This wake up call is no surprise to Utah government. In the past schools and government building were built with an earthquake in mind and to withstand with known technology to be somewhat stable. But the people of Utah better understand that no school or public building is built to withstand or endure even a mild earthquake. That little event was and is considered too costly to implement before construction in order to have any safe shelters in times of disasters. The schools are built with a life cycle of 20 years and after that they are condemed as schools and sold for bussines use. For Utahn's the safest shelters in a disaster is their own basements and their own food supplies. Utah disaster perparidness is communications only between public services, which is important. But other than that we are on our own as individuals and as a community with no place to hide. Not even homes have been built with earthquake stability in mind. And considerations for home location and earthquke disaster areas has been developed with families and lives ignored by city and government officials. If anyone survives an earthquake in Utah it will be without aid.
