It was at 63% a few weeks ago, and I am not hearing any movement either way. Now we all know Dan Jones would never ask leading questions, but many have fallen into the immigration bill trap set by the media members of the Salt Lake Chamber of commerce.

It's not an immigration bill, it's to stop the illegal aliens entering this country. And I take offense to those clouding the issue.

What is there to study? Do we study all criminals before we prosecute them for breaking laws? No. Only the illegal aliens need to be studied but its not what they really mean. What this study wants to do is delay any actions against illegals and on businesses employing them. We have had this issue under study for over 20 years now so how much longer does it take? These criminal illegals, all of them and their families, must be confronted by law enforcement and enforce all laws. America cannot turn a blind eye and hope the problem goes away and that the american people will accept the criminal actions against their live and lively hood forever. The american people are the victims of illegal aliens and our legislators have been acting long enough to aid and abet the actions of employers and the use of illegal aliens in the work force. The people of Utah are fed up with no action policies. If the governor wants to do a study, look at the benefits and cost reductions to government and social programs and education. Illegal Mexicans do not want citizenship, only to freeload, rob, and steal from Americans
liberal larry | 7:00 a.m. Feb. 23, 2008
The immigration issue is a tough one for conservatives. It pits their two defining traits against each other, fear and greed. The issue of immigration is primarily economic. "Illegals" want to feed their families, and American businesses want cheap, compliant labor. All the deportations, and fences, in the world won't solve the problem as long as there are jobs in this country for "illegals",

Mano dura contra los ilegales! Crack down hard now and then extend compassion afterwards as needed. No more status quo. No more politicians doing nothing!
Really | 9:35 a.m. Feb. 23, 2008
Just what part of ILLEGAL is it that our legislators don't understand? If this issue does not get some drastic teeth in it, we out here have an option come election time. You better make sure what ever you are about to study gets done in this session or alot of you will be attending gatherings in the future at a different location than the state capital building in a couple years. Watch this one VOTERS.
Spanky | 9:38 a.m. Feb. 23, 2008
I don't know who Dan Jones polled, but I know from personal experience that the vast majority of citizens in this state are against illegal immigration and want the problem solved now, not in 6 months, not in 6 years. Here's the deal. Business owners who have been using cheap illegal labor for years, and who contribute to politicians campaign chests, are putting pressure on these politicians to go against the will of the American people. They think if they stall long enough, we'll just get tired and go away. Not this time.
study it?!? | 9:51 a.m. Feb. 23, 2008
A study? Throw millions of dollars at a study? This is what makes people distrust and despise government (and their partners in crime in the local media) MAybe we can put all the legislators on a plane to western Europe and they can see firsthand how well multiculturalism and unrestricted immigration works out.
jr | 9:48 a.m. Feb. 23, 2008
Since I never seem to be where the polls are - I have one question - Why did I pay the price to be a legal immigrant when the doors are now wide open for the new slaves of America. The reason the politicians and businesses don't want to do anything is because they are making money of the back of the ILLEGAL ALIANS please note they are NOT IMMIGRANTS, they have not immigrated here they have stolen across the border, they have stolen legal American citizens ID etc. They even fly their countrys flag as to say "in your face" citizens

Tax papers cover the burden | 10:25 a.m. Feb. 23, 2008
Send the illegals home so we could put the money spent on illegals for education and healthcare to the poor LEGAL citizens in our own country. We really need to start putting money into the inner city schools. Has anyone been to Atlanta, Houston, or Memphis lately. Their inner cities need help bad. Tax payers have to pay the burden for the business' who reap all the rewards. Our country is in a recession, its time to take care of our own. Illegals broke the law coming here and many of them steal social security numbers also. I dont have sympathy for illegals.
Will Pearson | 10:31 a.m. Feb. 23, 2008
As an American westerner I have nothing against Latin-American immigrants. They have always been creative and colorful parts of my life. Only fools would reject such charming and energetic persons. We self-proclaimed Christians are the ones who should be punished for refusing our very God, who commanded us to "Love thy neighbor as thyself."
Kevin in Texas | 10:39 a.m. Feb. 23, 2008
All the problems with illegal migrants stem from their leagal status. Make them leagal and all of these problems resolve themselves. Provide a way for them to become leagal, through paying a fine or taxes and stop new immigrants by slapping a major fine on the employers who hire illeagals and the problem will be solved.
John | 10:35 a.m. Feb. 23, 2008
and in response to liberal larry's statement:

"All the deportations, and fences, in the
world won't solve the problem as long as
there are jobs in this country
for "illegals",

Liberal Larry would have us just throw in the towel and do nothing. He also provides no support for this claim. Notice that people like this never propose an alternative solution, they just criticize. No, SB81 wont solve ALL problems concerning illegal immigration, but at least its a start.
Anonymous | 10:39 a.m. Feb. 23, 2008
I agree with the study. This is the way to go. Utahns are finally waking up to what is moral and the right thing to do. Just because the extremist are loud doesn't mean the rest of Utah feels the same way. The extremist remind me of Germany before World War II, blame the Jews for everything.
Althoug illegal immigrants are braking the law, the law can be changed. How many of you have broken the speed limit law? Most I'm sure. That doesn't make you a criminal.
I don't think illegal immigrants are using public benefits. Those people are scared of being reported and deported. Why would they go to a place where they could be deported? It doesn't make sense.
Or are they refering to the children illegal immigrants are having here who are Americans? If this is the case, those children have the right. Maybe this is racism pure and simple.
Stewart | 10:53 a.m. Feb. 23, 2008
So Utahns are divided on the "Migrant" issue?(euphemism for illegal alien). I think this depends on who takes the poll. KSL and The Deseret Morning News have the same corporate bosses, and they have a definite agenda of their own. This looks like a case of using a poll created to push an agenda. I don't trust it. I doubt it feels right to many of you either.

The legislators know that the people want something done now! Just look at the bills that have passed through the House where they are more in touch with the people than the Senate. The voters will see that pushing any of these bills into SB97 (Jenkins) by the Senate will be the same as voting against them. The people want action now, and the Senators know it, but some of them think the voters are fools.

Utah is a sanctuary state, and that needs to change. By enabling illegal immigration in Utah we become part of the national problem. We are as much a part of the problem as the federal government.
Wilkey | 11:33 a.m. Feb. 23, 2008
One wonders where those numbers would stand if so many people weren't being mislead by their religious leaders. It stood at 63% - before the Mormon Church came out and called for "compassion," mostly towards wealthy Mormons like the Marriotts, Ivorys, Fultons, Peerys, and Holdings, all of whom rely on cheap immigrant labor and rapid population growth to keep their bank accounts fat.

One also wonders where that vote would stand if the media were more honest. Just a week ago this paper reported that Lake Powell could be empty by 2021 thanks to "growing demand." If the DMN had been honest they would've acknowledged that the source of that growing demand was rapid immigration, which is responsible for 82% of this nation's population growth.

It's also why we're not getting a tax cut this year - immigration eventually creates more government costs than it pays for (roads, schools, water, etc.)
Jake | 11:38 a.m. Feb. 23, 2008
To Anon. get real, there is nothing to study. They are in this country illegally. Solution?? Simple,DEPORT THEM !! And set up ARMED military at movable locations at the boarders. Shoot. After while,no more illegals crossing the boarders.
Paul | 11:39 a.m. Feb. 23, 2008
I agree with Spanky. I do not know anyone who does not want something done about illegal immigration. They seem compassionate about legal immigration, but their is very strong opposition to illegal immigrants. Even liberals I know want something done about this issue and done now. I really wonder who they are polling?
Pat Dix | 11:42 a.m. Feb. 23, 2008
My ancestors immigated to this country legally, and struggled to survive without social support. They became good citizens fought and some died for this country. I resent handouts given to law breakers. We who are citizens obey the law, why should someone who has broken it get special priviledge. Kick them out and level huge fines on any one employing them
Bob | 11:50 a.m. Feb. 23, 2008
What a farce! The illegals need to be dealt with. A good example this week of an illegal alien from Mexico driving a school bus in Minnesota who ran a stop sign and killed four of the students she was driving. She didn't even have a driver's license!!!
I hope the families of the dead students sue the state for every dime in their treasury. The people who a delaying dealing with these people had better try to wash the blood from their hands because they are as guilty as the offender.
Please help | 12:07 p.m. Feb. 23, 2008
Turn off the illegal immigration magnet! It is destroying our healthcare system, our public education system, our welfare system - we could go on and on. No need to study it - the problems are clear.
Paul | 12:17 p.m. Feb. 23, 2008
The simple answer is that Utahns don't have to wait for the Legislature to do what is right. We can always organize a citizen's initiative or proposition to put the teeth back in SB81. It is time for private employers to be held liable for hiring illegals. If there are no jobs, the illegals won't stay.
Steve | 12:50 p.m. Feb. 23, 2008
I see that most of these comments are just as "reactionary" as the legislative thought that absorbs our legislature. Illegals are well, illegal and therefore breaking the law and should be punished for that. Have any of you taken the time to ask why illegals are well, illegal? The immigration law itself which limits the legality is a broken system of hodge-podge arbitrariness and has historically been based on political winds rather than any rational thoughts.

Immigrants are illegal because our immigration system offers no way for them to enter the US to become legal. The quotas are impossible to work with and the immigration system itself cannot process applicants fast enough to allow legality.

Please, please, please read this short tongue-in-cheek history of our immigration laws and perhaps your viewpoint might change, just a little. (Written by an immigration attorney.
http://www.ilw.com/articles/2007,0829-murray.shtm

I'm not advocating all out amnesty but I'd be handing out some sort of registration cards left and right, which may still leave them "illegal but registered". The sooner we get everyone registered, the better handle we will have to go forward with whatever process needs to take place.
Study what??? | 12:57 p.m. Feb. 23, 2008
This proposed "study" is just a stall and a cover for politicians to avoid cracking down on illegal immigration in Utah. Both the "study" and the ceaseless braying about "compassion" are code words saying, in effect, do not upset the status-quo in Utah per the Chamber of Commerce, some LDS Church leaders, and immigration advocacy groups.

In fact, Utah gives extra privledges to illegal immigrants such as driver's licenses and in-state tuition that even the most left-wing states in the country do not. Was there a "study" before these extreme laws were enacted .... of course not.

I can surely predict the stacked, pro-illegal immigration orientation the "study" panel will have.

It is time for representative government and associated legislation to be returned to Utah!!! This should not be a state run by special interests who have been blatent and shameless in attempting to stop some very reasonable legislation from being passed.
St. George | 1:01 p.m. Feb. 23, 2008
The article does not correctly portray the results of the poll -- 47% say do something to discourage ILLEGAL immigration. 46% say study the problem (i.e. do nothing). The Governor, the business community, the LDS and other churches and a growing number of legislators say show compassion (i.e. do nothing. Utah is a sanctuary state and it looks like it is going to stay that way.
Jake | 1:15 p.m. Feb. 23, 2008
I'm sorry, but why have I stopped trusting the Deseret News on articles about illegal immigration? Every single one of them has been for maintaining the status quo, letting illegals get away with their criminal actions. I'm not talking about editorials either, although most of their "news" stories about it may as well be anti-enforcement editorials. Sorry News, anything you have to say about this topic is suspect.
Amateur pollster | 1:33 p.m. Feb. 23, 2008
According to my own unscientific study, 77% of the posters on this article want something done about illegal immigration NOW. I include myself in this column. Our borders need to be secured, our guests need to be documented, and our laws need to be respected.
Spanky | 1:34 p.m. Feb. 23, 2008
Email your representatives letting them know that if they don't do something about illegal immigration, that you will vote them out of office.
sbc | 1:43 p.m. Feb. 23, 2008
"Immigrants are illegal because our immigration system offers no way for them to enter the US to become legal."

1-3 million annually, however with all the illegals in the country the quota's have been reduced. Once they return the number of legal immigration will go back up. If amnesty is granted our quotas will be cut to almost none for several years until we absorb the excess. This country will never be able to accept as many from all parts of the world, that want to come here. That does not give select groups of people the right to come here illegally.

When you say, "No" to a child...the child doesn't listen...then on the next round..you ask,..."what is there about the word "NO" that you don't understand. So, I ask, What is there about the word, "Illegal" that the liberal representatives fail to understand?
Homer | 1:48 p.m. Feb. 23, 2008
There is no need for futher delay or study. Utah is on the edge of becoming an aiding and abetting state. We must turn off the free benefits to ILLEGALS. Notice that the word ILLEGAL only refers to those who are BREAKING the law. If the legislature, churches and business owners cannot distinguish between ILLEGAL and legal we are doomed. ACT now or your children will have no future.
Its Our Money | 1:56 p.m. Feb. 23, 2008
I have an idea, if the State of Utah continues to provide services to illegals, services that we taxpayers pay for, then we should all file a lawsuit against the State. Sen. Stephenson should have already led on this issue.
Watch out | 2:12 p.m. Feb. 23, 2008
The American people have a history of taking care of a problem in their own way.

Do you know why the illegal immigrants haven't had another big organized march in the street? Because it aggravated the "Beehive" too much and the legal Americans who are paying for the illegals got upset. Back underground they ran and are now slowly "boiling the frog".

But at some point something horrible is going to happen and be so horrible that the media won't be able to sweep it under the rug like they always do...then beware of the legal Americans because they will not tolerate this when it reaches a critical mass.

At some point there will be a huge problem that will be capable of destroying America. At that point there will be revolution in some form and there will be no kindness because the legal American people will demand immediate and swift correction of the problem that political correctness and oppression of the Legal Americans has caused.

Watch out Legislature...Don't make a decision based upon so called political correctness and unfairness to the American people. Don't let some industry people rule your decision because they will lose cheap illegal labor. Revolution
Warning | 2:28 p.m. Feb. 23, 2008
Beware of the growing anger of the LEGAL AMERICAN PEOPLE. We are tired of paying for the illegal actions of criminals who have come here illegally and steal services and lower the wages and quality of work. The founding fathers warned against this. Our sovereinity is in jeopardy. America is being weakened because of the money hungry corporations and politicians who allow lobbying to destroy the desire of the people. At some point WE THE PEOPLE will not stand for it anymore.

Take back our country that was built by true Americans who love this Country and put the country first. Americans of all races and religions.

Illegal activity in any form will destroy the foundation it is sitiing upon regardless of who built it.

Study the immigration laws under which your ancestors came to this country, then examine how stringent they are now. Think of how likely your ancestors would have been allowed into this country under current immigration laws before you decry the actions of others. Be wary about casting stones at others if you violate the laws.

What arrogance! You study the immigration laws. My father came to America legally during WWII. Then fought for this country and killed for this country. My son-in-law came to this country (legally) with all the costs and documents associated. I served in the US Army and pledged to defend and protect it from invaiders and agression. You, sir, need to study immigration laws, especially the part that addresses ILLEGAL entry into the country,
Anonymous | 4:31 p.m. Feb. 23, 2008
"Study the immigration laws under which your ancestors came to this country, then examine how stringent they are now"

Late 1800's, from Ireland during the potato famine. 12 applied, 7 made the trip 9 years later. The laws now are stringent because of all the illegal people already in the country. The illegals are taking the place of people from Asia, India, Europe and other countries that have just as much of a right to come here. That is selfish. You should be teaching patience instead of justify lawbreaking.
C. Jones | 4:53 p.m. Feb. 23, 2008
Here we go again with the Deseret News and their pro-amnesty agenda. They didn't get the results they wanted on the first poll so they led the "compassion" charge and are now patting themselves on the back that we have all now "come around" to their ridiculous idea of wanting illegals on a path to citizenship. What a crock! The logic that we should purue a stacked study group to determine whether or not we should enforce our own immigration laws is so stupid it defies description. Why don't we study the impact of enforcing all of our laws to see what impact it would have on various special interests. Insanity doesn't run at the Deseret News, it Gallops!

A Concerned Veteran | 6:11 p.m. Feb. 23, 2008
I am a native born Utahan and a Veteran of the Armed Forces. And I am appalled at the Immigration Laws that have been proposed and are being discussed on Capital Hill. I wish to point out two things:
First, having fought for American Freedom and for the Freedom of other nations, I am sickened and dismayed that anyone who would call themselves Freedom-lovers would be willing to oppress and intentionally vanquish an already exploited people. That is not what I put my life on the line for and it worries me that anyone could so completely misunderstand what America Stands for and what it means to be an American.
Second, as a student of the law, it is incredible that anyone can legitimately reason that forcing children from lower income homes to pay higher prices for education is going to add to Utahs coffers, or save Utah taxpayers money. It should be clear that it will perpetuate poverty and increase crime in Utah. Likewise, taking away peoples drivers licenses will not stop them from driving, it will only stop them from obtaining insurance. Is anyone out there ready to get in a wreck with an uninsured motorist?

To those of you so "fed up" with illegal immigrants I ask you to take a step back & consider all of the things that illegal immigrants might have done to make your lives better. Consider that house you bought a few years back, who did all the frame work, poured the foundation, put up the sheet rock, installed the flooring? Don't go accusing businesses of being the only beneficiaries of cheap labor if you benefit as well. I mean when was the last time you made a purchase at wal-mart (I bet you were against them building a store in your town huh)? It's funny how your opinion can change when your life is made easier by the very thing you oppose. Bob at 11:50 this morning was outraged that an "illegal" bus driver got in an accident that killed several people. Guess what Bob, I see paramedics all the time at accident scenes that I go past & this will come as a shock but...most of the time it's white people involved. Of course they're probably just from Europe. Let's find a way to help people become legal residents so they can escape their own impoverished lands.

I am a 'Legal American" and I am in the process of suing a company (very large) for refusing to hire me because I don't speak spanish. Why the heck do I need to speak spanish - I was born here their customers were not in most cases.

My grandparents came here from England and Germany. They went to Ellis Island in New York, where they were examined and had to produce documents. If they did not meet the LEGAL IMMIGRATION requirements it would have been a long boat ride back across the Atlantic. That is the way it should always be. Plus, we don't have to have immigrants if we don't want them. At some point we need to close the door, and maybe open it up when we deem to.

My neighbors are legal, and they work construction. I have a couple other neighbors that work at walmart also.

The idea that only illegal workers do these jobs is naive. They compete with the middle class and poor of this country.
We are hired based on skills | 8:54 p.m. Feb. 23, 2008
Companies have a right to refuse to employ someone if they don't speak Spanish, German, French, English, Russian or ASL. The Courts have already ruled that a company has the right to determine what, if any, languages its employees must speak. It's no more illegal or discriminatory to choose to hire someone who speaks Spanish than it's illegal to not hire someone who doesn't speak English.

Furthermore, why should someone who doesn't speak another language be given more consideration than someone who is as qualified as them when the other candidate speaks another language that benefits the employer. People spend a lot of money and resources improving their marketability and yet self-centered people feel they are entitled to a job that someone else is more qualified for.

You ask "why the heck do I need to speak Spanish." I will answer the question for you. Because the employer wants someone who knows another language and those who do shouldn't be discriminated against when our skills more closely match the companies than yours skills. It's wrong to be denied employment when someone spent a lot of time and money learning another language because the company is afraid to be sued.

Only problems on the horizon with this one. Americans feel betrayed by their government and are not willing to compromise.. Illegal aliens are willing to break U.S. laws and set themselves up to become the next slave labor class in America. The citizens need to override shortsighted legislators and save the country while their is still something left to save.

What if the bi-lingual employee is an illegal alien and not suppost to be in the country let alone work here? Seems like speaking two launguages is not the issue, legal residence in the USA is more relevant.

It is time to have our laws enforced. Our people are very angry about what has happened and encouraged by poloticians and churches. I agree with the person above who talked of revelotion.
