Delusional Cougar? | 9:17 a.m. Feb. 27, 2008
No, you are a Ute fan trying to make cougar fans look silly.

No, we are not going to the final four. No, Cummard and Plaisted will not be lottery picks and no, this team does not rival the best MW or WAC teams of all time.

But yes, this team is going dancing, yes, this team beat your Utes twice and yes, your Utes will be lucky to make the NIT this year or next.

If you want to talk sports smack with BYU, stick to the four events at which you are better than us: 1) balance beam, 2) uneven bars, 3) floor exercise and 4) vault.

RR | 9:28 a.m. Feb. 27, 2008
I love the comments! I love the Cougar fans putting ute fans in their places, good job guys! I never thought BYU could go through the conference with only 2 losses, that is incredible! That is often what football conference champions have, and they play half the games of bball.

I have a good friend who is a big UNM fan, and they all hate BYU, just like he does. It's always fun to ask him, "so, did you hear about the UNM/BYU game?" We can also ask ute fans, "so, did you hear about the BYU/u game?" Love it!

How is Utah the hottest team if they've lost their last two games?

Great game Cougs! Way to pull that one out in the clutch against a very hostile crowd!
re: Conference Champs?? | 9:35 a.m. Feb. 27, 2008
No Quality wins? Well then that would mean that BYU got two un-quality wins from a very un-quality Utah team. There is only one thing worse than a sore looser, and that is a sore looser who relies on poor excuses to justify a poor season by his/her team.

If I don't recall, New Mexico was 19-1 at home. New MExico is a tough place to play and BYU went in and won in the clutch.

Please tell me 1 top 25 team that Utah has defeated! BYU on the other hand defeated Louisville and hung with #1 UNC. I hope that BYU plays the Utes in the tournament. I will love to read the poor excuses after BYU defeats Utah for the third time this season. (I'm sure that the refs will be bad or the game clock will be off or something that just happen to give the victory to BYU) I love it!! You Utah fans just make me laugh!!
Officiating | 9:32 a.m. Feb. 27, 2008
Let me just point out that if any NM fans want to whine about officiating and the "no call" at the end of OT....then let's start counting ALL the bad calls during the game, if you do, I suspect you might not hear from them again!
A leage with class, and no class | 9:42 a.m. Feb. 27, 2008
I remember when the Utes were playing at UNLV a year or two ago and were beating up on UNLV and their fans through some stuff on the court that delayed the game. If I remember right, it was a beer bottle or something that actually caused a bit of a cut on the back of a Ute player's head, or came awfully close to doing so anyways.

Point is, it's a tragedy that some of the schools in the conference have such classless fans to do such things as throwing stuff on their teams courts or at opposing players, then coming down to the court after the game to taunt them even more.

I'm glad to know that as obnoxious as some fans from both BYU and Utah, that neither school seems to produce fans as low-class as UNM and UNLV have demonstrated over the years, even when the officiating is bad.

It's good to know that most of the coaches in the league still have more class than their fans. I think SDSU's Fisher, Utah's Boylen, UNLV's Kruger, and BYU's Rose are all examples of great coaches with great class and it reflects on their players.
Need More Quality Wins | 9:45 a.m. Feb. 27, 2008
I agree that the BYU needs more quality wins to gain more respect (in Bball and Fball). Maybe they can get the weak stuff off their schedule like the mulitple games vs. Utah. They did it vs. Weber and USU now we just need the Utes off the normal schedule.

BYU deserves better opponents that take the game seriously and can compete in the top eschlion of the confernce. When the Utes get serious again, then they could reschedule them... just for old times sake. :)
GBTHECOACH | 9:49 a.m. Feb. 27, 2008
I am a huge BYU fan and loved the win. That said, even I think we got lucky. That was probably a foul at the end of the game. The Lobos had tons to play for and probably deserve a trip to the dance. I just think we need to be a little more humble in victory. 2 good teams had a war and the best one probably won but the probable foul does leave a bit of a bitter taste in my mouth. I would sure be mad if I was a Lobo fan this morning.

Can't wait to see the review and it will show the replay this Saturday on channel 11. Boy, can't wait to see a little more games next year on the mtn on DIRECTV! Why do we see those utes and nm or any of those aliens on this board. Why even mentioned responding those brown noser looking in our posts. GO COUGARS!
Wow | 9:55 a.m. Feb. 27, 2008
That was amazing!

Go BYU!

That is how championships are won. The team just gutted it out. A few more games to go.

Go Cummard!

The best player in the league put his whole into the game until he had to watch it from the bench (Crazy that they could miscount and give him 5 fouls, when he had only committed 4).

Go Trent!!!

Funny how teams in the league depend on you missing free throws to give them a chance. Oh, the irony. Fouling you at the end of the game, didn't win it for UNM, and likely is the definitive moment for a championship season. Nothing the opposition could do mattered. With your own team depending on you, you came through for them.

Awesome win! Awesome season!

Controversial Wins | 9:58 a.m. Feb. 27, 2008

i love how somehow the utes and their fans are involved in a game they didn't even play in, all the byu fans are rubbing it in?? remember, byu hasn't won a tourney game for like 20 years and in those twenty years the yewts have gone to the national championship, the elite eight twice, the sweet sixteen twice and a bunch more tourney appearances, I could go back 40 years and still have more if you want.. byu fans, you can have your two years of semi glory for now, I don't mind, enjoy. i want a byu fan to argue with that without having to resort to only saying that you shouldn't look back in the past. I will just wait and see what you have.

Cougars are dominating the MWC and will for a loooong time. Yewt fan can't stand it, but it is true. All of the yewt fans are turning blue with envy. This game showed that BYU has what it takes to win the tough game. They are conference champions again! Kool-Aid.
LoboJasp | 10:27 a.m. Feb. 27, 2008
Lobos lost the game due to poor 3-point shooting. We Beat BYU in almost every other Stat. JR Giddens proved, once again, that he is the best player in the MWC. He will be in the NBA next year, prepairing to Dunk over Plaisted; like Granger does to Bogut. Go Lobos. We'll get 'em in the tournament. (Yes, the officiating was terrible, on both sides of the ball) (No, Lobo fans should not throw objects on the court)
Yes or No? | 10:28 a.m. Feb. 27, 2008
Will a Kewger fan please answer YES of NO, did Plaisted commit that foul at the end of the game? YES or NO?

You Kewger fans are never willing to admit to things like this. There is no shame in acknowledging that your team benefited from this no-call of an obvious foul.

Furthermore, your teams have gotten lucky several times in both football and basketball recently. Yes, you can all say that is what separated the good teams from the mediocre teams, being able to pull through at the end of games. There is probably some truth to that, but there sure are a lot of little Kewgers that are doing a lot of gloating. You got very lucky against both Utah and UCLA at the end of the football season. If the didnt intervene in those games youre team would have finished the season unranked. Likewise, your basketball team has a number of controversial wins this year. My point is the ball isnt going to continue bouncing your way forever. Id consider cutting back on all the gloating a little.
Utah Man. | 10:45 a.m. Feb. 27, 2008
I am a Ute fan and this pains me but... You are all bagging on the Cougars, one even asked about quality wins? Louiville comes to mind, also a toe to toe match with UNC. Not a bad team give them the credit they deserve even if you hate cougar fans and everything about BYU. That said I still think they will choke in the dance.
wii | 10:53 a.m. Feb. 27, 2008
No referee will call a foul with the ball going out of bounds and less than a second left in overtime with the teams seperated by 1 point. But it gives fans something to cry about.
New Mexico | 11:03 a.m. Feb. 27, 2008
The bad count on Cummard's fouls doesn't surprise me. It was in New Mexico a few years ago that BYU got a technical at the end of the game when the ref blew his whistle and a BYU player ran on the court and then the ref acted like he didn't blow his whistle. Talk about bad ref jobs. I can understand a missed call, but when you knowingly deny blowing your whistle or knowingly mark down fouls wrong, someone should be fired.
Poor utes | 11:10 a.m. Feb. 27, 2008
You have to feel for a team that is looking at finishing the season at 1 and 6. They have already lost to BYU and NM (at home) and will lose tonight to TCU. They will definitely lose to UNLV and at Wyoming (thanks Kyle) they should beat CSU at home, but that is only a 50-50 chance. Then, utah will lose its first game in the MWC to UNLV. Its No wonder the utes spend so much time watching anc commenting on BYU. BYU is the conference champion two years in a row and utah is that bottom of the pack hoping for the possibility to get into the NIT. (Good luck, but I think your season will be over after game one of the MWC tourney.) I wish you luck in the tourney because I would love for BYU you to beat you three times this year. Don't worry, you always have the balance beam.
To delusional Cougar | 11:14 a.m. Feb. 27, 2008

The Cougars are the best basketball team in the history of the Mountain West or WAC conferences. They will continue to dominate the league for years to come and should go independant. If we were in the PAC 10 this year, we would dominate the league and we would have deservedly earned a top 5 national ranking. The MTN television network should show all BYU sports all the time if it wanted to have the highest ratings.
Re Yes or No? | 11:12 a.m. Feb. 27, 2008
No, no call was called; therefore, no call was committed. Now, poor little red tail chicken, will you answer this? Are you only here worrying about BYU because you know that your yewtes are going to lose at least 6 of their last 7 games. Let me walk you through it. Shame on BYU, Utah and MWC fans | 11:14 a.m. Feb. 27, 2008
Why would BYU fans stop gloating? They're champions of the Mountain West Conference...the eighth best conference in the nation!

Here's to another first-round loss to a more athletic team. *Yet, do not fear fans in blue, at least you have that nationally ignored, disrespected, and (believe it or not) locally meaningless regular season MWC championship to look forward to again next year.

*This applies to all teams belonging to the Mountain West Conference.
new TV analysts | 11:18 a.m. Feb. 27, 2008
Anyone who has the MTN and watched the game last night has got to be absolutely disgusted with the play-by-play announcers! Those two were the most horribly biased towards UNM that it made me want to puke! The whole game all they did was praise UNM and how they should be in the Big Dance along with UNLV and BYU (forget the fact that SDSU is a way better team than the Lobos). They made the comment about Plaisted's non-called foul, "There are worse things happening on the floor tonight than there are in prisons." Absolutely uncalled for and totally unprofessional. And even though BYU won the game all the announcers could do is praise UNM and JR "I can't hit a jumpshot to save my life" Giddens. Did he have a great game? Yes. Did he disappear in OT? Yes. What about Plaisted? Did he have a great game? Yes. Did he disappear in OT? No. He stepped up and sunk in those free throws like a champ! Then the post game show on the MTN gives more props to UNM! Marrius Payton is still influenced by his days as a U of U broadcaster. Ridiculous and unprofessional!
MWC champs | 11:25 a.m. Feb. 27, 2008
Did Plaisted hit the Lobo guy whose name escapes me? Obviously, yes. Was it a foul? Absolutely not.

Remember this simple fact: When the refs don't call a foul, it doesn't exist. Plain and simple. The refs missed plenty of calls last night, as they do every night. They're human. It sucks, but that's the reality.

Believe it or not, that was not the only game-altering no-call last night. There are always going to be no-calls, and whining about it will only make your pain worse.

Heck of a win over a great team in front of 18,000 animals last night, Cougs.
js | 11:33 a.m. Feb. 27, 2008
Here is another point of view of the supposed foul at the end of the game by Plaisted. It seemed to me that the reason the "foul" might not have been called by the refs was because Plaisted's hands were up with his arms almost straight up, and the UNM player was sweeping through and was clotheslined by the fact that he was moving horizontally to Plaisted and the ball. Looking at the play in slo-mo as the refs were able to do, probably was the reason for the "no-call". Just a thought.
new TV analysts? | 11:29 a.m. Feb. 27, 2008

How about Blaine Fowler(ex-BYU football player)broadcasting basketball games and Todd Christensen(ex-BYU football player) broadcasting football games. Both of their sons are recent BYU football players. See any bias there? Didn't think so.
RE: YES or NO? | 11:30 a.m. Feb. 27, 2008
Yes. Plaisted committed a LOOS EBALL foul, not a SHOOTING foul. Both players were going after the rebound when it happened. All three officials reviewed the play and ruled it that way. Who are you to say you know better? Was it lucky for BYU? Sure. Yes, there have been several close wins for BYU recently, in football and basketball. This doesn't mean that BYU is JUST lucky though, or they did not EARN those wins. It just means BYU had some very TOUGH opponents in those games but were still able to pull out the win, which is what good teams do. To suggest they had help from officials is just whining. The refs did not help Ethan Manumaleuma (sp?) block a field-goal attempt. Neither did they help Max Hall and Austin Collie convert on 4th and 18. Neither did they help Trent Plaisted, who has struggled from the line all season, hit clutch free throws in overtime last night at the Pit. In all those games BYU EARNED the victories in very tough games.

You are right about one thing though: BYU fans should not gloat. As a true-blue Cougar fan I hate seeing that from fellow fans.
Tanner W. | 11:30 a.m. Feb. 27, 2008
I love how the Utah fans always love to throw in their 2 cents like it means anything at all! In a game that doesn't even involve them, cause their 4 1/2 games behind with the Cougs having 3 left to play, they still are complaining about the officials. Once again, the team that lost had plenty of opportunities to put the game away and didn't. Sound familiar Utah? Maybe thats why your still whining and upset! And a classic Utah fan says the Yewts are the hottest team in the conference! Two straight losses and a sweep by your rival will make you think Anything is possible. Fact is, Magic only happens at BYU!
Whoa Nellie | 11:30 a.m. Feb. 27, 2008
RE: Yes or No?

It's obvious that Plaisted did not commit "that foul" at the end of the overtime last night because no foul was called by the refs. Rarely are fouls called in the last couple of seconds at any level of basketball.

Most likely BYU teams/sports will experience a downturn in some future season. However, luck has had nothing to do with their success the past two years. The football and basketball teams have won because of superior coaches and coaching, determination, effort, and perhaps superior athletes. The Utah games and UCLA are proof of this; neither luck nor officiating was involved. Deal with it!

And to Ms. Conference Champs?? poster. If you actually believe what you wrote today then you should have a responsible adult drive you down to Provo and check you in to those accommodations the State provides on East Center Street for a few years.
who wins | 11:35 a.m. Feb. 27, 2008
At the end of the game, who wins? Whoever has more points. Last night, that was BYU. Get over it New Mexico and whoever else doesn't like it. We won - they lost!!
Yes or No? | 10:28 a.m. | 11:55 a.m. Feb. 27, 2008
Fouls are called by the official.

Contact -- Yes!!!

Foul -- No!!!

Easy there angryman.
Re Re Yes or No? | 11:56 a.m. Feb. 27, 2008
No, no call was called; therefore, no call was committed. What? What does it mean to call a call? What does it mean to commit a call? Were talking about fouls. The question is did Plaisted commit a FOUL. Not commit a call. And the answer is YES. Plaisted fouled Smith, period. A foul was committed and not called.

Youre assessment of the Utes is just wrong. They arent at the bottom of the pack. They are right in the middle. It pains me to say it, but it is what it is. And yes, BYU is at the top right now. But like I said before, they have gotten A LOT of very fortunate bounces along the way and that wont last forever. And if our team was soooooo bad, like you say, they wouldnt have beaten UNLV and the conference champion would be split. Maybe you should give us just a little credit.

You didnt take my advice; just continued gloating. But ask a Kewger fan and theyll tell you how much class they have. How much gloating were you doing when the Utes dominated the Kewgers for decades?
Lobo Jasp | 11:54 a.m. Feb. 27, 2008
Lobo fans are not just upset at the no-call at the end of the game. Plaisted did whatever he wanted in the OT period with abosolutely nothing called against him. While Ferris was whistled for #5 with no contact, and JR was whistled for #4 with a clean swat on Plaisted, Plaisted continued to knock down Lobo players. He clobbered Toppert in the lane right in front of the Ref (and me). Instead of blowing the whistle, the Ref patted Plaisted on the butt. Hey, that's okay. Lobo fans are over it. We'll be there in Las Vegas, out-numbering and out-classing all other MWC fans. The truth is, we lost the game because we were cold from 3-point range and BYU did a good job getting their hands in our faces. We didn't lose because of the Refs. We just don't like it when Refs lose control of the game and only blow the whistle against us. BYU is a good team. That's why they are #25. Answer this: If the officiating wasn't an issue, why so many people so upset, including the MWC announcers? (who almost never favor the Lobos)
To RE RE Yes or No | 11:58 a.m. Feb. 27, 2008
We never gloated. We were celebrating our 1984 National Championship over a 6-5 Michigan team.
MTN needs help | 12:06 p.m. Feb. 27, 2008
The MTN announcers were terrible. Between the announcers and the fans chanting swear words after their big man fouled out, I finally muted the TV to watch the last 5 minutes of the game. Watching the replays of the last shot, It was Smiths hand that Plaisted about took off and not his head, and it occurred after the ball was knocked away.
Reason:Tom Holmoe | 12:00 p.m. Feb. 27, 2008
BYU has an Athletic Director that has a different vision than any previous AD, and they are succesful now, and will continue for a long time.

Many (Crowton, Reed, Cleveland) saw the whole academic standards / Honor Code as an obsticle to a winning program that needed to be "worked around" and massaged.

Holmoe has the vision that those are pillars of a winning program and built on them.

That is the equivilant of the wise man who built his house upon the "Rock".

That is why Austin Collie's statement, while irking LDS Ute fans everywhere, is the program's philosophy, and when people "buy-in" to that kind of philosophy, success follows.

Is it going to be sucessful? -- Yes.

Is it going to be difficult to be a Utah fan -- It only follows that it will.

Much will be written about it in the future, but BYU's program will reach a prominance in all sports never imagined back in the glory days of the 1980's.

We're over it | 12:02 p.m. Feb. 27, 2008
Clearly, Lobos lost due to poor three point shooting. If we shoot an average game, we whip BYU by 20, despite the very poor officiating that occurred last night at the PIT. It was terrible. We're not just talking about the last play of the game. Plaisted should have fouled out early and often in the OT period. He was OOC and playing with deparation. That's okay. We may get another opportunity in Las Vegas. I'm sure more Lobo fans will be there than Ute and BYU fans put together. We like to drink, gamble, and watch basketaball. And yes, if the refs favor BYU again, we'll be all over them. We can take a loss. We want the calls to be fair. Lord knows they aren't fair in Provo or Salt Lake City. We'd settle for fair in the PIT.
Re Yes or No | 12:08 p.m. Feb. 27, 2008
These BYU fans responses are funny. What they are saying is if a foul is committed, but not called, the foul never happened. That is a pretty silly way of looking at it.

I agree with the original post. And yes, luck exists in sports. Sometimes it is in your favor, sometimes it isnt. Kewgers have been pretty fortunate in a lot of games recently (going back to the football season).
Ute fans | 12:09 p.m. Feb. 27, 2008
I can't believe the time Ute fans spend breaking down BYU games. I can't break down Utah games with so much detail because I don't watch Ute games or care about what happens in Ute games. I've never seen a group of fans so obsessed with their rival. As far as controversy goes, a missed judgment call is not controversy but disqualifying a player with four fouls is controversy. As far as luck goes, a missed field goal in the UCLA game would have been luck. A blocked field goal is not luck. 4th and 18 against Utah is not luck, it is bad defense and choke job. Ute fans need to stay on the message boards that are about their own team.
Weeping | 12:30 p.m. Feb. 27, 2008
Weeping whaling and nashing of teeth, cying pouting, swearing, baling it never ends for cougar haters there will always be an excuse why their team lost. I can also understand why many teams would not want to live in the present. It mostly has to do with their team totally blows!!!
Anonymous | 12:49 p.m. Feb. 27, 2008
Utah fans - keep your comments coming. I am a BYU fan who has family members (a few) who are Ute fans. They try sooooo hard to convince me that Ute fans are not the ridiculous, loud, obnoxious people that I believe them to be...... and then Ute fans open their mouths and prove me 100 percent correct. Only Utah fans are sitting around with nothing better to do, but comment on BYU games. You do have your own team to talk about (oh that's right, there's not much to say about that!!). I would comment about Utah games too, except that I'm busy having a life and don't have time to waste commenting on the games of teams I supposedly care nothing about! Get a life Utah fans (and a new team) if you can!!

Last nights (on the road no less) win by BYU over the Lobos just doesn't seem fair does it? However, I sure do appreciate your support for my good friend Bruce Springsteen this past year.....oops, sorry I meant past couple of years. No one deserves more "compassion" than you Utes......... Yes,Compassion...(a big word used a lot at Deseret News and in Utah these days).....Personally I hope you NEVER DO get tired of listening to Bruces' "Glory Days." Myself, I like "Dancing In The Dark"....sort of has that celebratory atmosphere to it....you know??? See you next year Uteys.
In the Pit | 1:06 p.m. Feb. 27, 2008
It's not just the players and floor that get things thrown at, BYU fans get tormented too. I was at a BYU game in the pit a few years ago (as a BYU fan) and you better believe I got the finger, sworn at, and a few objects hurled my way. Living in Albuquerque is tough. Albuquerquns have to vent their frustrations somehow. So we as BYU fans should just be grateful we're able to help them.

Too bad I couldn't see the game to comment on all the calls, Blast the .mtn.

BYU Fan | 1:10 p.m. Feb. 27, 2008
I listened to the last 40 seconds of regulation and the entire overtime of the BYU-UNM game last night (the end of regulation time on the UNM broadcast). Quite frankly I enjoyed hearing the opposing team broadcasters play by play much better than of the BYU broadcast crew. I guess I'm biased to have grown up with the Chick Hearns and others....even Paul James in this area (I've lived here since 1972). The BYU broadcaster (play by play) is over the top in his style in my opinion. The local media is also a bit pedestrian and glib in their descriptions of what happened in the game. I am also weary of the silly back and forth shots by the vocal fans (particularly the anti fans from Utah, saying anyone but BYU, etc. and making religion part of it....it's just such a waste of time to be subjected to it. BYU and Utah athletic/sports are about as competitive as they can be, given the resources available to them. As to the game last night, the out of control fans is one of the things that was unfortunate. The UNM game administration should be reprimanded and made responsible for what happened.
