I forgot to mention all the costs and tragedy caused by illegal aliens who commit crimes in addition to their illegal presence. I understand that 21% of those in federal prisons are illegal aliens. How many of these are/were gang members. There's another of the many diversity benefits to our community--hispanic gangs and their crimes.

The answer to this problem is so simple. As citizens we cease to support any business that hires illegals. Don't cry about how hard it is to identify an illegal.

Second. Punish every business owner with a fine of $10,000 for each occurance of hiring an illegal and one year in prison for each.

Third. Citizens have the right to vote. If the Republicans and Democrats will not solve the problem then try the Utah Constitutional Party. Make your voice heard and your vote count.

It makes me sad to read such ignorate comments being placed on this blog, First off I do not approve of illigal imigration however do you think the imigration problem will end with the house bill that is being voted on? Who is going to do the jobs they are doing right now, who is willing to pay more for the labor for those jobs lets see if once your paying 8.00 for your hamburgers and 10 times the cost for your vegies at the supermarket if you still feel the same way. this is just another way for our folks on capital hill to look like they are doing something. Our country has so many issues right now this shouldn't be the most important issue to waste our time, if your competing with the imigrants for a job you could start by blaming our lousy school system this state has. Good luck Utah

is this for real | 9:33 p.m. Feb. 24, 2008
Is this Utah or Kentucky? with all the venom being put on this blog it can't be Utah. you would think from reading this blog that once we get rid of for everyone who isn't white Utah will be a blooming state full. The truth is there are issues with our imigration system but not every imigrate is a criminal I know some hard working people who have been able to live the american dream through hard work and honest labor that most people in this forget about and group into one big minority group. There is bad people in every race if every person in Utah was white there still would be a drug problem and there still would be crime lets not forget that.

These people aren't going to learn to obey the law and integrate as long as we pander to them.

We're afraid of them? Hardly. Obviously they don't understand us. We want them to obey the law. That seems simple enough.

And they want another rally? Waving Mexican flags and chanting "Gringo Go Home!" Why not march with your "Labor Dispute" banners. Good luck with that one.

This one-sided reporting by the Deseret News is pathetic. All it's doing is rallying our troups against you and strengthening our resolve.

My suggestion: Go ahead and rally. Call the governor.

But you'll never win the public until you earn our respect and that won't happen until you first respect our laws and our country. 'Til then, you will remain third class trespassers with no rights.
This is messed up | 9:47 p.m. Feb. 24, 2008
Rights come with responsibilities. I love the fact that those who have come into this country illegally are incensed by what is happening because they showed the responsibility and they now have rights. They paid a price for citizenship and hate to see others try and gain it by breaking the laws and then just demand it. It breaks my heart to read the posts by veterans who have laid their lives on the line and seen their friends and loved ones killed defending this great country only to have it doled out to those who have no rights to the services and privileges this country offers. The sad thing is that it will escalate if something is not done to deter illegal immigration into this country and into our state. I'm like most who really don't think much about the cost of illegals that I am paying. And yet I am paying it. If I had to walk down to the store and stand there and pay the cashier for groceries being taken by illegal immigrants I would be hopping mad. And if Governor Huntsman bows to this kind of pressure by illegals maybe he can subsidize them.
Do something! | 9:53 p.m. Feb. 24, 2008
They are trying to get the governor's ear against the bill, but I just e-mailed the governor to let him know that I support it.
Just a google search for Gov Huntsman and a link click. Don't just whine about it, do something!

It is truly lamentable that our neighbors from Mexico are bearing the brunt of our misdirected hatred. This law is only directed at one specific race / ethnic group, Mexicans, you cannot parse it any other way. Those behind this law are too stingy, too miopic, and too mean spirited. This law and others like it in the hopper, need to be trashed, not edited.

I expect the guv to veto this terrible bill. And I'll do more than vote for his reelection, I'll work for his team. I stand with the latinos on this issue, they are humans, they have human rights. We need to show more tolerance for our neighbors from Mexico, and we can certainly afford to help them.

You anti "illegal" immigrant posters cannot parse your hatred like you try, you're just haters, you are anti Mexican, you are old fashioned, and you are wrong.
ID Jazz | 10:13 p.m. Feb. 24, 2008
I think that every company or person that hires illegals should have to pay the price of the ticket to send them back to whatever Country the hale from plus a hefty fine. If they don't pay then go in and posses any property that they have and sell it to cover the cost. At some point and time you are going to have people scared enough to not hire illegals or let them go. With no one willing to hire them they are going to vacate to neighboring states.
The thing that will never change is that you can ship home as many illegals as you want but until we build a wall nothing will change.
RickG | 10:13 p.m. Feb. 24, 2008
So people who entered this country illegally think they should "rally" or demonstrate and demand to be treated as citizens, or maybe even better? They won't obey the immigration law, many have no respect for many laws. Many are arrested for crimes and deported but they are back in a few days. Action has to be taken. Take away the hiring of illegals. Take away free education, free medical care, welfare benefits, various other taxpayer funded benefits. Make it so most illegals will go home where they belong, to a country that does not welcome Americans as immigrants or offer us any benefits. If Huntsman goes soft on illegal immigrants, he loses my vote for good.
wayne | 10:16 p.m. Feb. 24, 2008
I love the paragraph saying:
" They also need to be careful to never help friends or family break Utah's laws."

So it's ok to break federal laws, just not a state one.

how hypocritical can you get
TO: " is this for real" | 10:17 p.m. Feb. 24, 2008
When will you get it???

Quit playing the race card-- it has nothing to do with race and everything to do with economics. I have my own children, thank you- I don't want to pay to educate, feed, and provide health care to yours.

It's a lie that getting rid of illegals will make our cucumbers cost $100 each. If the illegals were not here driving down the wages and sending the dollars they earn to Mexico, more Americans would do those jobs and in turn would recive an actual living wage. That would in turn add taxable income to the US economy- thus enlarging the economy- while at the same time eliminating the free education, health care, and welfare for illegals which is costing the legal American tax payer billions. It's a win- win. STOP PLAYING THE RACE CARD-- that shows that you are not able to debate the issue and have to resort to enciting.

>> I came because I had to. I needed a better life for my family," >Attendee Ricardo Hernandez said he sometimes feels like his dog has more rights than immigrants. >All Hispanics need to make sure their vehicles are properly licensed and insured, he said. They also need to be careful to never help friends or family break Utah's laws.<<

Umso Mr. Yapias, since coming here illegally IS breaking the law, then we should stop harboring, helping, hiding illegal aliens, right? Or is it just the immigration laws that are OK to break?

When will Yapias and his ilk recognize that those who feel entitled to break immigration law just might ALSO feel entitled to break other laws to. Those who have no respect for US laws tend tohmbreak them.
TO: dave 4197 | 10:26 p.m. Feb. 24, 2008
I'm going to break into your house tonight, I'm going to eat your food, watch your TV, take your money, sleep in your bed, and drive your car. And if you complain, I will call you a racist, tell you you're wrong, and are old-fashioned. I will demand that the government change the law to allow me to stay at your house an enjoy the use of all you have.

I have human rights you see.

Swede | 10:36 p.m. Feb. 24, 2008
Illegal Alien impact on wages - Prior to being overrun by illegal aliens, meatpackers used to make a minimum of $19 per hour. Now visit your local meetpacking plant and see who is doing the work and you will also note that the pay is now around $8 - $10 per hour..... Enough said

>>Attendee Victor Bonilla asked the audience to discourage graffiti and other acts that generate a negative stereotype of Hispanics. When the community is under scrutiny as it is now, they "must be more responsible in order to earn the compassion of others," he said.<<

Stunning. It's OK to sneak into a country illegally, falsify papers (recently 50% of those here illegally were shown to have STOLEN identities of US citizens), lie about your status, teach your kids to lie, etc. But for heaven's sake don't do any GRAFFITI, because it might make us look bad!

I think the decent, law-abiding majority of Hispanic citizens might want to anoint some new "leaders."
Mike | 11:06 p.m. Feb. 24, 2008
Wow!!! i never tough utah had so much racism going on, as a member of the church i have to say this is very sad.
TO: Mike | 11:26 p.m. Feb. 24, 2008
naive.

For those of use living in California or Arizona- we see the problems of illegal immigration on a larger scale than Utah- and it is destroying our American way of life as well as the health care systems, hospitals, and the economy. Eventually, the America that my grandparents (the greatest generation) fought for, and that I love, will not be around for my grandchildren- so that makes me sad and angry. The politicians are selling out our heritage for their pathetic politcal careers. When you finally see the fleecing of the American poeple regarding this issue- maybe you will see that light and get angry too.
A Real American | 12:08 a.m. Feb. 25, 2008
DONT BE RACIST!!! REMEMBER WHERE YOUR PARENTS COME FROM, THEY WERE TREATED THE SAME WAY YOU ARE DOING WITH THIS PEOPLE!!! Pleople with crimes back to your countries, but for all of that people that works hard for a better life, they deserve an opportunity, pay your taxes, pay a fee, learn english and still working hard. "WHITE" people as know as white trash spend more money from aou pockets sitting at home waiting for the so. sec. check because they don like to work. and we take money from the illegal too from their paycheck, are you going to wash the bathroom in mc donalds for 5 or 7 bucks an hr? NO!!! thats the truth, if you work in a warehouse, you are a looser bacuse you want to be and work like that...

I'm sad to see my own people thinking that they are better and superior, you look like natzis! This is a country made and will still brething from people coming from aroud the world as always, and we can grow together in a way that can respesct each other and serve each other for a common goal...have a better life and be happy!!!

Debate all you want - it won't do any good.

Yes, our elected officials sold us out for money and power. They let the illegals cross the border, steal from us, and what not. This is old news.

The problem is... we let them do this. We let our officials allow these illegals in. We didn't reign in our governors, senators, congressmen, judiciary with the use of impeachment and dismissal.

We, the people, own our sovereignty. This is not an illusion or a theory. We own our freedoms by nature and nature's God. Of course threats to our physical use of freedom will come; it's destined.

Yes, this illegal immigration problem can be ended - only when we're willing to end it. That road will be difficult and will try our souls, but will be worth it.

The Hispanic community can file appeals all they want. Sooner or later US and Utah sovereignty will be restored. That's just a law of life. A law no one can break.

Everywhere I look it says our economy is in trouble. With employment possibly hitting in the 7-8% range and inflation and interest rates going up America needs those jobs for the law abiding citizens.

I lived through the high inflation and low wages of the seventies. It's going to get really rough, buckle up. I remember people with advanced degrees working in grocery stores.

As I understand it, we need legal immigrants and temporary worker programs for the agricultural jobs.
There is no need for illegal workers. Especially not now. Plan for the worst Governor, and let the bill pass as law. It's a compromise on both sides. I fear next year it might not be so nice.
Ilegal Bagel | 6:51 a.m. Feb. 25, 2008
Morning Ya'all!!!! How is the immigrant bashing going today, you sure are mad and can write ILLEGAL many times. Now here is what you don't do, I think it is pretty easy to pick on a poor person who has come here to work, but do you attack the businesses that hire them, no ya don't, because they haved BIG lawyers. Any useful legislation against employers goes bye bye. Check the no match letters that have been held up at the Supreme Court, oh, and for those of you who speak to kindly to the sanctions law against Arizona businesses, take a good look at the not so fine print. They have to prove that the employers KNOWINGLY hired illegal workers. Now there is a loophole if I ever heard it. Now, put down your forks, don't any of you buy food or go to a restaurant where there are illegal workers, and you write yourself a letter to Tyson, sure you will.
Lynn Young | 8:42 a.m. Feb. 25, 2008
All I ask of our elected representatives (Governor included) is that they represent the desires of the legal citizens of Utah. I expect our elected officials to provide protections for the legal residents of this state. I expect them to abide by, and strengthen if necessary, the laws of the land.

I don't expect illegal activities to be endorsed or ignored.

I also don't expect those who are here illegally to be abused or mistreated, but I do expect them to comply with the same laws we are all expected to live by.

Compassion is something extended on a personal level. Law enforcement is something I expect from government.

Legislators: protect our liberties and rights. Governor: don't veto any of these protections.
Fred | 8:38 a.m. Feb. 25, 2008
Legal=Law Abiding. Illegal=Law Breakers.

And you want the governor to take the side of the law breakers? If he does, you need a new governor

To all of you playing the race card. There are only three races. Please use ethnic group.

So few forget just how many people are poor in this State that are legal residents. Old motels converted into weekly pay apartments etc.

Housing assistance, free medical and dental, free school lunches, no taxes, hey, where can I sign up for illegal immigrant freebies? Sure i'm not an illegal, but if breaking the law doesn't mean anything to our governing officials, what's another little white lie to them?

KSL News said that if this bill passed, "Illegals would move away from Utah in droves" thus hurting the local economy.

Um, we are strong, we can take that kind of hurt. Especially when the gangs, domestic violence, drugs and crime they brought with them moves out with them.
Mr. Rogers | 4:55 p.m. Feb. 25, 2008
I wonder why the Hispanics are wanting to veto the immigration bill. Is it because they went across the border and don't want to be sent back to Mexico. Yep thats the reason
Moral structure needed | 8:24 p.m. Feb. 25, 2008
Hey, Guys everyone is praying that things go well. We want to see big changes in Utah once these illegals are sent packing. We will have peace and perhaps there will be less crime on our streets. It will be a blessing. This crime stuff on TV really has people coming together. We are truly tired of it. Utah hasn't always been this way. We ALL want the old Utah back as it once was and with good morals.
Baffled Reader | 4:08 a.m. Feb. 26, 2008
I still see as preposterous how people believe make a hispanic issue, or how they say that getting rid of illegal immigrants at State level will solve the problem. You must understand that our economies are deeply dependent on the existence and use of legal and illegal immigrants.

Furthermore, I am amazed at how quickly people turned their heads away from the fact that they are humans, and that most of our actions in the world, primarily our economical imperialism, guides people deep into poverty into risking their lives for an opportunitty for better living.

Where are our true values as americans? I don't endorse illegal immigration, but I must say that the solution from come federally to stop first immigration, and then humanely penalize people who have violate the law. Illegal immigrants won't leave, they just will become poor and stressed under these conditions, and the crime you were talking about, yes, it will be coming up.

Wake up Utah!

Mexican citizens that broke our laws and come here illegally have NO say in our laws!

Go home, get in line, come here legally!
Dane | 11:34 a.m. Feb. 26, 2008
Anyone here legally is entitled to our benefits just as much as the next person. If you are illegal you are breaking the law, end of story. If I move to another state and have to pay out of state tuition for a year before they let me pay in-state tuition, why should illegals get the in-state rate here? Get them out. BUT, make it easier for people to come in legally, pay taxes, and contribute like every other legal citizen.
CO | 12:57 p.m. Feb. 26, 2008
Amazing that they allow foreign groups to have any say as to how these illegal/criminals should be treated. Sue the gruops that are supporting them.

Don't let them change the rules of language...They are not "undocumented" they are Illegal Tresspasers here stealing services, causing crime, ruining the wages, spreading known and unknown diseases, costing billions of $$$$.

Don't let them ruin our law. They don't obey it and they are not held accountable.

Make the people who support them pay the price in fines and imprisonment and by voting them out. That includes businesses, employers, corporations and the Government and the elected officials. Use our tort system against all of them and Sue the pants off of the people allowing this crime to continue.

We need a huge class action lawsuit for money lost while the corporations and government "Aids and Abets" Criminals.

The good thing is every time they pull this "We want this now" crap the legal Americans and legal immigrants get angry and draw closer to developing a powerful grassroots coalition that will take on this issue and make the criminals and entities that support them accountable.

I appreciate the sensible anti-illegal immigration comments on here. Not-alone
SAD | 1:14 p.m. Feb. 26, 2008
What is the Answer? Both sides are dealing with an issue that has been allowed to get out of control.

I want to have compassion but I can't tolerate the abuse of law. I feel very frustrated when I see somebody not playing by the rules want more and want something unfair to others who are obeying the law.

I feel sorry for the children who have been dragged here or are born here or stayed here illegally and now because of their parent's illegal actions may have some sad circumstances placed on them.

But what is being taught to these children? Here is a free ride? It is OK to break laws? Someone else will pay for you and your food? the Illegals are the victims?

So much of this flies in the face of reason and seems so absurd to allow people to break the law on a legislative level.

Whose fault is the consequences of crime and dishonesty? Unfortunately there are going to be serious consequences on one side of this issue or the other. Personally I think those that have committed the crime should pay and be held accountable until there is a legal solution.
Waste | 3:53 p.m. Feb. 26, 2008
There is a tremendous amount of misinformation being reiterated in these comments. I moved to Utah 4 years ago, and have never encountered the amount of discrimination that is rampant in this state.
I truly hope this is not true for the rest of the United States.
HEY WASTE | 4:00 p.m. Feb. 26, 2008
Wanting people to not break federal laws isn't DISCRIMINATION
No More Crime!--Re-WASTE | 4:28 p.m. Feb. 26, 2008
Yeah!
It's not discrimination trying to keep crime, drugs, murder and everything else rotten out of our fine Utah towns. We Utahns built this state as a place for peace with our families. So why should we put up with people coming here and disrupting the goodness and beauty we gave it? Crime doesn't hold a place with Utah culture.

I don't fear immigrants breaking into my house, etc, like you write. I do have a house in a hispanic neighborhood in Salt Lake City. And I'm a gringo. We're neighbors. And peaceful. And in strong disagreement with TO. TO, if you were stupid you would be sad, but I don't think you have that excuse, you're just wrong, way wrong. My vote counts too, and I'll vote for the guv when he vetoes this anti education for immigrants bill, if it ever gets to his desk. And I'll vote against this guv if he signs this anti education bill.
To Hey and No More Crime! | 12:49 p.m. Feb. 27, 2008
Right, because before immigrants there was zero crime, drugs, murder, and everything else rotten. Riight. Wasn't Utah culture tollerant of discrimination of women?

All the negative comments towards the "criminals" are great examples of people looking for an excuse to hate others.

And as for breaking federal laws is concerned, realize that this situation was created by the federal government. The current immigration "crisis" is a direct result of that, and peoples sudden attention is a result of media's influence.
yes they are criminals | 1:37 p.m. Feb. 27, 2008
The "situation" was created by scoffing the federal laws, plain and simple, end of story.
gary richfield | 2:23 p.m. Feb. 27, 2008
this isn't a race issue, nor broken immigration policy . It simply breaking law whether from country A or B doesn't matter. If They are illegally here. There is legal way to come.

Mmy wife here legally from a foreign country . It has taken almost 5 years for Citizenship. We do not have any of her brothers, sisters ,parents, uncles or aunts here, that takes a whole nother 10-15 years after she is a citizen to maybe have some here. And then only if we support them to be not on welfare rolls. All would commit to become American in culture, speak English and keep the law. They would have waited their turn.

Those that justify illegals and want to reward them, fail to understand the problem caused by them,

They fail to understand the orderly method by which people come to USA. They are cleared to be non criminal, they can not bring everyone with them, They wait their turn, they must be financially sponsored so as to not burden the taxpapers of this country, They can not be on welfare while here. No diseases, prostitutes, criminal, terrorist .No work without approval. Must learn English, American way. Immigration system works!!!! fair
Anonymous | 5:38 p.m. Feb. 27, 2008
Legal Americans, like me, resent illegal aliens breaking the law, then calling us (legal Americans) racist for not allowing the law to be changed. TOO BAD. Illegals don't make the laws and laws are made to be enforced -- that's America.

Illegals attempt to justify their breaking the law to come here by stating that they are just here to work- The guy who robs a bank just wants money to buy food for his kids; or the drug dealer that sells drugs because he needs the money. Bill Clinton stated he lied under oath (crime) to save him from embarrassment. No matter what the purpose, their actions are still crimes and there is no justification for breaking the law even if it is "just coming to the U.S. to work." Illegals are still criminals- the turth hurts.
There was peace | 6:59 p.m. Feb. 27, 2008
To you who support illegals

No need to throw a tizzy fit! Illegals are criminals! If these illegal people knowingly come to the United States of America, and do it illegally, then they are criminals. Please quit justifying yourself along with the illegal immigrate. Crime is crime. The Mormon pioneers do not count for the laws of today. They have changed a bit with modern time.
The Americans purchased this land from Mexico. So however you want to view it these people are here truly legally. The pioneers built this beautiful state up with their own bare hands. The pioneers worked together and did not steal from others for what they had. Many of pioneers made friends with the Indians. There were many peaceful trades with the Indians back in those days. I personally had an ancestor who always had the Indians over for dinner and the Indians loved my gggg grandfather. There are no known hostilities in our family diaries with the Indians.
Dave | 9:07 p.m. Feb. 27, 2008
The only thing the illegals should be pushing for is revisions to the visa system since as illegals they shouldn't expect any special treatment.

I suggest anyone who has problems with those wanting the laws enforced go and try and enter a Central or South American and see how you are treated. The treatment of those who come here illegally is first class compared to any other nation of the world. Immigration may be a federal issue however the states should be responsible enough not to create conditions that encourage the problem.

This nation was founded to further the rule of law and respect for the rights of it's citizens. If you want chaos or expect special treatment you were born in or came to the wrong nation.
Let's Not Forget | 7:41 p.m. Feb. 28, 2008
I support an immigration reform!!! But LET'S NOT FORGET that it has been our elected official and our fault that the immigration laws are broken.

For example: If here illegaly, we don't recognize their ability to work. But we recognize their ability to pay taxes. That's why the IRS has given what is called an I-TIN number so that illegal aliens can do their taxes and pay their share of taxes.

Ironically the IRS recives a tax file with a fake SSN on the W-2 but on the 1040 shows an I-TIN number. They can clearly see that that person is here illegaly or that it's simply using fake info to work.

But the IRS just turns their head around and does their taxes. A refund if they over paid taxes or makes them pay taxes if they owe.

This has been like that for so long, since before this stronger wave of anti-illegal-immigration feeling began.

GOVERMENT/US WOULD CREATE PATHS SO THAT ILLEGAL-IMMIGRANTS COULD CONTINUE TO DO ALMOST EVERYTHING AS IF THEY WERE HERE LEGALLY.

Illegal just took the bowl of food we left on the table for them and that we expected them to take. BOTH OUR FAULT.
