Haley Barbour is the Governor of Mississippi, not Louisiana.

"The only issue that Huntsman could be called a conservative is the issue of one man and one woman is a marriage.
It would be so nice if would take the offer, and better if he loses his re-election. He is nothing but a wealthy figurehead.
Most of our legislatures are moderate republicans which are the same as being a Democrat.

Serious

I do not believe any of the aformentioned governors for the republican ticket would fit with McCain nearly as well as RUDY from good old New York would. In this case the old saying of Birds of Feather flock together fits real well on this ticket.

DennisM

The last time I looked Bobby Jindal was the governor of Louisiana and Haley Barbour was the governor of Mississippi. Now which one did they mean to list in this article??

Tom

The photo of McCain and Huntsman in their white shirts and red ties look pretty impressive. Gov. Huntsman could provide much needed leadership to our next Presidency, along with his international relationship experiences which could really help......and speaking of former governor's, this combination would provide a great jumping off place for former Governor Romney next time around, not to mention a few thousand votes for McCain from displaced Utahans as well as many other conservative Mormons around the Country. Not a bad idea? Now that Romney has set the stage for a Mormon in the White House, this combination could be a good choice for the Republicans. I'm not sure most Utahans would want to give up Gov. Huntsman; he is doing a great job for Utah right now. Who knows what could happen...he's got plenty of money to throw into the campaign! Let's wait and see. Good luck, from a fellow Politician as well as a Viet Nam Veteran.

Huntsman?

Help McCain politically? Are you kidding? He's Mormon and after watching what happened with Mitt Romney because of his Mormonism, McCain won't touch Huntsman with a 10 foot pole.

Josh

As for the former presidential candidates, McCain would doom his campaign if he chose Huckabee. And he seems to despise Romney. Ron Paul is a nutcase. Fred Thompson seems like an unlikely choice.

But it's all immaterial since he's going to lose anyway.

russ

Yah gotta choose Huck, John. He paid the price. He stood in there. He is nationally tested.

But I don't think you will. He doesn't pull enough votes and sometimes is goofy.

Ok, most of the time he is goofy, but still, he paid the price.

Haley Barber is the governor of Mississippi, not La.

Good Take Him

Conservative? Nobody here wants him. Unfortunately I can't imagine why he would pick Utah over Florida (Governor Crist). McCain will definitely need Florida to win. Hopefully Huntsman can at least go to a cabinet position. Now if we could only talk him into taking Lewis Billings, Provo City's "spend all our money" mayor.

Yeah, Right!

Governor Huntsman has about a big a chance of being named VP as Britney Spears.

However, if McCain is elected president, I wouldn't be surprised to see Huntsman get a cabinet position, or perhaps a position as director of the EPA or SEC.

Why is no one talking about Bill Clinton as Vice President. It is perfectly leagal and no one has more experience in the democratic contest than he does.

C VA

Bill cant be VP. To be VP you have to stand the constitutional test, able to be Pres. He cannot be president under terms of the constitution (already served the limit of 2 terms) so he cannot be VP.

Thanks Heavens!!

No chance of Bill...again!

Gov. Huntsman a conservative? what a complete lie. He is worthless and I will never vote for him again. I did, but i wouldn't vote for him to be a dog catcher. He is a disaster for this state and has no core principles make him qualified for any public responsiblity.

Uh, Are You Kidding?

Jon Huntsman a solid conservative? Mr. Bernick, you have been misinformed. Jon Huntsman is better described as a centrist, left leaning on many issues, right leaning on a few others. Moderate leaning on most issues. It's depressing that the D News is so misinformed on this fact. Your reporters need to dig deeper. There is so much that gets past what the D-News realizes. Come on, I expect better from you.

Here's an example. The Legislature passed by overwhelming veto-proof odds, a bill that gives the Legislature oversight on significant interstate agreements. Guess who dislikes that bill? The Democrats and the SLTribune. Why? Because they are smart enough and insightful enough to realize that Huntsman is their man on so many issues. D-News, awake from your slumber and ask yourself, "why are the Democrats so fond of Huntsman??" Awake from a slumber and get hustling, before Huntsman leaves you in the dust and makes a two-moderate presidential ticket with McCain.

Problem for Jon?

Republicans already made it clear with Mitt. They do not want a Mormon anywhere near the White House. The only question is why do Utahns stay loyal to a party that has rejected them in such a public and obvious way?

Ruby

I can't bear the thought that Gary Herbert might be (even a place-holder) governor. We saw this guy in his pj's on tv, he questioned the COLOR of the Notary's INK on the Voucher Referendum Application and he dutifully threatened (personally, at their homes!) the last couple of voucher holdouts. Huntsman may be all hat and no cattle (cliche of the month), but he has some polish. Please, remember how much YOUR fellow REPUBLICANS distrust Mormons--even rich ones. We are so full of ourselves. . .

Mom

To Problem for Jon. You may live to regret those words~

No Huntsman

I guarantee he will not pick Huntsman. He doesn't need Utah and a Mormon is just a liability with the core evangelicals he is trying to win back. At the same time, he may go with a moderate to try to shift some of those moderate voters leaning toward Obama, in which case he will also avoid Huntsman because anything Mormon or Utah does not equal moderate. My gut tells me Huck but I also think Crist or Rudy have a good chance as well. We should be glad he doesn't go with Huntsman. He has been great for Utah and will continue to get things done there. Go Huntsman.
