getting a life, you're the one with nothing better to do than sit on you're computer and worry about what BYU is doing. You're the one that needs a life.
BlueCoug | 8:26 a.m. March 14, 2008
Re: Get a life

Really, I'm an avid BYU fan andm in this casem I wasn't at all concerned with the time slot. Sure it would have been nice to have the game in prime time so I could have watched it, but I would much rather see my team given the resting advantage they deserved by winning the regular season championship.

It was also nice to see the MWC making some attempt to neutralize UNLV's home court advantage by removing all of the UNLV banners and signage, and reconfiguring the seating.

When another arena becomes available in Las Vegas, the tournament should, and will, be moved to it, to make the site of the tournament fair to all teams.

And to all those saying that UNLV enjoying a home court advantage isn't a problem, I would like to see their team play both games against BYU in the Marriott Center next year.
time slot problem? | 8:41 a.m. March 14, 2008
Byu did not get the worst time slot. The #1 seed since the inception of the MWC Conference has always played the first game of the day on the Thursday of the tournament. There wasn't any conspiracy or bias against Byu just the fact that this is how the tournament is set up. For cougar fans complaining about the time slot, take a longer lunch or think up some creative way to go and see it.
Russ | 8:37 a.m. March 14, 2008
It's not about TV time slots. It's about giving the #1 see more time to rest, watch the other teams, and have more time to prepare for the next game.
Worst team Equals Worst Time | 8:49 a.m. March 14, 2008
What do you expect when the Cougs are playing the worst team in the conference? Just look at the other games and how much more competitive they are.
All BYU fans stink | 9:07 a.m. March 14, 2008
EVERY BYU fan thinks the world is out to get them, that's right, every last single one of them. If it isn't the Mountain West Conference it's the Mountain Network. If it isn't our network then it's ESPN, if it isn't ESPN it's Switzerland, or Putin, or some small-town farmer in China.

As an avid BYU fan I agree, EVERY person on the planet is out to get BYU. ALL BYU fans agree with me because we are all EXACTLY ALIKE. "Get a life" is right. I'd add: get a clue.

P.S. BYU is the first team I know of in the history of basketball to be unranked, lose to an unranked team, and then be ranked the next week. It's definitely because the world is out to get us.
Great benefits | 9:13 a.m. March 14, 2008
Actually it is a great benefit for Cougar fans in Las Vegas. They can watch the early game and then hit the casinos for some gambling and then catch a girly show in the evening.
Anonymous | 9:24 a.m. March 14, 2008
cstv available on dish has a few more games of byu to watch. Tournament was in Denver but enough people hillaried about it that it is in Las Vegas again. Denver may have gave homecourt edge to Air Force, CSU and Wyoming though.
Ute in NV | 9:37 a.m. March 14, 2008
This article is spot on. I mean, we all know that everyone is really a cougar fan and we all want to watch BYU play. Also, we all know that a 27 point blow out would be much, much more entertaining in prime time than that boring UNLV-TCU game. Oh, and don't even get me started on how boring the Utah-UNM game was. Big Yawn there! What was the MWC thinking!
re: ALL BYU fans stink | 9:44 a.m. March 14, 2008
We don't think that everybody is out to get us, we just think we deserve a little bit of respect. You and me both know that BYU is the most hated team in the MWC, but at the same time we have more fans throughout the world than any other team. Go ahead and ask any other teams fans who they want to beat in the conference and it will be BYU, everybody brings their best against us and we still found a way to win the conference. Were just upset that the only nationally ranked team in the MWC has to take the early slot. Logically that makes absolutely no sense. The best teams should get the best times no matter which team it is.
Should not have been written | 9:46 a.m. March 14, 2008
This is not a good article. The schedule is set up and it is the best for the #1 seed. They get the most time between games. This article is just an example of someone looking for things to complain about. Let's just solve the problem and have every game played at the higher seeded team's home court(like playoffs in pro sports) and have every game played at the same time. That would solve every problem. But that really sounds kinda lame to me. So keep with the schedule that they have already cause it is working and why not move the games to Arizona? They are several schools and courts there and last time I checked no school from the MWC was in AZ. And don't get me started on the mtn cause it is just a terrible set up.
Non-believer | 9:55 a.m. March 14, 2008
Don't you get tired of crying all the time. What a crybaby. WAAAAA WAAAAA WAAAAA. This reporter is barely adequate. He does nothing but cry, cry, cry.
OH BROTHER | 10:22 a.m. March 14, 2008
I give up looking at those comments all over the place. Go Cougars!!!!
re: re: ALL BYU fans stink | 10:42 a.m. March 14, 2008
"we just think we deserve a little bit of respect." that is a terrible line. BYU won the conference and deserves the easiest schedule. Therefor they play the worst teams and should get the most time in between games. BYU is getting respect in the tourney becuase they earned it with the #1 seed. They get the easiest road to the final andthe most time to rest. How is that disrespect? The timeslot was correct and you do not know what you are talking about. Oh and I am Cougar fan so don't try saying that I hate the Y like everyone else.
Curiouser and Curiouser | 10:54 a.m. March 14, 2008
Re: Get a Life

Haven't you ever heard the phrase, "Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean no one's out to get you." Chew on it for a while. More importantly, you cannot speak for all BYU fans, just as I can't speak for them. You speak only for you, which, by the way, is very telling of who you are. As far as the alleged "whining" of BYU, listen to Coach Rose. He's the team's leader. He is qualified to speak for the team, and there has been no whining there.
Embarrassed Fan | 10:52 a.m. March 14, 2008
Before BYU's sports teams will ever get the recognition they crave, the school, its fans, and the media who cover them have to quit WHINING all the time about every little thing. Playing like they did yesterday, albeit in the middle of the day, will do much more to further the cause than all the complaining in the world. The funniest part of it all is the fans who complain that everyone hates BYU, when that very complaining is what generates much of the hate. Knock it off.
Gee | 11:03 a.m. March 14, 2008
Not everyone can play at night. It's the first round. The next two games are at night. Be happy BYU is the #1 seed, no matter what time that slot is given to you to play.
Please......... | 10:58 a.m. March 14, 2008
Who wants to stay up late to see BYU trounce CSU. NM vs. Utah was a far better game. Kudos to the big wigs at the MT and the MWC.
Ham | 11:30 a.m. March 14, 2008
In response to THE ACTUAL ARTICLE, I don't really care that we played at 1 p.m. yesterday. I'd prefer BYU get the rest, than get the spotlight.

I do, however, agree that the TV situation is horrible- not just because the distribution has been so bad, but also the programming decisions, the quality and the original programs themselves.

The mtn. better grow up a bit before we put it on satellite. The two-bit operation they're running now may be even more embarrassing than our lack of exposure.
wii | 11:50 a.m. March 14, 2008
Most time to rest??? That sounds like the kind of logic that you would get from The mountain worst conference. That's suck a silly argument.

Hey, I have an idea, let's just start our own network so we can decide...oh wait that sutpid idea was already taken. Now it doesn't matter when any conference team plays, almost no one can watch!
Ponder for a Minute... | 12:21 p.m. March 14, 2008
Let's ponder for a minute...

Who do you think the Mt. West will put in the first night game? BYU or the Home Team UNLV?

Now thinking about this it makes perfect sense if they want a good crowd they are going to cater to the UNLV fans for the first round to get them to the game...

With that said....whoever is in the same side of the bracket...Utah/New Mexico in this case gets the latest game.

It's common sense with games that are not on neutral floors. New Mexico State is hosting the WAC tournament. They were in the night session...in fact the last game which wasn't as late the Utah game and USU played the second game of the day.

The article shouldn't have been written. It's one day of basketball....I'm sure tomorrow's article will talk about something else stupid that deals with the TV contract.

Isn't it time to give it a rest! It is what it is and you either put up or shut up!
Don't Censor this one | 12:27 p.m. March 14, 2008
Why does the other teams in the MWC hate BYU? Maybe we should be looking at ourselves a bit more as Y Fans? I am certain that our teams do not generate this hate for BYU. We have classy athletes that strive to show good sportsmanship and to represent the Y and Church well. Plus they are great athletes that have a tradition of winning and competing very well in many sports. Those aspects bring respect from other teams and even their fans. It is the in-your-face, holier than you Y fans that seem to belittle other teams and their fans with what is perceived as self-righteousness. I remember the elderly gentleman greeter at LES going up to Utah fans in humility and friendship and shaking their hands and welcoming them to Provo and BYU. Maybe we can be more like that guy.
CougarKeith | 12:28 p.m. March 14, 2008
I agree with "wii" for the most part. I think I will call it the "Mountain Worst Conference" from now on until they dump this TV deal or get it National on Cable and DISH NETWORK too. Anyway, doesn't matter BYU will be in the NCAA tournament but they sadly aren't going anywhere in it again this year because they can't shoot free-throws! That is why they call them "FREE Throws" because they are FREE POINTS! If you don't shoot at least 85% from the "FREE" Throw LINE you don't win in the Big Dance! If I were coach I would have each guy shooting 100 from the line every day, and if they don't make 75 of them, they shoot another 50, and must get 40! and over and over and over! Should have done this from DAY ONE!!! That is what we had to do in high school only it was 80 of 100 for the starters! We shot 92% as a team from the line! We didn't lose many games where it was a free throw shooting contest!
JayCee | 12:28 p.m. March 14, 2008
Ham is so right. The MTN deal is a fiasco. Poor circulation (not to be helped much without Dish,) Poor programming, poor scheduling, amateurish announcers etc. They have done just about everything wrong they could. Don't the schools have any oversight?
re:ALL COUGAR fans stink | 12:48 p.m. March 14, 2008
You looking at the situation from the wrong angle, I don't know if you cought "locked on sports" the other day but they had the commissioner of the MWC on, and they were grilling him on why BYU got the bad time slot, he couldn't answer so he hung up. Everybody else knows that we were disrespected except for you, it has absolutely nothing to do with getting "more rest" it's only a few hours difference. What you need to understand is that BYU played at 1 when everybody is at work, and nobody was able to watch the game, if you just look at it from a t.v. ratings standpoint, the ratings would be higher if BYU got the better slot. Don't you think the players would have liked to play when people could actually watch. As a true fan I want them to be exposed as much as possible so the rest of the nation can see what we are really about, you cant do that at noon.
Tivo | 1:10 p.m. March 14, 2008
One word: TIVO!
NCBYUFan | 1:16 p.m. March 14, 2008
Who cares what your time slot is when there is no one to watch except those in the stands. Take the time BYU and be grateful! From 2000 miles away this Mtn.tv whatever is a joke. I can only imagine what it is in Utah. I'll be a BYU fan till they plant me. Until then I'll "scrounge" a game wherever I can.
BlueCoug | 1:26 p.m. March 14, 2008
Just to reiterate: Dumb article...

ALL of the time slots are predetermined by the seeds, so it doesn't make any difference which team is seeded in which slot, as far as the television schedule is concerned.

Whining or lack therefore is irrelevant in determining when games are televised.

For once, thanks to the Mtn. (can't believe I'm giving them props) some suit in a network television office isn't setting the schedule of when and which games to televise.

Boo freakin' hoo, cougar fans. Lest you forget, this is the MWC...nobody cares/watches regardless what time any game is on.
Don Chris | 3:29 p.m. March 14, 2008
I hate the MTN. It's terrible. Bad shots and camera angles, horrible announcers, stupid, stupid, stupid. We in the Mtn West get NO exposure outside. This was the worst deal for athletics that anyone ever came up with.
SoCalCougarFan | 3:30 p.m. March 14, 2008
I'm bummed out cause I was home sick and I could have watched the game, but I didn't check the schedule until it had already been played. :-( Anyone else could certainly have recorded the game (i.e. TIVO, or DVR, or even the old fashioned VHS).

I do have to say, though, that the other games were very exciting (TCU/UNLV & Utah/NM). BTW, CSTV is now owned and operated by CBS as the CBSCS Network, on the same channel as the old CSTV. They will again be broadcasting tonights game, so we won't have to complain about the MTN not being available.

Thank you DirectTV for picking up the MTN. As a Dish Network subscriber, I am looking forward to Dish following suit, or I will sadly trade my beloved Dish for DirectTV, just in time for football season. Go Cougs!
The Invisible Mountain | 4:14 p.m. March 14, 2008
I agree with Don Chris. The announcers are mediocre at best and the angles are bad. When I work out in the morning I can usually pick up an old BYU Football game on BYUTV and the announcers and camera work are better. And those are games were played in the 80's!!!
Even if Football will be on DirectTV in the fall we still miss half the games due to exclusive rights held by The MTN. What a crock!!!
Why is the Mountain West Conference moving backward in the marketing of itself?

UNLV is a much better known basketball team on a national level. That is one reason they were on both the mtn. & CBS College Sports Network ( Formally CSTV). Besides the times were preset by the confernce based on final standings. Number 1 gets the earlier time so that they get the most rest for day 2. The same in the semi finals. Cry and whine BYU babies.
