Whoever posted that nickname...Hillarious! U of Boohoo, that is great. The Utes are a bunch of crybabies, but hey at least they keep up on BYU basketball.

And really the U can beat the Y on a neutral floor? There is a real smoky haze around that campus isn't there, and I don't think it's the inversion.
MWC Guy | 1:26 p.m. Feb. 27, 2008
Once again, it appears that BYU will win the conference crown because of a missed call at the end of a game. Last year it was the Wyoming assualt of UNLV's Wink Adams with a second left and the game tied. No foul was called and the game ended with Wyoming winning in overtime. This year it was the unbelievable no-call on Trent Plaisted at the end of the overtime and BYU up by 1. The TV announcers ran the video over and over again and remarked that guys have gone to jail for less violent action then occurred (although it was definitely unintentional on Plaisted's part) and also caled it a beheading.

There's nothing to guaranty that Adams would have made either of the free throws he should have received in the Wyoming game (although he leads the MWC in free throw percentage) or that New Mexico would have made the tying or winning free throw last night, but it sure worked out for BYU both years, they won the regular season last year by one game, and it looks like that will happen again this year. It sort of neutralizes UNLV's advantage in the tournament.
RE: Too Funny | 1:45 p.m. Feb. 27, 2008
I am puzzled why a Duke City native would make such a generalized, stereotypical statement about Albuquerque. I am a Cougar fan living in ABQ and, like any decent-sized city, there is crime and violence here. There are also some great, down-to-earth, and principled people living in ABQ of all races, religions, cultures, etc. I do agree with you about Lobo fans. I know some spirited Lobo fans who are fun to compete with. I know other Lobo fans who are downright rude and mean. I won't be taking my sons to any Lobo games in the PIT anytime soon.

I didn't see any contact much less a foul on the last play of last night's game. Plaisted was hammered on the play where he received 2 foul shots. Realizing that all of the referees are agianst us, I am sure that they would have taken every opportunity to call a foul had they thought it was even close. We are champions again and will remain champions. If we were in the PAC-10, we would have won that conference also.

Ref: Lobo Jasp
Your boys are a good team. A couple of questionable calls went your way.... a couple went our way. Maybe Plaisted did foul, then again what about Cummard fouling out with only four fouls???? Two good teams a little luck...maybe...Overtime.... you can't ask for better on game.....officiating....always a different story.....but a good game none the less. My real concern is that you seem to be coming down with a mild case of Uteitis. Take action now to avoid the nashing of teeth,.... that's a full blown case. Permanently scars the lips and tongue and very possibly the ability to reason. Best of Luck in the future.
Cougar Fan | 3:01 p.m. Feb. 27, 2008
What a game and what a win. I can't think of a better way for BYU to win this game. They came back late in the game in a hostile environment, two of the starters out in OT, and on top of that Trent Plaisted makes the game winning free throws. Way to shut up all the critics BYU!!
Cougar Fan | 3:10 p.m. Feb. 27, 2008
Plaisted Stepped up at clutch time and took care of business. Everyone always doubts this athletic un selfish player ... and he showed everyone that he can be a leader. BYU played a heck of a game and fought hard. Even though Cummard shouldn't have been out of the game, the team still won. Keep it up Cougars!!
LOBO505 | 3:08 p.m. Feb. 27, 2008
Yes it was bad and disgusting that some fans were throwing things on the court. But what about Plaisted throwing a clothsline on a 6'-1 point guard? If you still can't see it just visit ESPN.com and the MTN. web site because they both have video of it. On The MTN. web site you can compare the called foul with 5.7 seconds left that sent Plaisted to the line and the non call clothsline with .1 seconds that send Gary to the floor. You tell me which was more obvious and which was "Phantom". Yeah, and about the "Phantom" 5th foul on Cummard, just look at Provo's Herald newspaper even they said it was in deed his 5th foul. Your right The Truth what about the Ref for not giving Rose a Tech ater he laid into him, and when Alford complains about a call he gets it quicker than the visiting team?
can'tblameonrefs | 3:14 p.m. Feb. 27, 2008
To all of you who complain that there was a foul on Plaisted at the end: go back and look at all the missed calls that should have been on New Mexico. Also tell your big time player to make some free throws! Way to go Plaisted!
No Foul | 3:37 p.m. Feb. 27, 2008
For everyone that thinks there was a foul at the end...THERE WASN'T. Not one of the three officials signaled a foul (that would be a raised arm with a closed fist) The only official that did anything was the one on the baseline who signaled that the ball was off BYU and that it would be UNM's ball. It was the TV announcers who said there was a foul, and we know that the TV guys especially from the MTN are perfect. There was no foul, and they only put time on th clock so they didn't get murdered on their way out.
what are the odds? | 3:37 p.m. Feb. 27, 2008
I'm shocked Plaisted made his free throws. He must be "fully invested"?
Or is that the wrong sport?
Comfort/Discomfort | 3:41 p.m. Feb. 27, 2008
Comfort knowing as a Ute fan our worst basketball season still exceeds one win! Times will get better. Discomfort being a fan of the MWC knowing we will not get the credibility we deserve until someone other than Utah can win games in the dance. BYU, New Mexico, UNLV please do us all a favor and win in the dance the conference needs it as do you. Go Utes!!!
To Cougar | 4:17 p.m. Feb. 27, 2008
You are so clever you little Ute. Posing as an ignorant Cougar fan, trying to make cougar fans look bad. Nice try little Utie. Keep up the good work and good luck with that NIT bid.
UNLV FAN | 4:23 p.m. Feb. 27, 2008
To Comfort/Discomfort

Why indicate that only Utah has one in the Big Dance in recent memory when UNLV went to the Sweet 16 just last year and now are 2nd in the MWC despite losing 4 starters? UNLV may not have the MWC best record but they are the best in the conference as they match up better nationally than BYU and have a better coach. There will be no Marriott Center to protect them. Was Danny Ainge the last Cougar to win a tourney game? Wow, makes one wonder where all this Cougar pride is coming from.
BYUICOUGARFAN | 4:56 p.m. Feb. 27, 2008
I'm sure glad someone finally mentioned that the NM guard slipped and slid across the floor before he even shot the ball that led to the so-called no call on Plaisted. A traveling call should have been called before the rebounding incident even happened. Let's look at the whole play people. Maybe the refs didn't call a foul because they knew they missed a bad travel. Go Cougs
Rico | 5:26 p.m. Feb. 27, 2008
Let's try to be realistic here.
-BYU is a decent team, but Plaisted isn't enough of a presence inside to make a lasting run in the NCAA tournament
-UNM has a decent team that lost a very close game at home in OT
-Fans cheering, booing, yelling at players and coaches: good fans. Fans throwing debris onto the floor because they think a call was wrong (or they're mad they lost): bad fans.
-Utah has talented players and a decent coaching staff, but they haven't been consistent this year (next year will be different, I expect)
-For all of the Cougar fans (me included) who are enjoying the 'view from the top of the mountain:' isn't it the football and basketball teams at the top of the mountain while we all look on? We have nothing to brag about - the players do.

Eugene | 6:20 p.m. Feb. 27, 2008
Most of these comments can be classified as simple knee-jerk juvenile reactions to a great game. The Pitt is one of the toughest places to play in the nation due to its great teams and ferociously-supportive fans. BYU and NM both played a great game and neither deserved to lose; however, the really good teams find ways to win the close games. The Cougs proved their muster tonight.
Steve | 6:35 p.m. Feb. 27, 2008
The MTN broadcast of this game has to be one of the worst in an already poor history of sportscasting. The announcers, especially color commentator Bollwinkel, were extremely biased in favor of New Mexico. The camera work was so bad it must have been handled by local high school students. And the post-game coverage was really poor, with only one analyst who wanted only to talk about one no-call that would have favored UNM. It is natural that other schools would be cheering for the league leader to lose, but the MWC and the MTN should be especially careful about remaining neutral, particularly since BYU always brings the best TV ratings and has the biggest following in the conference.
Laughable | 6:34 p.m. Feb. 27, 2008
It was a foul at the end and should have been called as such. I am neither a Ute fan, and especially not a wonderful Y fan. The commentators called it right, and after about 12 replays from all angles it was without a doubt committed before the red light went off. Just admit it Y fans, after all your religous membership should keep you from telling little white ones. And as far as the Lobo fans go, it has been that way forever so get over it. They are like fans in a lot of schools accross the nation. We may not agree but that's how it is.
To UNLV Fan | 6:35 p.m. Feb. 27, 2008
I do not disagree the problem is no one but Utah has done it consistently. Especially BYU, and New Mexico. I am not bagging on anyone. I like you feel the MWC is tougher than it is ever given credit for. I just want it represented well. Good luck and do us all a favor and kick the trash out of BYU in the tourney
TCU by 10 | 7:37 p.m. Feb. 27, 2008
utah stinks and will be beat big time by TCU, Wyoming, CSU and UNLV. The yewts will finish the season 0-8 after they lose the fist tourney game. How bad can they stin? I didn't know that it could be this bad!

Hey Ute fans, the TCU game is over. Time to go to your own message board and talk about the big win. Oh, sorry, another loss, I guess you'll have to stay here and continue talking about how lucky BYU is.

BYU wins the MWC and all of a sudden they could win the Pac10 and garner a top 5 ranking. Are you people serious? Maybe you should worry about getting past the first round of the NCAA tourney this year. And what makes you think the Pac10 wants your school and your 28 year old players? Don't flatter yourselves. We already have a couple of bottom feeders--no need to add another one.

The only thing worst than a sore loser is an ungracious winner.

These BYU fans responses are funny. What they are saying is if a foul is committed, but not called, the foul never happened. That is a pretty silly way of looking at it."

Well there my silly friend, it is the way it is written in the rulebook. The player plays, the coaches coach, and the referees call the game.

The official stat book show how many fouls were called, and that is that---

You "FEEL" a foul should have been called. Should it have, like the 200 plus missed calls per game that could have been called -- maybe? was it?

Mystery ended.

Se, you as a fan do not know why a call was not called, we can guess, we can play with it telling it to our parents, why "it isn't fair", but it's the way it is.

I have been watching referees call various levels from Y ball to Jr. Jazz to Jr High to HS, JC, to D1, to NBA, to international, and What I know in 50 years of it, is if the ref blows a whistle -- it's a foul.
Dhich Stake??? | 11:31 p.m. Feb. 27, 2008
Someone told me that if the Utes don't make the NCAA or the NIT, the U of U will be participating in a Stake Ball Tourney.

Do we have any dates or times, or locations. Some of my frat buddies and I wanna go, take a road trip, buy tons of supplies and get crazy.

When do the pairings come out?
I lke the Ute Approach | 11:33 p.m. Feb. 27, 2008
If it's a tight game, lets say a three point difference (Utes down by three), and Utah has the ball, to take the situation out of the hands of the officials, they opt to go for the 2 point play, taking the pressure off of the other team coach officials and losing by one point.

They have nothing to prove. Everyone watching and reading the next day understands they could have done it if they chose.

Utes have class, and speaking of class, I gotta get running if I am going to make my astronomy lab.
Well | 11:39 p.m. Feb. 27, 2008
"BYU will win the conference crown because of a missed call at the end of a game."

Why play the season? Jus bring any team up, play the 24 second play, miss the call, hand the trophy.

I cannot let it slip by that Utah would have won the conference if the had won all of their games,

How did BYU trick them into losing so many games???

The KSL radio announcers said something about the fact that Plaisted should dedicate the last two free throws to his wife because all of the inappropriate things the Lobo fans were yelling about his wife. Can anyone tell me what the announcers were referring to?
blown call at the end | 12:01 a.m. Feb. 28, 2008
I'll tell you why there was no call at the end...the ref watching the play thought the game was over, and therefore didn't call the foul. If a ref doesn't call a foul, they can't review it and call the foul after words. Of course what Plaisted did SHOULD have been called for a foul...heck my roomate is a HUGE BYU fan and he said that that was a cheapshot on Plaisted, so not all BYU fans are unreasonable. Anyways, I'm not here arguing that BYU should have lost, they won at the Pit which is very though and kudos to Plaisted for stepping up and hitting those free throws at the end.
Idahoan | 10:35 a.m. Feb. 28, 2008
To those who say that the foul that put Plaisted on the line with the tying and winning free throws, BYU still would have gone on top scorewise because Tavernari rebounded Plaisted's miss and put it in. Regarding the no-call on New Mexico's end, I don't know whether a foul was committed or not. I thought it looked like it could have been a foul. And I did wonder if there was a travel by the player who shot the ball before the crazy scramble.

I didn't get to see the whole game, but what I saw was intense!
