Oh great. Now we have a new name for illegal immigrants. Since 'undocumented workers' was unsuccessful at hiding their lawbreaking status, DMN wants to try out 'economic refugees.' Let' just stick with 'illegal immigrants' and stop giving them benefits that US citizens can't even get.
I guess if illegal immigrants are merely "economic refugees", bank robbery if you REALLY need the money must be okay too! Get real.
You state that illegals are in fact, economic refugees, I am more concerned with the US citizens who are becoming economic refugees by loss of jobs good working class jobs to cheap labor. And no, I don't have to compete with them, nor my family members who have higher education degrees. US citizens are also competing with illegals for housing and social services and they have to deal with the violence illegals bring to our country, a violence that is the way of life in Mexico and other south american neighboring countries. Living in California, we lived in gated and security patrolled compounds. Do the people of Utah want that? The omnibus immigration bill passed by the Utah legislature was turned into milk-toast. John Hunstman doesn't need to veto it, it's worthless. He is going to let it pass into law, why should he anger legal Utah voters for something that has no force anyway.
first off they are not immigrants as they did not apply for that status the are ILLEGAL ALIENS, they are uninvited and many a scourge on our society. Corportations love it and so must our Governor as just go to Captiol Hill and see if you can find the white custodians that used to work there
What an un-American editorial (I was going to use different words). Is there no concern at the DN for all the legal US citizens whose lives are turned upside down by these "economic refugees" stealing their identities? I'd love to see the DN be an example and run all of their employees through the Federal Status Verification System, to show that it doesn't have a vested interest in keeping cheap labor.
This immigration stance comes from the DN who fired all the loyal paper boys who would faithfully put the newspaper on my front porch each morning and replaced them with illegals who drive by and throw the paper somewhere in the vicinity of my property. You have a lot to loose if the country removes illegal immigrants don't you Deseret News! Shame shame shame on YOU! You are the company employing the illegals aren't you.
Is this the Deseret News or the Los Angeles Times writing the editorials? Apparently the editor doesn't believe in representative government or in obeying the laws of the land.
John, it's nice that you've checked the status of all of the DN's paper delevery staff. Or is it just that you're assuming that because the person who delivers your paper before sun-up is brown and they have a job that you would never, ever do, they must be illegal?
Bigotted assumptions like this are what is "un-American" about this "discussion." Unwrap your head from the flag and think about the issue and then come to the table and let's discuss some solutions that are based on reality and not scare-tactic talking points.
Do we want Utah to become another Arizona--overloaded with the costs of illegal immigration?
Let's take care of the American people first!
Is my tithing money supporting this kind of thinking???? Economic refugees???? Are you KIDDING??? How about writing an editoral that God wants ALL of his children to obey his commandents, here are two for starters: Thou shalt not covet, and thou shalt not steal!
Being an Independent Contractor (i.e., not on anyone's permanent payroll), I wonder if the DN would mind if I put my own "economic refugee" policy in place? Just think, for $.50 each day, I can get enough newspapers to employ one illegal for the entire day. If I charged $2 for the stack and got maybe 10 or 20 illegals to work for me, I could probably make enough each day to keep them and me off the streets. Sounds like a compassionate policy to me.
The Deseret Morning News is certainly not living in the real world. They are not in tune with most Utahans as well as most Americans. Nevertheless, we're all supposed to believe that since they're the media, plus having the added benefit of being LDS Church-owned, they are the superior and correct power. They aren't, and they should be paid no attention to. If the Governor vetoes SB 81, for example, the Legislature will simply override it. I think actually this was a pretty reasonable Legislative Session. Lots of good work was done and much time and thought went into a lot of bills and the process. The Deseret Morning News has every right to weigh in, but as is becoming more typical, they're dead wrong, and their opinion should be taken only for what it's worth, which is about 25 cents.
Hello! With all due respect we already have programs (several actually) meant to provide work permits to those coming to our country to work. Does IRCA (amnesty) during the Reagan era ring any bells? Other existing laws? Any bells ringing yet?
America is one of the most liberal - meaning kind and open-minded - nations in the world, especially where immigration is concerned. Look in Europe, for instance, and see if you find any country as generous as our country is. Not even Mexico, our NAFTA partner, is as generous as we are. They do not want us down there; however, it is alright if their people flood our land and economy? Hypocrisy anyone?
We really need to look beyond the rhetoric of the far left and the far right if we are to ever find a solution worth the effort and cost to implement and test. We need legislation that will not compromise American sovereignty any more than it already has been by trade agreements like NAFTA. What we need most is politicians in office who are actually willing to work for the people. Candidates worth voting for anyone?
Remember, the US is nothing at all without her people...
This is the "compassionate conservatism" espoused by candidate Bush before becoming President and the type of totally irrational insensitivity a loud minority of bigots is becoming known for, dangerously similar to the Nazis in Germany during WWII. They also hid behind the "law and order" banner and focussed their venemous diatribes against one clearly specified people, at first!
Rah Rah Rah! Go Illegal Aliens! cheers the Deseret Morning News... You disgust me!
SB 181 should be signed into law and vigorously enforced.
Steven, don't bash John for saying all the paperboys are illegal; hispanic activists like Tony Y. (I can't remember his last name, sorry, but I do remember that is hispanic) wrote in Sunday's DMN that all anti illegal legislation is just anti-hispanic. Tony basically said all hispanics are illegal, which is not true and unfair to all those who work hard, contribute to our society, and deserve our respect. So John is doing nothing worse than Tony.
I'm surprised the DMN even posted John's conmment, any time I'ver even inferred that the DMN's pro-illegal editorial positions were caused by the fact they hired illegals, they have refused to post my comments.
I agree with the editors, Church leaders and business leaders--and I've had a major change of heart--that SB81 should be vetoed.
I used to see this country from a historical standpoint, westward expansion, the pioneers blazing the trails. The hearty settlers building up communities against harsh conditions and through several generations these communities becoming great cities.
I used to proudly salute our flag and each time I'd pledge allegience to it and sing our national anthem, these same thoughts of the pioneers of the past would be carried with the words and music.
With the call for compassion, I now see it's not about our great nation, our Founding Fathers, our constitution, our language or our culture any more.
It's about money.
Like my leaders, I've come to really love making money. The more you have, the more power you wield. And I, like my leaders, want to be powerful, and the illegals will help us get there. They're the cheap labor force upon whose backs we'll be carried to glory.
And so, I applaud and support my leaders in our call to veto the bill!
When this economy goes even further south, we'll see just how many jobs americans wont do.
Thank you for calling on the governor to veto the school district equalization bill. Why should Salt Lake City residents have their property taxes raised to pay for the Jordan District's stupid decision to split? They voted for two districts -- let them pay for the consequences instead of raiding the coffers of other districts in the county!
The governor should veto the stupid school building equalization plan. Why was existing property tax burdens not considered? So what if the building of schools falls heavily on those in the new Jordan School district? Most of those property owners already pay low property taxes and sit in nice new homes on the west side while property owners in Salt Lake City already pay the highest property taxes in the state and are going to be asked to pay even higher taxes for a new public safety building, broadway theatre, and school buildings for the new Jordan district. This is an unfair tax and should be axed.
