Carroll is a great college player and deserved the award but the best furture NBA player in the conference is MeGee from Navada. He is one of the best big men in the country and will be a top NBA pick in a year or two, having seen both players in person i think MeGee is ten times the pro prospect that BYUs Plastied is. It should be a great WAC tournament, i think the best teams are Utah St and Nevada. I would love to see them play in the finals! I would also like to see Utah St. win, Nevada has been so dominate over the last few years and will be really good next year, so this is our chance to come out of the WAC as champs. in both the regular season and tournamnet because next year Nevada will be scary good although will their in state rivals UNLV.
When I saw Jaycee Carroll torch the Cougars at the Marriott Center his freshman year, I said, "How did BYU possibly miss recruiting this kid?"
He has had a great career, and is one of the hardest working and most intelligent ball players I've ever seen at USU.
It has been fun to follow his outstanding career -- and to reluctantly smile about BYU missing such a star!
In response to Cam Caldwell. What makes you think that he would have gone to BYU anyway?
(just like Carroll) is priceless!
Thank you Deseret News for covering the aggies so well. You do a much better job than the other state newspaper.
Carroll is awesome. Go AGS!
You must be kidding, right??? The DN is terrible when it comes to covering the Aggies. There is maybe one article on USU to five or six on BYU and the Utes. Don't complliment DN on what they do not do. There is one reporter that covers USUand that is it. Today there is six articles on BYU/Utah and one on USU. What newspaper are you reading?
If you look at how many people comment on USU articles compared to those of BYU and Utah, it's clear more people care about the other two schools more. It's basically only people in Logan who care about the Aggies, while people in the whole state and across the U.S. who care about the others. They do a fine job covering the Aggies. Those who cover them know their stuff. Also, BYU and Utah have BIG TIME sports, many more that just the major two, while USU really only has the two. Name one sport besides men's basketball at USU that is consistently good that deserves recognition.
Congrats JC. You are a hard worker and the best player in the state. You deserve every accolade that comes your way. Good luck to the Aggie's in the WAC tournament.
I watched J.C. play in Boise this past week. It was a pleasure to watch him play. He just let the game come to him. He never forced anything. What a great player and what wonderful youngman. He deserves all the recognition he is receiving.
Funny thing about Gary Wilkinson, he didn't make the sophmore basketball team at Bingham, which as a student and friend couldn't believe and also didn't play a game of High School Basketball. Shows what some high school coaches know. Proud of you Gary, the WAC player of the year award is yours next year!!!
to non-believer, while I agree that they do not cover the aggies near as much as byu and utah, they do a much better job than the sltrib. That was my point. I find it very ironic that the national media continually gives usu props, while the instate media does not. Point in case, the usa today, Ny times and a paper out of philidelphia all gave props to Jaycee and the Aggies. I was just commenting on how much more media coverage the deseret news gives the aggies than the salt lake trib.
The reason for the lack of responses is because most of the articles basically say Utah State won 100 - 78, Carroll had 23 points they play Fresno on thursday. Where most of the articles about they Y make stupid statments about them being a dominant team, and how they have a shot to win a national championship.
Why waste time responding to facts when you have so many false statements being stated about the lesser basketball programs in the state.
Obviously you care enough to read the article (and the comments) and even humored us with a comment. Thank you very much. What other big time sports are there to care about? Gymnastics? Water Polo? Wow, thats really big time.
This was an article on the accomplishments of the Aggies and JC, not about how many people care or not care about the Aggies.
First of all, I'm an Aggie. But to me I'm not going to complain about the lack of exposure because it all makes sense whether you like it or not. BYU and the U of U have larger markets, not just locally, but nationally as well. As a newspaper you give more attention to what the majority want to hear. So until the Aggies have as large or larger following than the Utes or BYU it will be slim pickins in the media coverage.
But enough with that. This Aggie team was able to pull themselves up by their bootstraps after a sluggish start and I wish them luck during the tournament.
This man is overrated the WAC is an awful conference he is undersized and will never make it in the NBA
Great to see a fine young man like Jaycee get the MVP. He deserved it. Now I hope USU wins the WAC Tournament so they can go to the NCAA playoffs.
Good thing it is college, and he finished the season as the best shooter in the history of college. I bet you wish he were on your team. He is 10 times better than Johnny Bryant and 20 times better than Burgess. The only two guard in the state who is even close to him is tooleson for utah valley.
You are right about Carroll being undersized but that just makes it more impressive. He scores 23 a game against players that are always taller than him and he always has their best defender on him game in game out. Teams whole defensive schemes are based on stopping him and because of that he opens the down low game. so if anything he is underrated. as for the WAC tell me one thing the MWC has done that the WAC hasnt. the answer is nothing. Last year the WAC had a top ten team the MWC is the overrated conference.
If he is such an overrated player, how come he will finish either first or second in scoring in the history of the state? He only needs like 60 points to finish ahead of Keith VanHorn for first.
