About Time! | 8:48 a.m. March 8, 2008
About time that a sense of caution and rationality prevailed here.

I remember on one of my earlier post's that someone challenged me with putting forth some evidence that our taking on nuclear waste could result in a catastrophic incident. I responded that no one seemed to be willing to address the geological factor of earthquakes and the fact that the geology of the area in which this waste is supposed to be deposited is not a stable as we've been led to believe.

Now, I'm not opposed to nuclear energy, and strongly feel it should be pursued, but I also feel that if Utah is going to store nuclear waste, let it be the waste it produces from reactors within its own borders, not that of another's State or country's waste. This sort of waste-sharing doesn't work the same way as revenue-sharing, especially since Utah is looking at not only centuries of storage, but having to repackage the waste when the containers give out (which they will), and the potential as yet undetermined problems that may yet beset us.

Let other States and countries keep the waste they created and find their own ways of dealing with it.

One could ask what the rest of Europe is doing with their waste. France has quite a few nuke plants and England has them as well. I'm not sure about the other nations there. But, Italy cannot be the only one with radioactive waste. Why isn't it pursuing the same course as the rest of Europe?

c'mon, what's the harm in letting them pay us to stick their waste in a pile somewhere? We need the money.

Unless it can be shown that Italian Nuclear waste is somehow bad in a way that our "regular" nuclear waste isn't, of course we should accept it. Our trade imbalance is growing all the time. We are headed into a resession. Utah has a budget surplus, why?????? Because there are companies such as Energy Solutions that bring in money and pay taxes to the state.

This helps relieve the burden for the rest of us and allows us to pay teachers more, which sorely needs to be done,

Please people get over your irrational fears, this nuclear waste is not extremely long lived and we have lots of deseret. Lets let some of it do us some good.

The quicker EnergySolutions fill the landfill, the sooner waste will stop being transported through Utah.

Just why would the USA even consider excepting another countries waste?

It's bad enough the US has to be the policemen of the world . . . now we need to be the garabage dump as well.

After all, it will only be there for a few thousand years.

Quite a strong nimby attiude expressed by the agency, and a touch of wannabe world political shaker upper, too.

The agency should instead specify what types and quantities of radioactive wastes are or are not acceptable within its purview. And monitor the work, within its purview, to insure that the process is done right.

Would the newspaper reporter please find out what kind of ending volume or tonnage this potential waste processing would leave us with?

..."good for our economy".... don't complain about trade deficits if you want to stop a Utah company from making money from another country.... and don't complain about a weak dollar if you've ever complained about trade deficits.... It was my understanding that we aren't talking about spent fuel rods... it was supposed to be pretty low level radioactive material.... not nearly as dangerous as a lot of stuff that is already going up and down our hwys (according to the DMN- who I trust)
Oh well ... we can't do anything else in this country (drill for oil, build refineries, build nuclear power plants) I guess when we're all living in caves then maybe the Italians can ship us some canned goods to chow down on occasionally

What we need in this country is some rational thinking. Nuclear waste is not lethal. However, the political entities that create it must deal with the disposal of it....technologically, there must be some way of storing this material on site. I am for creating a large number of nuclear power plants in this country, as well as in exploring for and developing oil fields and building more oil refineries across the nation. We are currently importing GASOLINE folks. Isn't that a wakeup call? If we let these liberals run this country much longer, we will become third world ourselves, and will have to learn to speak Russian and Chinese, because it will be over. Thank heavens there are still more sane people in this country, but the noises I am hearing are not pleasant on the democrat side of the aisle. If we are treated to an Barack Hussein Obama presidency, then look out!! Harry Reed and Nancy Pelosi with either Hillary or Barack would be a serious blow to our economy. Buckle up folks for November. Hey, some loaves of bread are just as expensive as a gallon of gasoline. Prices across the board are soaring, not just gas.
