So the Jazz nearly coming back against the Hornets was also because of Sloan's "bad coaching" nice.

Try making sense.
Phil | 4:24 a.m. March 4, 2008
Good to come out with a win. Alot of good players on the floor last night. Dirk, should not be an ambassador to the game, he's a cheap shot artist. Boozer showed he can play D. ( if he wants to. )
FL_JazzFan | 4:55 a.m. March 4, 2008
For the person wanting to fire Coach Sloan, You have no clue what coaching is all about. Go Jazz and Coach Sloan should be coach of the year!!!
MVP = Most Violent Player | 4:58 a.m. March 4, 2008
NEWSFLASH: the Mavericks have no class.

I'm just kidding--it's not news. How long will we have to suffer Nowitzki, Cuban, and their whole crew of big-headed, cry-baby, can't-act-like-adults losers? Come to think of it, how do their fans stand them? All the Texans I have met are nice people...do they really support all this trash? Oh well--at least they are also playoff chokers.

Between the Mavericks' attitude, the Spurs' flopping, and the Rockets' arrogance, I doubt I would be an NBA fan if I were from Texas.

Thankfully I'm from the greatest city in the world, so I can happily say GO JAZZ!
DC Hilton | 6:17 a.m. March 4, 2008
Because of Jerry Sloan and his style of team basketball, the Jazz have been my favorite sports team for a decade now, even though I live in DC. I have an idea, if you all don't want Sloan, then we'll give you the Wizard's coach Eddie Jordan for him. Seriously, anyone who hates Sloan hates basketball itself.
lamonte | 7:09 a.m. March 4, 2008
DC Hilton - I also live in DC, or more accurately, the DC area (Fairfax County) and I have maintained my love for the Jazz for the 20 years that I have lived here (it started with my living in the Salt Lake valley for 11 years in the late 70's to the late 80's.) We should start an eastcoast fanclub!? And yes, Jerry Sloan, should have been named Coach of the Year, many times in the past, if not this year. Anyone who wants to get rid of him obviously hates the Jazz.
Bah | 7:15 a.m. March 4, 2008
I've watched the Jazz play Dirk for a long time. I don't think that was intentional; just bone-headed. Remember when Malone gave David Robinson that concussion? That was the first thing that came to mind. Everyone outside of Salt Lake thought Malone did it on purpose (he didn't).

Dirk was just trying to stop an easy two, was out of control, and wound up sending our guy to the floor. That's just basketball; stuff like that happens.
DC Fan | 7:30 a.m. March 4, 2008
Hey, another DC fan here. Being away from Salt Lake isn't it remarkable how bitter many of the fans in Utah seem to be. It is nearly intolerable to read the posts that continue to rant and rave instead of enjoying the season. Seriously, the fans are so spoiled back there and we see that because of the Wizards. The Wiz are representative of most teams and we are fortunate to be Jazz fans. Only Detroit, Chicago, Houston, San Antonio, Los Angeles, and Miami have enjoyed championships during the past 20 years. That is six teams. Most of the NBA world should be bitter, only their teams not only fail to win a championship, but they stink too.

BTW- I am a Sloan Hater Hater...Become a Nuggets fan Sloan Hater.
Sloan Admirer Basketball Lover | 7:41 a.m. March 4, 2008
I'm tired of all the Sloan haters of the world and wish they would go become Clippers fans as thatis what the Jazz would be without a Coach like Sloan. At least since the Jazz started winning again in Jan most of the weak minded, uniformed have gone in hiding while they look for another supposed weak target or another loosing streak.

I too am an east Coast Jazz fan who had the fortune of seeing John Stockton's first season w/ season tickets with my grandpa. I was there for all the finals games, saw Malone get the scoring title, Stocks steals and assist title in person before moving to the East coast. And now realize how lucky and spoiled the Jazz fans really are. I just can't bring myself to buying season Hawks tickets and no team has rebiult as quickly as the Jazz. A first class organization run the right way with a solid plan, great hall of fame coach and very good up and coming players. Not another team in the league that I'd want to be a fan of.
Sloan on SI | 7:48 a.m. March 4, 2008
I just read on SI.com that Pat Riley is the least liked coach. Followed by, no surprise here, Jerry Sloan. No wonder nobody wants to play in Utah. Its not the city, it's Jerry Sloan. Get Hoffa I say.
MLR | 7:50 a.m. March 4, 2008
I have been one of the critics of Sloan and will flat out say that his post game interview after last nights great game, was very positive and great too see. This man has alot of great attributes that way too many others don't. His work ethic, honesty, and dedication are just a few. When I critisize Sloan I only vent to try and reach perfection because of my love for the game and the Jazz. I realize I am no more than an arm chair quarterback, couch potato but thats what it is. I can't however leave without posting one critical comment---Please try to find more playing time for Brewer, Harpring, Korver and Memo, given nightly match-ups. I would like to see Brewer and Korver spend some time together on the floor, both are big enough to play small forward against certain match-ups. Go Jazz.
Sloan Fan | 7:49 a.m. March 4, 2008
Ive followed the Jazz over many years as well as many players because of Jerry Sloan. My one disappointment in life is that he can't also coaching our federal politicians to instill a measure of his own values and integrity.
Anonymous | 7:52 a.m. March 4, 2008
I have two comments:
1. I thought Derron Williams play terrific at time, but what is this so-called allstar doing making lazy cross court passes, and getting the ball knocked away from behind on a fast break. He just goes lazy and casual too often--he can fix that, it's just a discipline thing.
2. If teams (and the NBA) want to fix the "lack of intensity" thing in the NBA, then reduce the number of games in the season. Playing 4 games in 6 nights guarantees lackluster, lazy, inconsistent play.
Whiners | 7:54 a.m. March 4, 2008
Why do we have to call every team a bunch of dirty cry babies? Sounds like we are doing the crying. Golden State might have fit that bill, but not Dallas. Dallas hardly plays defense. Yes, Dirk gave a hard a foul, but he was just trying to prevent a score. You can't blame him for that. I think the grabbing of the neck and AK's fall were unintentional.
Joe | 8:02 a.m. March 4, 2008
A DC-area Jazz fan club is a great idea. Living in SW Wyoming, the Jazz were - and remain - my NBA 'home team' now living in No VA. GO JAZZ!!!
sloan critic | 8:15 a.m. March 4, 2008
I must hand it to him, by and large his rotations were good.

Matt Harpring's continuing shot bricking of late concerns me however.
Time out | 8:17 a.m. March 4, 2008
The only problems I have ever had with coach Sloan: (1)Why-when we have a 20 point lead- do we not call time out before it gets down to 3 or less. Surely someone on the bench can fill momentum shifting better than that. (2) If Boozer refuses to step up and play defense rest his lazy butt.
re: DC Fan | 8:23 a.m. March 4, 2008
None of those teams you cited had the same coach for 20 years.
MinnyJazzFan | 8:36 a.m. March 4, 2008
Why stop at a DC fan club, why not an out of state fan club? I have been a Jazz fan since living there in Utah in the mid 90's. Now after living in Seattle and Minneapolis, and watching those teams not play team ball and rely upon 1 star to win, I am so excited when I get to watch "boring" team Jazz basketball.
Bad Writing | 8:44 a.m. March 4, 2008
Come on, Deseret News, you can do better than this - "Utah, in fact, shot 18-of-18 from the line in the last quarter and converted each of its final 18 freebies". A little redundant, maybe...?
NBA CDN | 8:45 a.m. March 4, 2008
The Jazz are a class act. The players seem to maintain decorum yet know what it takes to win. Hard work seems to be the way. Boozer who is maybe 6' 8" has to cover 7 footer Dirk and does a decent job and in fact steals from him once or twice. The coach expects that and he is not afraid to bench the straters when they do not produce. The Jazz are so enjoyable to watch when they are winning. Poetry in motion.
I noticed that when we were coming back on the Pistons and on the Hornets Boozer was on the bench. The team has rebuilt so that when the coach has to make the tough call we still have quality players who can go in and hustle and make up for the starters lack of hustle. Would be nice to see more plays for Korver to either 3 ball it or cut for the hoop. Okur was the man against Dallas, inside offense and awesome defense from this big guy.
LA Jazz Fan | 9:05 a.m. March 4, 2008
This is my first ever post. It is refreshing to see African American players on the LA playground proudly wearing Utah Jazz basketball shirts. Not everyone is a slam dunk or highlight reel addict, there are many people who love team basketball. Go Jazz and go Coach Sloan.
Re SI | 9:07 a.m. March 4, 2008
I read the same article. Sloan is tied for second with 12% of the vote with Skiles and Isaiah. It seems with Rileys 28% and the other big three 36% combined that64% of the vote. Sloan is to hard on his players. If he would mellow he sure could teach is knowledge of the game.
re:SI | 9:11 a.m. March 4, 2008
Sloan is clearly one of the most disliked coaches in the league, the players have spoken.

Sloan has a nice regular season record, but he has been pretty bad in the playoffs during his entire carreer. Sloan gets alot of credit for doing what every other coach in the league does, which is, begin tough and trying to get his players to play hard...big deal, everyone coach does that and they still manage to watch gamefilm.
Moto X | 9:13 a.m. March 4, 2008
We were mowing down the Mavericks until D-Will starting walking the ball up the floor. As soon as he starts doing that our offense usually stagnates and slows down--which it did. That allowed Dallas back into the game. Fortunately we were perfect from the line in the 4th or it could have been a different outcome.

Lucky we were playing Dallas who has no defense of their own. Don't get me wrong D-Will had a spectacular game last night and I think he is awesome but he is the motor of this team and if he does not run then his team mates feel no urgency to run/cut which is how this team slices up opponents. Early offense/rhythm shots/back cuts before the defense is set is the essence our success.

I doubt Dirk meant to hurt AK--Dirk is a pansie and a poor defender--that is what makes it an obvious mistake--he is the antithesis of physical.

Great win but all our offense and scoring covers up the underlying weakness--defense--giving up 110 to the Mavs here. Ouch. Our offense/FT shooting will not be that great every night. I hope this YOUNG team learns to get some stops soon.

Go Jazz!!!
AgBoy94 | 9:17 a.m. March 4, 2008
There will come a time in the near future when Sloan will be gone and Miller will sell the time, and the Utah Jazz will turn into a clone of every other team in the NBA (except San Antonio): 1-2 star players that play one-on-one basketball, a coach that is a puppet for the 1-2 star players, and ugly basketball. Then you'll regret not enjoying these times.
Anonymous | 9:22 a.m. March 4, 2008
we thought that foul against ak was really chicken and the league should pass a law that the chicken player who hurts someone on perpose should miss as many games as the hurt player. i think sloan looked away and missed it and i wonder if he would have acted like he was mad. could not believe how calm every one was as poor ak was laying there is great pain.
re:motoX | 9:43 a.m. March 4, 2008
In every blog you write you try to make it a point that the jazz are sooo "YOUNG" (all caps) when in reality they are not that young:

Harpring 31
Okur 28
AK 27
Boozer 26
Korver 26

Williams and Brewer are young players, but every team mixes young and old. I agree with you that they are still learning, but they don't have forever to get it going just because they are still in their late 20's, this is the PRIME for most of our guys, not everyone plays as late as Stockton and Malone.
re: agboy94 | 9:39 a.m. March 4, 2008
LHM will never sell the team.
You can take that and 1200/oz gold to the bank.
bergstro | 9:45 a.m. March 4, 2008
Bay area Jazz fan checking in. Ya'll don't realize how incredible Sloan is until you have to watch the spastic version of Nelly ball the Warriors are playing. Every other possesion I think "Sloan would yank your butt to the bench after a shot like that!" It is truely horrible basketball to anyone that is more a fan of the game than a fan of big shorts and the slam dunk. Sloan's offense and discipline are things of beauty. One day he will be gone and you will all wish for the good old days when we become a Western Conference bottom dweller.
Anonymous | 9:48 a.m. March 4, 2008
Lets face it we all live in fear AK is going to break like a porcelain doll. Physically he is so frail he just can't take a hard foul. Dirks foul looked bad, and it was fairly hard, but when you watch the replay a few times I think most players would have been able to get up and play.

AK's strength, or lack thereof, is why he flails and flops every time he trys to post or drive into the lane. Any opponent dominates him down low. When he scores in close it is always off a baseline cut where his man loses him on defense--like last night.

Poor guy is a power forward wannabee with a skinny guard body.

Hope he is not hurt to bad though so he can get back to help his team.
Moto X | 9:53 a.m. March 4, 2008
They are the 3rd youngest team in the league by average age. That would mean there are 27 teams that are older by average age.

Great point you made though. Lets all pretend they are not relatively young by NBA standards. They are a veteran team with tons of playoff experience and 5+ years of playing together with this group.

Wow, thanks for your insight. You have helped us see this Jazz team for the real geriatric squad they are.

Anonymous | 10:02 a.m. March 4, 2008
Milsap needs to take ak back to la. for some down home cookin' to put some meat on his bones!
Nowtizki = dirty play | 10:00 a.m. March 4, 2008
Dirk should be fined and suspended for at least a game after that very dangerous play. He had no chance of making a play there. AK had faked him up in to the air on one side of the basket and then was dribbling to get a dunk on the other side of the basket. There was no way that Dirk was going to reach way back behind himself and block that shot. That put AK in a very precarious position and as a result AK is on the shelf.
re:moto X | 10:16 a.m. March 4, 2008
Not meant as an arguement, and I simply pointed out that this team (for the most part) is in thier prime RIGHT NOW.

The average age point is fine, and I already knew it, but when you are dealing with a sample of 12 and you do not have a scrub or 2 in thier mid to late 30's it can be somewhat misleading.

Look how quickley Dallas' windown is closing, and I'm telling you it creeps up on you, particulary with Booze and AK with injury issues.

Yes the jazz are "somewhat" young, not arguing, but it isn't a large factor in the jazz on the verge of missing or making the playoffs.

Please cut the sarcasm, you are using the geriatric, not me.

what if | 10:11 a.m. March 4, 2008
What if it were completely reveresed and it was AK making a play and pulled down Dirk hard. AK would have been assessed a flagrant 2 foul and I am sure loud mouth Cuban would have cried and whined to get AK suspended.
phil Re:moto X | 10:13 a.m. March 4, 2008
Moto X. Did you see that Sloan is one of the most disliked coaches in the league. I thought you could take a minute and spin this into Sloan being the most loved coach in the history of the NBA.

Flagrants should be automatic ejections.
None of the 1-2 scale.

re:SI, Clearly the uneducated has spoken. Let's face it Riley and Sloan are old school coaches who don't let players coast and do anything they want. And those who don't like them are the thugs who thinks the world owe's them something. And when a coach treats them like anyone else they go to their corners and cry.
Sloans playoff record is not bad. The thing that your to stupid to think about is that Utah rarely buys a championship like L.A and many of these big market teams. For years they had Stockton and Malone and little else. We went to the finals when we finally had someone else decent in Hornacek. A few years ago we had really nobody and that team won 42 games, no other coach in the league would have done that period! The system in Utah is talked about by coaches and players as difficult to stop, Utah is physical and never give's up, a team takes on the personality of their coach. So let's see we've been one of the winningest franchises in basketball, all while not having the big bucks. Clearly Sloan doesn't know what he's doing. Please!!!!
WHAT??? | 10:33 a.m. March 4, 2008
Oh come on people, it was totally a flagrant foul by Dirk! Dirk has been jealous of AK since they played against each other at the age of 15 years old. AK always won the MVP, dunk contests, player of the year, etc. Dirk was always second man on the totem pole. Then to top it off, AK goes and wins the summer championship with Russia and was named Euro player of the year last week. Dirk hates AK, they are not friends, believe me! Anytime you foul another player the way Dirk did, you are always going to hurt them in someway. Dirk knew exactly what he was doing. I hope and pray that AK can recover in time for the playoffs, because if he doesn't, the Jazz are going to have an even tougher road ahead. Point is, they desperately need AK. Our prayers are with you AK!!!
re: anon @ 10.24 | 10:27 a.m. March 4, 2008
The correct spelling is "you're".
Who is the stupid one now?

I am tired of hearing all of the old and tired sloan lover defenses: not enough money, jordan, no hornacek. Enough already. What about the time before and after that period?

Sloan did great against the mavs. However he has blown more than his fair share. Let's not even talk about "not giving up" . . .
re:anonymous | 10:31 a.m. March 4, 2008
"utah rarely buys a championship" last time I checked utah has never won a championship.

Energy Solutions is sold out nearly every night and the jazz have had a payroll at or above the league average. Don't tell me the jazz have not won a championship because they don't spend money.

You like Sloan, I do not, but everything else you said in the blog was quite rediculous about large markets buying championships... I don't know if you know this, but there is a salary cap and restricted free agency.
Real Jzz Fan | 10:43 a.m. March 4, 2008
It's refreshing to read comments from out-of-state jazz fans, who don't take the Jazz for granted and who appreciate what they do. The Jazz are, in fact, a very young team and are still learning how to play together. All who are hating on Jerry Sloan need to move to Denver or Sacramento or somewhere and watch what basketball would be like without order and discipline. And while doing that, have fun not ever making the playoffs. Jerry Sloan is one of the greatest coaches of all time. Go Jazz!

RE: Time OUt 8:17
Normally I would agree about Booz not playing defense and maybe even about the timeout. But did you even watch the game last night or are you just runnign your mouth today. The lead was at 21 in the first half when the Mavs made a little run and it got down to about 15 Sloan called a timeout. What do you expect Sloan to call a time out EVERY time the mavs made a small run. That would have burned all of the timeouts in a very short period of time. At some point the players have to learn to put the fire out while it is still small. You can't blame Sloan that the players did not stop the little runs.
On Booz defense last night: you are calling him out on that?? Did you not see the two late steals on Dirk that helped seal the game. Did you not see Dirk visibly frustrated that he couldn't get anything done? Most nights I would agree about Booz's D but last night he played great D and you are saying Sloan should have benched him. Real intelligent!
RE: SI | 11:16 a.m. March 4, 2008
Okay people, present all of the facts. Along with Sloan on the least liked list is none other than the almighty Phil Jackson, who everyone on this post says is the greatest. Oh, and also, Sloan is also on the most liked list of coaches. Please, do not distort the facts for your gain. Give all of the data to complete the picture.
