The absence of the Desert Wind has been felt in the Southland for years. The monorail Disney proposal is very welcome. What is also needed is a heavy weight car-train like the east coast has that run daily for those who wish to avoid the 15 parking lot. Travelers want a speedy transport to the resources in and around Vegas (and beyond) but want their cars with them without having to drive there.
For the quick trip over the weekend, a high-speed rail from either Disney or the Ontario airport (or both) would handle thousands.
The challenge for either choice is the Cajon Pass and the grades the major railroads have been fighting since pioneer times.
The former passengers streamliners were heavily travel until it became faster to drive. Time to strike a balance of speed, car and train.
I'm curous what the Desert Wind schedule looked like. I believe if you want to ride Amtrak out of SLC you have to leave at some awful hour in the early morning, like 2 or 3 AM. No wonder they have low ridership.
If we can get private funding for a rail system between SoCal and Vegas, that sure beats spending tax money on it.
